This is all quite worrying.  I check my connections yesterday an everything seem to be intact.  Lets hope it stays this way.........  Part of me now wants to sell my 480s and pick up a single 5970 so I can avoid this issue.

I would just get a different motherboard it would be cheaper. or do the molex mod...

Exactly.  Especially since it's known to happen with ATI cards as well.

They have not said anything as it goes right now nothing happens until you get hit with the toasty cooked 24 pin on your board.... and other hardware possibly gone...

For all of those that seem confused, this problem is *not* isolated to NVIDIA cards only.  It can happen with ATI and NVIDIA cards, ATI dating back to the later HD4800 series.

I'm getting a Classified 3 as a replacement but Molex mod sure is enticing especially since Classified 3 is definitely a functional downgrade from the E759.  I do not believe that the effect is 100% the same though as the longer trace from the ATX connector to the PCI-E slots still poses a higher risk for something going wrong than the natively installed Molex connector that has its own short-run of traces.  Peter indicated that the traces on the Classified are beefed up, but the question really is how much can they take along the whole trace route before problems happen or something blows.

I might still have to stick it out with the Molex mod if the EK FC block does not fit on the Classified 3.

I really would think that EVGA should offer a factory Molex-mod to resolve this problem for existing boards or step-up everyone to Classified 3 or 4-way Classified.

Look at it from EVGA's point of view.

. If a recall was to go in effect or replacement program activated it would put all boards with out the extra molex power adapter for the PCIE lanes to be returned.

. This would include all X58 boards (maybe even P55)
                  E760 Classified
                  E768 FTW 3
                  E767 SLI 3
                  E758 3X SLI
                  E757 SLI LE
                  E756 SLI MICRO

All these boards would need to be replaced because of people using them in conjunction with GTX 480's or other high end GPU's to cause problems to occur with to much power draw from the boards 24 pin connection.

Now at this point i would see no need for EVGA to upgrade unnecessary boards to people not upgrading to or using high end GPU's so any problems occurring should be dealt with on a case by case bases.

This is how i see it being handled and i view it to be 100% professional on the part of EVGA.

Now here is my personal view on things. This is a perfect example of why ATI vs Nivida can hurt the consumer by pushing over powered products to up one over the opponent. Technology is supposed to go forward with smaller die sizes and better architecture with less or equal power being used. Anything less like drawing more power to get ahead is a side step and in some cases can hurt the consumer as we are seeing it first hand here in this case with the 24 pin.

If anything this is ATI and Nvidia's mess and they should put a disclaimer on there product saying !Do not use on motherboard's that do not have extra molex power to the PCIE lanes! Damage may occur !

I stand by EVGA and will be buying a Classy 3 for my next purchase because if anything goes wrong i am perfectly comfortable knowing it will be handled in the most utmost respectful and professional manor.

That sounds great and all Hellcat, but then you got this one customer. This customer doesn't pay attention to the forums, and has a 759 or 760. This customer has either QuadSLI or TriSLI with either a high end ATI or 295, 470 or 480 GPU platform. And he has no idea of this problem and his house is reduced to ash. When the fire inspector comes back and says the fire started from his computer, and if he happens to learn about this issue. That lawsuit, will dwarf the cost of replacing every single board by a longshot.

Now I've been buying EVGA hardware for a long time, 5xxx series, AMD Motherboards kinda long time. This entire new platform of motherboards from EVGA starting with they're own design X58's has been problematic. With them venturing into this area of the hardware business I am sure they expected some issues. Now they're forged a decent start into this market for only being just under 2years into custom designed motherboards. But something like this stands to put them in a very bad spot in the community. They're stance on this issue currently is doing nothing but pushing sales towards they're number one rival, ASUS. A official statement on this matter, even if it's a copout statement would be better than they're current stance. I have 4 computers in my house each with 3-4 pieces of EVGA hardware in each one. And I can tell you forsure that if they cannot take a proper stance on this issue my next build will not contain any. I would rather spend money elsewhere than with someone who would continue to allow they're customer to burn up hardware over they're own mistake.

Might give molex mod a shot.  Do both yellow wires go to pin #1?  I have a molex with one yellow, two black, and one red.  Red being on pin #4. Just move red wire to pin#1 I'm assuming by looking at picture of mod?  Thanks

Jacob said "This issue is not related to the specific motherboard, if you search around, you will find others that are not specific to EVGA."

So i still think they are doing what they can under the circumstances.

And for the consumer that just goes out and buys the best gpu because someone told them it was the fastest and didn't do there homework on how much a mountain mod case with 150 fans with 10 HD's in raid and 480's in quad SLI could draw a boat load of power shouldn't even be handling such things if you ask me.

I do understand your theory and it makes perfect sense; however, I draw the line at the potentiality of loss of life or limb.  There needs to be an official statement to stop the speculation.  At the very minimum an investigation into solving this issue and letting customers know what is being done.  I agree that Nvidia/ATI are not without fault in this, but they are not making the boards that don't have the necessary PCIe power.  I also agree that it will be corrected and dealt with in the near future.  Hopefully it won't need to be forced in a court of law.

Also.. It doesnt catch fire.. The pins heat up, expand, melt the plastic and the further expansion cuts off the connection so its pretty self limiting... In order for fire to be started, it would have to sustain a bad contact for a period of time to ignite the plastic. Also if the pins were to start to glow, then they would quickly oxidise and again cut off the connection.

