I need a laptop for work.
Company gave me a budget of 2500 USD.
I parted a (Thinkpad) laptop together already but would like to see what other come up with before I order it.
Its used to write code.
Also use it to create GUIs.
Must support a docking station, be at least 15", run Windows7, have an SSD, and a i7.
I would prefer a laptop and not a ultrabook, notebook, netbook, tablet/notebook hybrid.
Lets see what you can do!

You don't need $2500 imo. $1200 will get you the same results. What is so taxing that you need to go above $1200

I want ( need) a workstation not a notebook. Notebooks fall apart and have integrated parts. The budget is up 2500, what do you have in mind for 1200?

I really don't understand what brute is needed for 'coding'. If you were more descriptive about the laptop's use, you may get better recommendations. For 'coding' I would recommend almost anything. For desktop replacement, I wouod recommend Sager or Clevo when it comes to upgrade options and room to work with (but watch out for that power useage... desktop replacement usually needs to be plugged in pretty much all the time like a desktop would). I have a Sager/Clevo myself with some custom options and aftermarket additions.

Im using (Crestron) Simple+ and VTproE and soon to be Studio. VTpro has been crashing any computer under 16gb memory when you open more than one TSW project. I like the docking station b/c I can go from my desk to a job site and back to my desk with zero issues ( dual monitors at my desk). 3rd party USB 3.0 docks have video problems. The programs and our time cost ten of thousands of dollars so reliability is key.

It sounds like you could make a lot of money re-coding their crappy design studio software. :-P
Be warned that a desktop replacement is usually a power hungry beast which usually doesn't run much more than an hour on the battery and may have unexpected crashes when going from plugged-in to battery-powered. The idea of going from docked to mobile and back to docked concerns me a little as far as the desktop replacement niche is concerned. Otherwise, desktop replacement has a lot to offer. I have a Sager branded / Clevo built desktop replacement with a decent i7 processor, Samsung SSD, 1080p IPS panel, GTX 680m, and full keyboard among other things.

Sager puts out some decent laptops. I used to own one a while back, it was a nice desktop replacement at the time. You get a lot more hardware for your money with Sager. Only problem i'd have right now is MSI and their 3K monitors.

I only know of one brand that allows DIY laptops, rjtech.com. It isn't cheaper than other laptop customization webstores, but then that is the price you pay for custom-modularity with a wide selection. Just pick a chassis if it can support the hardware you want (because not all chassis' are the same, it isn't like the ATX standard) and go from there. You don't have to pick everything they offer, and while you can put it together yourself, they can put it together for free.

Yeah, I dont get why its so memory intensive. Its crappy now but they will fix it... I hope. Its only been a problem with their latest hardware. I learned this the hard way with my Dell M6600. I went from docked to mobile without shutting down and I kept randomly blue screening. I called Dell and that's the first thing they asked me. The Dell M6600 wasn't to good on battery life too. I get like 2 hours in power save mode, but in performance mode I get about 50 minutes.

Gotta say Im impressed with my y510p the company bought me. 8+ hours of basic use on battery, i7 @ 3.4ghz, 8gig of ram, 1tb/8gbssd hybrid, and a gt755 with 1080 screen 3 year warranty including accidental damage, all for less than $900. Plus, the lenovo prodock can be used on most of the laptops with USB 3. The only problem is it doesn't provide power to charge the laptop so you have to plug in power and the usb 3. MSI is selling barbones laptops that you buy the actual parts for separatly. You can get the i7 you want, and run two ssd in raid, put a quadro card in it, get it with a 4k screen and use whatever ram you want up to 32gb. I think the bare laptop is about $1000. Gotta say the workstation one here is the same shell on my msi and I LOVE IT! The gt60 with a 4k in workstation mode would be BA! http://us.msi.com/news/1640.html

If whatever studio you are using crashes even while using 16gb then that software is trash. Coding itself isn't that demanding. But, compiling can be a little. You really don't need to spend 2500. How ever if your company is letting you spend that much for it. Then you can really build a good dev enviroment laptop.

I chose the Thinkpad because it supports a real dock. The choices you guys gave were awesome and my next personal laptop will be a Sager. Here are the specs I picked out: Intel Core i7-4700MQ W540 NVIDIA Quadro K1100M 2GB windows 7 pro 64-bit Wireless A/C/B/G/N 16gb 4DIMM PC3-12800 128gb SSD Sata3 3K IPS WWAN monitor onsite accidental warrnty 9 cell battery. I picked the small SSD b/c I am adding another SSD I already own. The 3K screen should add some nice real-estate to that 15.6" screen. My other computer was a 17".

My M4800s QHD 3200x1800 needed at least 150% scaling in Windows to even read anything. The other problem with hidpi displays is applications that aren't hidpi aware won't scale properly. You'll have an app that is blurry. Hopefully you don't have to deal with those issues. It's one of the reasons I went back to 1080p on a laptop.

Good warranty for a company laptop too.
I had a three year selected but I got blasted with sales tax ( 200 bucks!). I had to lower the price so I cut the warranty down to a 1 year.

Got my laptop.
Very cool unit. I like the finger scan to log in. The dock is nice a slim too. Battery life is way better then the Dell M6600. Speakers sound great for laptop speakers too.
I removed the DVD drive today and added a 2nd SSD using a SSD/HDD cage.
Overall I am happy with the ThinkPad and cant wait to work with it in the field. The 3K screen is awesome, not for the average user.
I will have to take a picture of my work space on Monday.

This laptop will also pay for itself its first day in the field.

 New ThinkPad next to our Lenovo UltraBook. This finger print scanner is awesome too.  So in the end this computer ended up being 2,200+190 in tax + 220 for the dock ( $2600 in total).
