I will start...

Sears - Christmas shopping this year.

I know I needed this reminder, since Sears isn't always my first choice. It's amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and Sears hasn't withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year?

How does Sears treat its employees who are called up for military duty? By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being called up for active duty.

Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years.

I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at Sears at least once, and be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement & feedback it well deserves.

Pass it on.

I decided to check this before I sent it forward. So I sent the following e-mail to the Sears Customer Service Department:

I received this e-mail and I would like to know if it is true. If it is, the internet may have just become one very good source of advertisement for your company. I know I would go out of my way to buy products from Sears instead of another store for a like item, even if it's cheaper at that store.

This is their answer to my e-mail:

Dear Customer:

Thank you for contacting Sears. The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback.

Sears regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our young men and women can make. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time.

Please pass this on to all your friends. Sears needs to be recognized for this outstanding contribution and we need to show them as Americans, we do appreciate what they are doing for our military!!!

Well seeing that I shop at Sears quite often I'm already supporting them.  I will however forward this in an email to inform others that may not know.

When I come to the USA on vacation I normally go to Sears to buy my jeans. I have been aware for a very long time of their policy of supporting our troops.

It was news to me... I am pleased to see this is not new. Being an owner of a business I recognize the significant financial burden this is on any company, and the message it sends.

I hope others will chime in with other companies that have similar views. We all shop, and I for one want to shop at these types of stores first, regardless of Country of origin...

funny.  I worked for Sears before I enlisted in 1995.   I wasn't a reservist being recalled.  I enlisted for 5 years and Sears offered to hold my job until I got out if it didn't work out.

After 10 years I received a letter from the corporate office asking if I would like to continue as a Sears employee or, if I had made a decision to stay military as a career (which I did), they would cash out my Sears retirement I had contributed to years earlier.

I had been gaining seniority as a Sears employee and they were fully prepared to hold my job and my status in the company until I was done serving.  They mailed me a check and a nice letter and I have been a loyal Sears fan ever since (even without my associate discount).

that was a great company to work for all things considered.

Nice post AB!  I've known that for a long time and whenever I get a chance to shop at sears I always do.  My wife sees me as silly because, while she's looking at clothes, I'm walking around the Craftsman stuff...the "good stuff!"

Edit:  My youngest son works for Sears.  He's a delivery guy in a large city in Arizona...while supposedly going to college...

Makes me wonder if this is a standing corporate policy through all sears affiliates (k-mart, best buy, home depot, lowes, etc.).

I too was unaware of their support.  As a veteran myself, I am always appreciative of those companies that support our troops.  I'll be doing some shopping there for sure.

i have had spooty luck at lowes with my military ID card.  I've been told that they only offer the military discount on specific days (like veterrans day).

other Lowes stores have given me the discount no problem.  seems the military discount word isn't getting out.

I'm glad the American Sears treats their employees better than Sears Canada. Almost everyone at the Sears I used to work at was paid minimum wage and when they eventually did get a raise, it would be like 20 cents.

^^^  You should also note that even though these business, at one point or another, had offered these discounts, they may still be valid or may no longer be in effect.

As most business are locally owned/operated they may not honor the discount in the first place, it just depends on the guy behind the counter sometimes...

As much as I like discounts, I never ask for them. If the person at the register happens to see and know what the I.D. looks like if they glance at my wallet as I go to pay. Then I will accept it. Then you get those people who just somehow sense it, which is kinda creepy.

The best discount is at my favorite bar back home, free. Bar tender (Owner usually) always gets a good Tip though.

HA!  thanks!  I usually wear a jacket that has an Army logo, or some sort of military T-shirt and if the employees notice they volunteer discounts.  I only whip it out at Lowes because I'm there every day.

I was getting first pictures of my daughter with Santa, and the lady was ringing me up, and noticed the symbol on the jacket & asked if I was military.  I said yup, and without question she just handed me the pictures.  I was pretty speechless.
