This is a Dual QPI CPU.  It may work, but it is better designed for the SR2 motherboard.

The X58 boards will support Westmeres on the following revisions:

    E757 - rev 1.1
    E758 - rev 1.2
    E760 - rev 1.1
    E762 - rev 1.1
    E767 - all
    E768 - all

New products stock should be these latter revisions already. If needed, you can also have the option of sending your board in to have it modified to support them.

Thanks guys.  I already have my high end gaming-pc built and pimped out, -- the goal here was to build a decent but affordable workstation/server for my home office.  (Thus, SR2 really isn't an option).  I noticed that the only affordable 32nm cpus that have at least four cores are the westmeres.

I use my office PC for developing, virtual machines, to serve as a home file server and very occasionally for gaming.

Is there any real reason NOT to use the Westmere?  It's affordable, quad-core and 32nm.

What negative impact is there in using it in a motherboard not supporting dual qpi (other than not being able to take advantage of dual qpi)?  Would it perform worse than, say, a nehalem desktop cpu rated at the same speed with the same number of cores?

I asked it too. So how long will it take to send you a old 1.0 board and receive it back? Maybe E760 Gulftown mod will work on 758's PCB?
