They specifically asked are you using an EVGA x58 Classified by any chance... so no its not thier psu causing it, its happening with other psu's look at the link i posted with other people on these forums with the same issue. It is a flaw a flaw that is to the extent of evga dropping the 760 classified and coming out with the Classified 3 that infact has a power connector on the board so this does not happen. Take a deep breath and look at the facts.
http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=536713&high
I was also pmed that people with 759/760 boards that had this happened got a Classified 3 so this would not happen again...

The Silverstone Strider Plus 1200W is not very good and they have horrible customer service... get another TPQ 1200 from RMA.  Anyway what happened to you sucks... ASUS has fine boards anyway so you should be happy.

I love my EVGA B-Stock motherboard!

GL on your bstock motherboard hope you dont have high end 400 series in it, otherwise you will eventually run into what I have... aka moelted placstic in the 24 pin slots and a ruined psu that you cannot rma because its not the psu's fault but a defect with EVGA's older x58 line...

mine is 758, so it's high end :)

Re:EVGA X58 759 Classifed Limited Edition #551 down... going to get an ASUS....=/ 2010/10/07 12:16:12 (permalink)
Guys I can confirm that some sort of problem exists with the power draw on these boards.  My TPQ-1200 OC (same as the PSU seen here http://www.xtremesystems....howthread.php?t=239539 and same PSU as EVGA SR-2 PSU) was blown on this board as well.  It appears that in multi-card combination the board will sometimes (not always) draw too much power through the +12V pins on the 24-pin ATX connector causing at best the pins to burn out, and at worst blowing the PSU and/or the board itself.  After speaking to Antec, they are apparently working closely with EVGA to resolve this as the issue is not isolated just to Antec but could show up on any high powered system with multi-card setups.  Based on the best information I was able to get from Antec a BIOS fix from EVGA is in order for this problem and should be able to resolve it.

Just for the record I ran the TPQ-1200 OC for about 3 months before the pins finally burnt.  I am currently using Corsair AX1200, and waiting for Antec to replace the TPQ-1200 OC.  Hopefully the Corsair does not bite the dust as well, especially with it's single rail design.

@donta1979 - Just as an FYI for you I have owned Asus R2E and still own an Asus R2G board and I can tell you that those are not without their share of problems either.  I can assume only the same is true for R3E and R3G.  Don't expect smooth sailing there either.

Yeah I am sure the Asus board has its own share of issues, but from all the people I have spoken with it has alot less to iron out over what evga is offering, not to mention I wont have to worry about my 24 pin melting/burning on me due to a flaw. Waiting on Shannon to contact me atm, But 2x psu's hoping antec will rma my TPQ 1200w but was in the middle of rendering my next demo reel and needed something now... At this rate I am not going to be ready for the Digital Domain Job fair... really sick of working off of small contracts and I litterally live 20 minutes away from thier new facility... that gives me an advantage on getting hired, but yeah... renders stop not going to happen...

from what i read on the link you posted Donta of it happending to other people, it looks like Antec did RMA the psu's for people with that issue.  Ide hate to see you out of an expensive PSU especially 2 of them.  Man and you just finished your blackbird build not too long ago either.

Cool good to know, EVGA is going to send me a Classified 3. Yes thats cool and all, was told the extra power adapter on the mobo will make sure this does not happen again unless the psu is faulty... But this also proves my argument with someone that there is a factory defect and why the Classified 3 came about, Not really sure I want to put an EVGA board into my machine again after this=/ 2x psu's and 3 months of issues has me going meh... But I get a new board as an upgrade=) Just hope all is fine after all of this Thank you Shannon.

I would have a hard time calling it a defect, considering the boards you are mentioning came out before the 400 series cards were released, That would be like saying a Ford model A has a defect, because it didn't have seatbelts, when seat belts, and  saftey galss, was not introduced untill 1948, and were not compulsary untill Austrilia made it a law , in 1964, the rest of europe in 1965, and the US in 1967.  Is the IBM Xt defeacive , because it did not have a DVD player , Or USB ports ?

I contacted EVGA now directly too about my problem as it is the exact same thing as yours and Antec is warning me to replace the board otherwise I will be in for more trouble, wether Antec or Corsair, or w/e.  We'll see what happens.

There is definitely a problem.  Antec has already confirmed an issue with EVGA according to their reps that I have spoken to.  Just for your information, I do not have the 400 series cards.  I run ATI HD5800 series in a multi-card setup.

well the other board makers that included this extra power pin back then when this board came out that do not have this issue, I would call it a defect and a real issue. Also would explain why the 760 is eol and replaced with the 770 does it not? only upgrades are usb 3, sata 6 and of course the extra power connector on the board to keep this sort of thing from happening. A known defect shamino reported with some high power consumption ati cards awhile ago. So your post is flawed because its been here for awhile the 759/760 boards and this issue of higher power conumption cards burning the 24 pins now its just NVIDIA cards that have been added to the list of ATI's. Stuff happens yes, who could had forseen this kind of thing happening? But the ati cards causing the issue should had been the red light for alarm tbh.

This seems to be a very serious problem.  Any idea how many people have experienced this on their classified boards?  If everyones boards are effected with this thermal issue it sounds to me like a potential recall considering it's a possible safety hazard.

Donta glad evga took care of you with the upgrade its exactly what I was thinking they should do to resolve your case.  On second thought, is that a fair trade off for the 759 classified with the nf200 which retailed for $500?  All you get is usb/sata3 minus the nf200 limited edition board.

If you decide to go with Asus just beware of their customer service, if any.  I've gone to hell and back with them for my laptop and hear tons of bad things which are apparantly true.  If that was an asus board I bet they would've called it physical damage or something and charged for the rma.  Don't get me wrong they make nice products but lack in other areas which I find much more important.  Good luck.

