Questions regarding SSD boot drive and HDD raid.

I recently purchased an SSD and have read that the best mode to install it in is AHCI. So of course i go ahead and do this. Its only 120Gb so its going to be for the OS and games/programs.

Now i had 2x640WD HDDs that used to be in a raid 0 but i figured i would remove the date and place them into a raid 1 for data protection since I no longer have need of the speed that raid 0 provided.

However low and behold setting the sata drives to AHCI has made it so my drives are no longer there and can not be accessed during the bios screens to set to raid 1. So i manually set the ACHI to Raid like it previously was, enter the raid configuration screen wipe the drives clean and place into a raid 1 array.

Then it tried to boot into windows but since the SSD is assigned as ACHI and im currently in raid it crashes on boot up. So I place back into ACHI mode and can boot up but my raid 1 drives are no where to by found in my computer...

What do I need to do to get this working the way I want?

SSD as a boot drive and 2 640gb's in a raid 1.

My first and current build

Cosair XMS 6Gb 1600 Mhz

    If you are using the black ports, (Intel) on all your Dives, Go into BIOS and set Sata mode to Raid , ( Any drive not assigned to a raid aray automaticaly defaults to AHCI) Boot and use Control-I to configure the mechanical drives into the type of array you want, raid 0 or 1. ( note you may have to use the Disk manager snap in to allocate and assign before windows will see it, and you will have to install your OS on the SSD before you can do that, You may also want to do a search, for Intel RST, ( Raid storage technology ) version 9.6.0.1014, also note even in raid mode, if your OS SSD is a single non raided drive you still get Trim , using IRST.

    I'm late on this but will confirm that if you run in RAID mode any non member disk will run in AHCI - I have 2 RAID setups on my board and a single SSD on it's own and have had next to no degradation out of it whatsoever.

    Actually, you don't even need to take it off AHCI.  If your booting drive, the SSD, is left in AHCI, you can configure the other two drives as a RAID volume.  Set the SATA to RAID, use CTRL + I to configure your disks in the RAID 1, then set the BIOS back to AHCI.  Should be no problem setting this up.  You can do this for AHCI if you want to add storage drives in a RAID, but not if you want to use AHCI with a RAID as a bootable drive.  
     
    Just make sure to install either the Intel Matrix Storage Manager or the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers after booting back into Windows.
     
    Ultimately, it may be easier to just reinstall Windows with everything in RAID, but if you don't want to, this is how you do it.