SirJamesDDJ

This is apparently an issue which is in the Rampage III manual:
Aight, consulting the manual on the Rampage III Extreme it says that for those using multiple graphics cards the two Molex 4-pin power connectors should be utilized
http://www.overclockers.c...howthread.php?t=656867
Anyone with this board confirm this?

Yah James - I downloaded the RIIIE manual (I linked to where you could download it in another post on the last page I think) and on page 2-46 where it talks about all of the 8 pin power and such it says the two "ez-plug" power connectors should be in place for a multi gpu setup.

The link to the manual.

Blaming EVGA for damage to unrelated components in ..3 ..2 ..1

Those making unsubstantiated claims of fact about EVGA should realize that EVGA can also hire lawyers to sue you. Now even 1 molex is not enough?

Falcon_CMH, may I ask, do you design and build motherboards for a living and are qualified to do so? I am hoping the answer is yes, because after making inflammatory statements with no substantiation, you went on in the very next post to made a comment at someone else tgat "I am pretty sure your not qualified to say what damage could or could not happen".

This sort of holier-than-thou crap just makes me angry. If you are not a professional mobo designer, pull your head in and stop needlessly exacerbating the situation. Please.

You guys are gonna get this thread locked...take it to PM.
My main purpose is just comparing it to another board, which says in the manual that molex, 2 actually, should be utilized. That and Shammy saying in June '09 that it was an issue with the Classified.
Not making any accusations, on my part. Simply discussing the facts.
Let's keep it that way.

We know you hope it gets locked - You've stated it several times and seem to be making sure to go out of your way to remain combative in that effort.

As for the speculation comment - Perhaps. However, I am sure you are not new to the internet and when dealing with peoples money and best interests speculation can certainly lead to being framed as fact when no response from the party it originated from is being made.

Either offer something constructive to the conversation or just leave said conversation. Thanks.

@Rona 1012, thank you, but you do not need to exacerbate things by adding to it and attacking me. Please go back and read this page carefully. Falcon has repeatedly given opinions, seemingly more and more increasingly panicked imho, but he's entitled to. What bothered me is that he then put someone else down for having a different opinion. THAT is what I was calling him out for. End of story.

edit: oh, you just changed the wording of your post. I should have used a quote. Nevermind.

I made this post to warn people, Antec thats right Antec stated a fire could start esp when the psu goes under from this issue, they also stated once the psu goes under it could take hardware with it. Please stop flamming my post Nereus your going to get it locked. The post on extreme systems shows there is an issue. You cannot argue against that, nor can you argue against what Antec as said.  They even said get a different board... so people are left with that, or do the molex mod or wait to experience something like what I have gone though and it could be alot worse they could lose every bit of hardware in thier system, or a fire could break out from a short happening from this. Or they might just walk away with just a burnt 24 pin and mobo...

This post is here to look out for everyones interest to keep them informed so they dont have to deal with what I have and others not knowing what it was to begin with. Please do not get this thread locked over a flame war.  This was an issue with all early extreme overclocking motherboards no matter what the vendor... But the fact that they knew is the part that has me personally annoyed the most... I could had avoided this sadly but whatever..., after playing with my machine the past couple days I think my ram got zapped too... Do not get my post locked...

Ok I give up. Clearly a few of you are determined to vilify EVGA and anyone who does not agree with you. Have at it. This is just bs now.

edit: LOL and now Donta edited his thread I am responding to with this post.. you guys are really too much.

I'm not trying to exacerbate it - I just wish you both would chill so hopefully people can get a solution to a sincere problem. Which, is what I asked of you both.

Well, if that is the case I can say I am not one of them. I have this board and I just want to know what the solution to the problem is. If I didn't have this board I likely wouldn't even be in this subforum of the boards!

What I don't understand is several of us have contacted EVGA Technical Support and we are told it only happens under certain configurations but can't be told what said configurations are. The answer could be that simple. Those with these boards may not like it but it's a clear definitive answer, which is what most of the people who are overly concerned in this thread are looking for.

C'mon Shannon, chime in on what we should do.  Is EVGA putting together some press release or should we not expect anything from you guys?  It might be rare occurances but it is happening from the looks of it.

 Damn Shannon left the party.

i am just going to guess, after 1.5 years and 6 gpu's that i might be safe.  my E759 classified shows no sign of damage, and i have been running my 480's since release.  it is very good information to know that it could happen though.  i will keep my eye out for any damage on the 24pin just in case.  but it sounds like evga is at least hooking people up with their latest and greatest,  it would still be a sad day to see my e759 board go up in smoke

@ nereus:  Do you own a 759 or 760 with multiple 480s?

No I don't own 480's. Again, for the FIFTH time, I posted today because of a certain someone putting someone else down for having an opinion. A few people trying repeatedly to twist it into something else does not change this fact.

I have also posted up right-angled molex solutions for Donta, and linked that mod thread for another user who asked about it prior this last page or two of bs, so cut it with the accusations of me being here to flame.

I will try not to post any further on this, but please, EVERYONE is entitled to an opinion, so don't put others down if you don't happen to agree with them, particularly when your opinion is no more substantiated than theirs. That is what prompted me to comment today, and how this somehow got turned into me being some sort of pariah is just ridiculous.

Holy cow.  All I did was ask if you own some components.

What I'm trying to gauge is the difference in feelings between those of us who are in the "possible" potential for problems and those that are not.  It's easy to be on one side of the fence or the other depending on your actual stance.  I want to see if my own personal feelings are clouding my perception or not also.  Thanks...you helped me with that a great deal.
