I recently saw the thread dedicated to Afterburner (GPU Folding) and was astonished at the amount of folders here. I wanna taste it for myself. I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about folding but Mr Warthorn briefed me a little about it. I think get it. I was thinking of using my old q6600 that i have which is currently doing its job of collecting dust. But the problem is, i cant afford to spend 1000$ on a *second* rig. l'll use this rig also as my secondary rig for other stuffs like pron and as my alarm clock. I only have $250-280 to spare. Yea, laugh. Im an unemployed student. I need to save up at least 2k by the end of the year for a complete water cooling system (the one in my rig & also the one that im gonna build now) So, money wise, my pocket is very slim. So here's my choice: Gigabyte P45 UD3R Gskill Pi Black 1066 DDR2 4GB Im very sorry that i cant choose EVGA. Anyway, my question: a) is that mobo ok? I heard that is the most stable mobo for its price b) is the ram ok? i also heard that they are stable with this mobo. I understand the fact that the i5s and i7s are ideal for folding but *sigh* I was saving up for the fermnis but nevermind. There is nothing wrong in getting experiences.

Welcome to the F@H club. I just started doing it last week and, let me tell you, if you have dual GPU's, but a single monitor, it's a pain to get everything working. As for the unemployed student thing, I hear ya, I can fully empathize. Gigabyte makes good motherboads as does Gskill for RAM. Can't comment on those exact models, however, as I never had any experience with them.

You'll get a better idea of the # of folders here by looking at, http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_list.php?s=&t=111065&u=451145#451145 Not everyone that folds follows the threads. ( Notice there are 61 pages like that, so about 6,100 folders.

Welcome to folding! While I don´t know about the mb and ram you´ve posted ,any socket 775 mb that supports your q66 will do. If you plan on adding more gpus later on, look for a mainboard that has as many pcie slots as possible. And if it makes you feel better, most of my folding mainboards are msi amd boards.

OP, your MOBO and RAM are very much OK for the purpose! If you're going to fold 24/7, use linuxrouter's 1.1 image, otherwise, use 1.0: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=4464 Depending on your OC, you should be able to get 4000+ PPD running all four cores on the Q6600...

I'm a very dedicated folder, but I"m going to go ahead an say if your wallet is very slim, it might not be the best idea to invest in a folding rig/setup right now. Especially since once you give it some overclocks, it's going to start cutting into your power bill. Just some advice from one poor college student to another.

I think the Gigabyte board is the best choice. Mine has been the best out of all the ones I have, sorry EVGA but your mobo's have been the worst for folding. I have personally never used G Skill ram but have not heard anything negative about it either. What kind of video card do you have? There are basically two types of clients, as we call them(they are actually programs), one that uses your cpu and one that uses each video card. Setting up gpu folding on more than one video card with only one monitor is easy actually(referring to sinsear's comment). Read these two guides first and then post back with questions. https://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=9778 this link is for folding on your cpu which I would recommend this setup over Linuxrouter's since you have a socket 775. LR's setup would be better for an i7. https://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?high=&m=9849&mpage=1#9849 this link is for one or more gpu setup.

Gigabyte P45 boards are usually great clocking boards. i7 is where its at right now, so I would hold off and save, take advantage of the 2nd hand market, or deals from other Folders like ^.

Oh yeah, go second hand wherever possible. Be it the marketplace place here or on another forum. Folders are usually giving you good deals if you mention you´re gonna use it for folding as well. Set up a wtb thread in the market place and mention you want to use the stuff for folding I´m sure you get plenty of offers on hardware from people that are upgrading

Simply comment on the MB you suggested, this Gigabyte MB is rock solid, I have exactly the same in my office and it fits your Q6600. I have GSkill ram but not the model you suggested. So far I don't find any negative on this brand. So your rig is fit for CPU folding. You do not mention what kind of VGA card you have. If you do not have much budget, you may try 9800GTX or 9800GX2. As suggested by Barbarossa, go second hand cards is one of your choice!! Song

Can't you fold on your main system the new windows client gets some decent ppd after you submit 10 wu's with a passkey and the deadlines aren't as strict and it takes less time to complete a wu. I only have 1pc so I just run folding on it I leave it on 24/7 and I haven't had a problem I basically only turn folding off for gaming I leave it on the rest of the time.

