Thanks Tex and who ever gave me the BR.
If a mod fills this thread would be best placed in the Folding@Home Help and Guides section its fine with me if its moved.
I probably should have started the post thread there anyways.

I'd bet that "Afterburner was here" at least and possibly someone recommended you too.  At any rate that is the kind of stuff that helps people and from what I understand, right down the BR alley.

Yes, I agree that this kind of stuff needs to be over in the Guides section where we've been growing that data quite well these days.  It would be super cool to have it included (or a link to this stuff) in Bowlinra's 4P guide.

Its alive and folding!
Working a standard SMP to start out with
Project: 6944
TPF 1:15
PPD 78.4K

Edit: took another 2 seconds off the time by sudo service mdm stop
and running fah in a pure terminal. TPF 1:13 PPD 81.6K
Project ID: 6944
 Core: GRO-A3
 Credit: 552

Name: H8QGi+F 4P
 Path: \\192.168.1.118\fah\
 Number of Frames Observed: 27
 Min. Time / Frame : 00:01:13 - 81,660.6 PPD
 Avg. Time / Frame : 00:01:24 - 66,157.3 PPD
 Cur. Time / Frame : 00:01:13 - 81,660.6 PPD
 R3F. Time / Frame : 00:01:13 - 81,660.6 PPD
 All  Time / Frame : 00:01:14 - 80,010.9 PPD
 Eff. Time / Frame : 00:01:26 - 63,862.9 PPD

Sure doesn't take much activity in the GUI to make the TPF fall off.
Just borwsing here rased the TPF to 1:26. That's why I'm now in a pure terminal mode.

Great BR Wolf deserved to say the least  :0

I'm sure lots of folks will find it a sound and cheap method :)

I,m still unsure about the pure terminal mode as I only switch on my monitor on the  4p every few days and then as I terminal window is left open, if all looks ok just switch it back off - and idea on if it will help me?

It may, only way to find out is to test.
What Linux version are you running?
ctrl alt F1 will get the terminal, ctrl alt F7 or F8 will get you back to the GUI.
Without know the Linux OS your running I can't tell you the command to kill the GUI.
sudo service mdm stop
sudo service mdm start
is for Mint
I use two terminals, one for fah and the other to issue the command to turn off/on the GUI.
ctrl alt f1 threw f6 or f7 will give a separate terminal.
F7 or F8 will reactivate the GUI if its not turn off with the sudo service command.

12.04.2  :)

I believe the command for 12.04 is
sudo service lightdm stop
sudo servive lightdm start
that or
sudo lightdm stop
and
sudo lightdm start
to restart the GUI.

Edit: if those don't work try
sudo stop lightdm
sudo start lightdm

Thanks, I will need to collect a data base for a couple of different WU's on this install before I try it, so I expect it will be the back end of the week, but I will report back.

A busy day again, so I might not be back on until later this evening

Roger that!
Check my edit above also here is a helpful link to install Nvidia drivers if your using a Nvidia video card.

Another helpful link.

GDM was switched out for LightDM, so:
sudo stop lightdm
Or in your service parlance:
sudo service lightdm stop

Yea me too at this point, actually I don't see much use in putting anything
much better other than to help with the slite slow down I see in the OS.
I started to drop a GT240 or something like that in and still may.
I don't think at this time I'll be attemping any GPU folding on this rig.
But as time goes by and the setup becomes easier for GPU and Linux
I'm sure I will drop a good video card in to fold on. This will become my
daily drive at some point in time I'm thinking.

I had a quick look, and it might not be possible to add an GPU with my current cooler config, it looks like its about 1/8" in the way - the only way to be sure would be to power off and try - that's not on the cards currently.

From you cooler setup the photo indicates it is not an issue for you?

Forgot to mention I picked up my 1st BigAdv, a P8104. 1st frame was 14:30, but quickly
dropped into the 13:30 range in a pure terminal mode, 13:40 is folding in the GUI at the moment.
Anyone know if this is about right for a 6124 32 core rig?
Next thing is to look at updating the bios with the OC bios at H.
I'm guessing it should work for this setup, anyone have a link or info it would be appreciated.

Edit: I haven't actually tested with a GPU, but looks clear enough to add one without problems.
If my fan was on the other side of the H/S it would be close or problems. I choose the way the fans
are because of the air flow I use in the shop to move air.
I started to place them on the back side of the H/S but then realized it be going agenst what I already have setup.

My 4p 6172 did 8104 with a average TPF of 10:22 and minimum of 9:55. The 4p 24c 2.8 ghz 8439's did it with an average TPF of 13:44 so I'd say it's looking pretty good for 6124's.

