I just bought the Thermaltake Frio CPU cooler to go towards finishing my upgrade but I was planning on getting G.Skill Ripjaws X Series RAM and I'm not sure if they'd be able to clear the Frio when it has both fans attached. I was going to get 4x2GB of ram to fit in an Asus P67 board but now I might need to get 2x4GB.

Do you guys think it'll be able to clear all 4 RAM slots or do you at least think I'd be able to fit the G.Skill RAM under the Frio's fan?

I've wanted the Ripjaws RAM for a while now just because it looks awesome so I'm excited that it's finally time to buy it (next time NewEgg has another Desktop RAM discount).

I know for a fact that it won't clear if you've got all four RAM slots filled up. It'll fit just perfectly if you're using the two colored slots furthest away though. That's how it is for dual channel on the P67 right? The same as the RAM arrangement on P55? Pardon me for not knowing that.

I've got the Frio myself and a pair of Ripjaws X on my board, but just two. The heatsinks on the RAM is too tall to fit under the leading fan of the Frio.

^^^ This. The Ripjaws X is 1 & 9/16" from bottom of the pins to top of the heat spreader. The first slot will be covered up by pretty much any leading fan cooler. I'll look around for some of the reviews/pics I've seen proving this... back in a bit.

Fiddled with getting a good shot while running. Here's what I got.

As you can see, it's past the housing for the fan by a few millimeters already. Enough to make it so that you won't be able to fit a stick under it.

Do the 4GB sticks overclock just as good as the 2GB sticks? I'm not sure if the 4GB sticks would have heat problems compared to the temp of a 2GB stick overclocked to the same speed.

I wouldn't know, sorry. I don't overclock these sticks. I run them at their rated speed, 1600 mhz.

I have my Kingston HyperX RAM's fitted to the limit under the Frio right fan, it's like the RAM's were designed to fit under that cooler lol, and I'm running 4 sticks which is 8GB total.

If the HyperX RAM was red I'd probably go with that instead. I'm trying to go with a red and black theme in my case.

Oh I see.. I think G.skill has the same height as the Hyperx.. but I'm not sure though, someone may need to confirm this..

    their RAM is red too:
    EDIT:

The 4GB models seems to be out of stock on newegg..

BTW! don't get the ones on the newegg's web, they're a 1GB models per stick, so you would have 4GB per the 4 sticks which is useless, the other link I edited is the amazon link which has the 2GB per one stick.. idk though about the Ripjaws being designed for that board, but it seems both will work just fine :)..

Anyways 8GB isn't that much needed for gaming.. when I added two more HyperX's over the 4GB's I had I didn't notice any difference in the games performance at all, so yea.. the Ripjaws 4GB models will do just fine.. but a 1 year from now? who knows how much the upcoming games will take.. until that day comes then you may need to upgrade your cooler and just get another 4GB's Ripjaws ..

you just have to be careful with the ram voltages, the kit on amazon is 1.8v which is alot considering P67 is a "max" of 1.5 and X58 is a "max" of 1.65

TBH the "designed for P67" is a gimmick, its just ram, its not as if it has a special process to go through to be good for P67

If you go down to where people reviewed that ram.. some guy stated that these specs amazon typed is wrong, the ram actually runs at 1.5 stock :)

The Ripjaws X RAM is 1.5V. What happens if it goes over 1.5V (sorry for the noob question)?

4GB is still a pretty good amount of memory even for video editing lol, the 8GB IMO is overkill for everything, and it's more likely a future proof amount..

Actually, 8GB has really helped me out in Photoshop. It makes it much easier for me to work with high res, multi-layer projects with ease with little to no stutter.

Unless the OP needs to run the same thing then I would also recommend going with the 8GB, I thought he meant some video editing for average using..

Currently I suck at image editing so none of my pictures are really big but hopefully I'll get better because I'll need the skills for making textures for 3d models. I really don't know how deep I'm going to get into video editing. It just depends on if I like it or not.

now that u mention 3d models, i would have to recommend 8gb over 4. I have six and c4d is always saying not enough ram when i use large textures with large renders or do any particle rendering.

That's why I passed on the Ripjaws cause those fins on the heat spreader stick up too far. Dont know why you'd need such large cooling fins on RAM anyway.
