I have a friend who wants to donate his old Asus netbook to the Boys and Girls club. He wants to leave the programs on the hard disk but he wants to permanently erase anything he did with them because it was used for business. Can his stuff be undeleted?

I got this from superuser.com, "When you delete a file in your OS, there is no reaction from either a hard drive or SSD. It isn’t until you overwrite the sector (on a hard drive) or page (on a SSD) that you actually lose the data. File recovery programs use this property to their advantage and that’s how they help you recover deleted files. The key distinction between HDDs and SSDs however is what happens when you overwrite a file. While a HDD can simply write the new data to the same sector, a SSD will allocate a new (or previously used) page for the overwritten data. The page that contains the now invalid data will simply be marked as invalid and at some point it’ll get erased. " I think a new drive should be used to receive an image of the old drive with the data deleted.

It would seem I can't do anything for him then. Any suggestions other than a whole new disk involved?

fill the disk with data (for example pics of kittens) then delete it.

I have a better idea. Save WD's post. Make each thread that he has ever made a new text file. That should fill up all the free space.

Or you can use a utility that zeros the drive, such as Darik's Boot and Nuke.