Looks a bit of a challenge with not the nornal ways of OCing.
Then again maybe not. I looked at some of this early morning
installed and setup, just understand what does what at this point
is my only draw back. I'm sure once you know what everything does
and how it works it'll seem simple after a while.

Ys, i looked at the thread on [H] and it seemed a little harder, so I have yet to take the plunge

I seem the have picked up some conflicting info about it

this did it for me:

NOTE: when flashing manually via AFUDOS.EXE, you must provide SM-mandated options at the end of command line, i.e. /P /B /N /C /R
failure to do so will result in bricked board

wth??

other than that it seemed almost straight forward.......

Re: Supermicro H8QGi+-F G34 Inbound! 2013/04/29 14:47:30 (permalink)
Ya when you manually flash you have to also manually put in the name of the bios file then add the flags at the end.
AFUDOS.EXE XXXXX.BIN /P /B /N /C /R

If you use the flash.bat those things are already included within the flash.bat.
Sometimes you have to edit the flash.bat to match the bios name your using so the name matches.

This is what the inside of the flash.bat looks like:

@echo off
REN AFUDOS.SMC AFUDOS.EXE
STOP_EC3.EXE
AFUDOS.EXE %1 /P /B /N /C /R %2
REN AFUDOS.EXE AFUDOS.SMC
if errorlevel 1 goto UPDERROR
if "%2"=="/X" goto UPDDONE
if "%2"=="/x" goto UPDDONE
:UPDERROR
echo ************************************************
echo  IF BIOS UPDATE FAILS, PLEASE SEE INSTRUCTION
echo IN README FILE
echo ************************************************
goto UPDEXIT
:UPDDONE
STARTEC.EXE
:UPDEXIT

But no where in this .bat is a name of a bios files such as H8QG61.527 that actually comes in the zip package of a legit bios for this Sm board.

So I'm assuming that there is no need to rename the [H] bios file, just remove the H8G61.527 and replace it with [H] H8QG61.A11 bios file when you move those to the bootable USB flash drive.
Edit: or manually flash by typing this : AFUDOS.EXE H8QG61.A11 /P /B /N /C /R
but there isn't a AFUDOS.EXE within the zip file you get from SM there is a AFUDOS.SMC which I think is a compressed file that the flash.bat unpaks when ran. So yea kind of confusing to say the least.
In the old days it wasn't like this. lol

Slaps head, how did I miss this when I read over the flash instructions.

To flash, use:
  flash.bat <filename>

Flashing shouldn't be a problem knowing this.
Old days they included the bios name within the flash.bat and why I said you had to either edit or remname the file to match.

Please get those boards off of the foam and get some airflow under them.  Hate to see you burn something up.

also, on the musky mod, you do not need to drill or tap the bolts, this is more or less an option.  i did not do this on 2 of my 4p boards.  I did it on the others, which makes it much easier to install.

You may even see your cpu temps drop if you get some air across the board.

The Flash went like silk. I saw a big red [H] at boot up! lol
Tested 226 and now on 236Mhz @ 2.124Ghz folding away.
Dropped my TPF from 13:30 to 11:37 amazing.
I hope I'm not done with my OC. Just trying to finish
this 8105 WU before moving forward.

Edit:@scotty I'm under 40c I think I'm fine for now.
Tech Station arrived today so I'll be moving this board to that soon.

On those chips' I would max the volts and crank the refclock.  Start at 240 and work your way up.  Do use a test wu and run 10 frames and then go up 2 more notches.  Rinse and repeat.  Once you find the spot where it fails, back down 1 notch and repeat until it runs stable.

Then, use production wu.

Lookin' forward to seeing your new G34 on the Spotswood Tech-Station Wolf!  I think you and I may be the only "extruded aluminum" Folders on the team at this point.  Ya know that Folding on extruded aluminum adds 5K in PPD to your rigs don't ya?  Aluminum underwear and a hat to match...maybe even a bit more.

How about the OC?  Juice them puppies up and push it.  They are non ES so even at max you are no where near board limits, especially on those chips.  8 cores and HE is nothing in terms of power draw.

Some music.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps0MfBG5-Uo

Crank it up!!!!!

Also, what is the output of tpc-dram?

Run w/o quotes "sudo tpc -dram | pastebinit"  You may need to install pastebin.

Only changes I have made at this point in time is to the refclock.
Bumping 10mhz at a time. Now up to 256mhz stable with no other changes.
I did notice the DRAM clock has now changed to 800mhz and still stable with tight timings.
If what is shown is the correct reading for timings, the 800mhz also showed at boot up.