Sorry i havent replied. I was busy thinking about this. So here it is. The Wall of Reply barbarossa If you plan on adding more gpus later on, look for a mainboard that has as many pcie slots as possible. Im not very sure about adding more gpus especially with my studies being my first priority. Maybe ill get an i7 system later on. Just maybe. stitches Can also try posting in the folding section of the forum. Great bunch of helpful folks there who will guide you to folding properly Will do so once i sort all out. Gryphon OP, your MOBO and RAM are very much OK for the purpose! If you're going to fold 24/7 Thank you, sir. 24/7 might be quite hard for me since the electricity bill is gonna double or even triple. Since i build the tig in my sig, my bill doubled. taniquetil I'm a very dedicated folder, but I"m going to go ahead an say if your wallet is very slim, it might not be the best idea to invest in a folding rig/setup right now. Especially since once you give it some overclocks, it's going to start cutting into your power bill. Just some advice from one poor college student to another. I agree. It is pretty stupid to do this as this is not the right time, money wise and personal wise. I might not leave it 24/7. But hey, its all for the community. ( the very community that called me an alien..nvrmind) horvat I think the Gigabyte board is the best choice. Mine has been the best out of all the ones I have, sorry EVGA but your mobo's have been the worst for folding. I have personally never used G Skill ram but have not heard anything negative about it either. What kind of video card do you have? Owh thanks. Gigabyte boards are super solid from ive heard. Never tried them before though. This is gonna be the first time. EVGA is really bad for F@H? I have a 760, i thought of using that for secondary folding . But since you said so, i might avoid it? My GPU decision is stated at the very end of this never ending post. SimC Lonely stoner...do you have the cash to get an i7? Because I have a *BRAND NEW* EVGA X58 LE mobo coming from EVGA as we speak and wouldnt mind selling it to a fellow folder...let me know... I wish. I spent most of my money of my main rig (sig) and even that is not complete because of insufficient money. And with that still dangling, i am gonna build yet another rig. Anybody who hears this might assume im a complete nutcase. I would love to buy that SimC; i really do. But the reality blocks my intention. Sorry. theonedub Gigabyte P45 boards are usually great clocking boards. i7 is where its at right now, so I would hold off and save, take advantage of the 2nd hand market, or deals from other Folders like ^. If you read my OP, yo'll know that i have another water build and fermnis on the waiting list. The string holding all this is very thin. Adding more weight onto this wont do me got. AntiLogic I say if you have the parts laying around go ahead and build it. The mobo and RAM will be fine for folding. Welcome to the club! That is the decision on the top of my list. Just slap it all together and ride it. Thanks. Barbarossa Oh yeah, go second hand wherever possible. Be it the marketplace place here or on another forum. Set up a wtb thread in the market place and mention you want to use the stuff for folding I´m sure you get plenty of offers on hardware from people that are upgrading Im always against second hand items especially in tech. Idk why, its already nailed in my mind. I would like to work for that thing. I could buy but money is blocking me; hard. Plus, i live in south east asia and shipping cost, time, reliability are all problems that are really serious especially regarding computer parts that are very delicate. Trust me, i have seen secure and sturdy packaging being raped by shipping. I will consider buying from the EVGA forum's members that are super awesome when i finally muster up some franklins. songbildes Simply comment on the MB you suggested, this Gigabyte MB is rock solid, I have exactly the same in my office and it fits your Q6600. I could but member Horvat says that EVGA mobos are not ideal for folding. Not sure why though. Honestly, what is PPD, WU? I think PPd is the points you get maybe? _________________________________________________________- Ok. Sorry for the long Wall of Reply. Regarding the GPU. im pretty tied up. Since buying a low end gpu (as my sig) is basically wasting my money. I did a couple of research. Its whether the 9800 GTX or the GTX 260. 9800 gtx = linky link 1 gtx 260 = linky link 2 Funny eh? The 9800 is more expensive than the 260. My plan is to get the 260 and put it in my main rig (sig) and take the 8600gt and place it in the folding rig. What you guys think? PS: Here's the currency: USD 1.00 = RM 4. RM is my country's (malaysia) currency. Yup. 4 times more.