What type of bios you were using when this happened, Donta? I would like to know and your help will be appreciated

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

On the phone with tech support, states that they know it is a problem, but cannot do anything about it. It is just a wait and see. They will not do anything to fix this issue.  I think this problem need to be put out there. It is like driving your car when you know it is has a problem, but you drive it anyway. When it blows it is then your problem because you knew it was an issue. So I either return my 480's or buy a different board so I don't have to worry about my system going up in smoke. I know Evga is better then this. But they refused to do anything about it unless your system go up in smoke. I have replaced two power supplies myself, I cannot afford to  lose my system, so I guess it off to fine a new motherboard.

This issue is not related to the specific motherboard, if you search around, you will find others that are not specific to EVGA.

Firstly, the PSU MUST be SLI certified, if it is and you still experienced this issue, send me an email at jacobf@evga.com with the burned connector picture and we have an alternate solution.

Yeah it just seems like an issue for the advanced early gen x58 boards, and the 759/760 where part of that lineup. Other vendors jumped on top of this issue first it seems, the first was EVGA's 4-way classified and now the Classified 3... then Asus has its Rampage III, It seems all of Gigabytes old lineups have been removed from newegg already.

Even if the psu is SLI Certified does not protect it from this. When you put in amd/ati  5xxx card or Nvidia GTX 480"only one we know about right now in a crossfire/sli config, these older gen boards are saying hey we need more power for the gpus. Since these first gen x58 boards do not have the extra power adapter on them to get that extra power to the pcie lanes, it has to come from somplace. That is where the 24 pin burnout comes into play, heating up those 2 main lines shown in a majority of pictures here on the forums and other places as Jacob has shown. Resulting in a killed psu or a burned 24pin psu, or even a burned/dead psu with a burned/dead mobo.  So with SLI psu's or not your still not going to be fine, my Corsair 1000hx was certified, so was my Antec TPQ 1200w. Even a certified psu does not help in this case.

Just bites for many of us who own the 759/760 that have had to go though the meltdown proccess of our 24pins or go though a couple psu's to discover this=/ EVGA does make up for it happening once you hit that point. But having to hit that point first is the scary part  and will leave most with a sour taste in thier mouth...

funny, you know I have rma'ed my powersupplies. Told you that when I spoke to you on the phone. You guys need to come clean before this issue blow up in your face. Or get someones house burns down. All anyone want is to enjoy the products that pay good money for without the worry of things going to the birds. Recall the boards or at least offer a choice to the ones that don't want to live with this issue.

Yeah that is the thing I am going about gaining usb 3/ SATA 6 but losing 16x16x16x=/ but if I go with a 759 again.... I am going to be out yet one more psu, and there is no telling if it will take the rest of my rig with it or not... I really like the nf200 chip...
I was using the 74 bios

Thanks for the reply Donta1979. I am thankful that I decided not to update the bios that much on my board.
I am very sorry to hear this has happened to you, and I am glad EVGA has stepped up and gave you the upgrade to the Classified 3. although you may loose a couple things or two
Post your thoughts about how the Classy3 measures up to your needs once you get it. Hopefully, a new Bios should fix this issue, in a way or two.

Ya know, I wonder what the cost is of switching out the 759's and 760's to classified 3's vs the cost of a lawsuit when someone's house does go up in flames now that this problem is well documented. IMO, better to lose a little then lose ALOT. Someone's house goes up in flames, it's gonna hit 6 figures quick. Someone is asleep and doesn't make it out.. welll... Who's gotta sleep at night because of that? I am just going to stop leaving this thing powered up while I am not home until a real solution presents itself. And to think last week EVGA was workin hard on convincing me on the phone to switch from dual 295's to dual or tri 480's. Atleast your PSU's are under warranty, I have ABS Tagan's and they are well.. out of business but my PSU's function fine in all my machines so no need to replace them yet.

Are we saying this is a 480 problem only, does it happen with 470's, 460's ? Is it only Tri SLI, sli, or does it also happen with 1 card ?

Well the problem isn't with the card.  But I assume that any card that would draw more power than the PCI-E cables are supplying would have this issue.  GTX 480s can easily draw over 300W if you overclock enough, and that extra power comes from the PCI-E slot.  This is where that 4-pin molex connector comes in handy, if your motherboard has it (the one near the PCI-E slots).

It can happen in any multi-card setup pretty much.  I use HD5800 series as I stated before and it happened to me.

Don't mean to play devil's advocate here, but dang! There is a real fire hazard here! I just upgraded my power supply from OCZ GameXstream 700w to a Corsair AX1200, to power 3x480's.

Um..... Don't want my house to burn down or anything. I have a family. I checked the 24-pin and it's dang hot.

Evga should recall all these boards and exchange them for Classy 3's.

I know I am going to contact them and demand a replacement. That's too many people with burnt mobos.

Single cards not sure yet, but sli or tri sli definatly would have to go over the post I linked, the ones Jacob and others linked to find out. What is happening on some ATI 5XXX cards and Nvidia 480's in sli/tri sli configs that we know about now is the gpus even at stock need x amount of power from the pcie lanes, when we dont have the extra power connector on the board the power needed needs to come from someplace that being the 24pin. This is when it heats up, melts, can cause fire, can kill the psu, or can kill your entire system..

The heat your getting is the first signs, next will be jumping voltages on your 3.3v 5v 12v,dissapearing ram then will be random green screens, shut downs, then the phase is the burning of the 24pin=/ psu failure, or even worse frying of the entire computer if psu crap the bed from it, or a fire....
I've noticed games or benching that really pushes your cards speeds up the proccess of this happening.
