I noticed that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is released today for download and I was wondering if any of you "bleeding edgers" are going to give it a go on DC? I'm thinking about giving it a try on one of my rigs where it won't matter and all I do is DC. The download is available here if anyone is interested: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso

Well, grabbing a copy of Win 8 (64bit) was no big deal and if anyone wants to try this, I'd definitely install it to a different partition with dual boot. First impressions of Win 8 are not that good, but it's early and all that kind of stuff/commentary should go into another forum. Getting Boinc running under Win 8 basically (for me) required rolling back to a 32bit version 5.8.16. The other two more recent 64bit Boinc versions (6.12.34 and 6.10.60) would not install and experienced a "failed to add user to the 'boinc_admins' group" error during installation. Just for grins, I'm running a couple of Help Conquer Cancer units that only take about an hour to complete anyway. Probably too many early adopter issues to make this worthwhile and I don't know that there is any advantage to Win 8 either. But I was curious to see how it looked and if I could get Boinc to run.

Just a quick update for those that are interested. I ran a full load (8-units on my 2600K) of Help Conquer Cancer. They completed just fine under Win8, but again I'm having to use an older version of Boinc. By comparison, I ran a full load of HCC units under Win7 (with WCG version of Boinc 6.10.58) on that same PC and saw no significant difference in completion time for the 8 units. Win8 completed each unit in ~1hr 7mins and Win7 completed them in ~1hr 8mins. From what I can tell, both Boinc (5.8.16) and the WCG version (6.10.58) are 32bit versions, so they were similar for the test. I wasn't really expecting something significant with Win8, but just wanted to see if any noticeable difference would emerge. Given my current distaste for the Win8 visual/functional layout, I'm sticking with Win7 and Mint12 as my OS's of choice. Based on what I've seen so far with Win8, it will be a skipped upgrade for me unless I see some compelling reason to do it.

thanks for all the updates tex! Doesn´t sound too promising (as the main OS). Did you try just the metro or the old desktop as well? I´ve run out of HDDs to try out myself

It must be some kind of permissions deal on the OS side. Problem is it's too hard to navigate through W8 to figure it out. (not that I could anyway). I haven't had the time so far and may not until next week. I would strongly suggest to install on it's own hdd and disconnect your current drive as W8 isn't exactly forthcoming about where it's installing itself. Or do a custom install and take the reins.

Barbarossa Doesn´t sound too promising (as the main OS). Did you try just the metro or the old desktop as well? I did use both GUIs (Metro and Desktop). I think Metro would mean more to me on my Tablet PC, but on my Desktop PC I really don't like it at all. So, it didn't take me long to locate the Win8 Desktop GUI after using Metro. However with the Win8 Desktop, it feels like a cut down version of the Win7 Desktop. Just shutting Win8 down takes like 4-5 mouse clicks (unless you create an applet for it on the Metro Screen). With no touchscreen capability on my Desktop PC (and I don't want it either), it really seems (to me) that Microsoft is assuming the average Desktop PC user would somehow embrace the Metro GUI. I do have to say that I have not spent a ton of time with Win8, but it has not presented me with any "wow, I want this" kind of feelings so far.

Yes, you definitely want to do at least (2) things to test drive Win8. Of course, a good backup image of your Win7 is a default condition. First, create a partition on your existing Hard drive (or use another hard drive) so that Win8 can live in it's own space apart from Win7. [Edit] There are also some reports (from Win8 Consumer installers) of people borking the MBR (Master Boot Record) on the Win 7 drive when they chose to install Win8 to a separate HDD. So, just be careful with that one. Second, convert the Win8 ISO image to a DVD, boot from it and then select that separate partition or hard-drive as the installation location. I don't really like how the dual-boot screen is managed with Win8 though (not as clean/easy as with Win7)...you'll see what I mean if you install Win8 in a dual-boot manner.

Update: I'm dual-booting nicely between W8 and Mint12 KDE and surprise of surprises, somehow got Boinc version 6.12.34(x64) installed on W8. (Just persistence I believe)

Good going Yodap! Wonder what you did differently to get the latest Boinc version installed in Win8? I kept trying different things (run as admin, run in compatibility mode, etc) and never could get through with 6.12.34.

Yodap, I downloaded and installed .Net Framework 3.5 from the Microsoft site and it went OK. Verified it was installed, deinstalled the old 32bit version of Boinc, and then restarted the PC for a fresh go. I attempted to install Boinc 6.12.34 again and got the same error as before, so no go yet. It's not a big problem for me anyway because I'm only playing with Win8 and not depending upon it for Crunching or anything else. Thanks for the suggestion though.

What's the best VM to install this on? I tried using VMWare, but you only get about 1/3 screen dedicated to the VM, which I couldn't get to maximize. Very annoying, especially with the new layout. Is there a VM that will provide a full screen? That's the first time I've ever used one (and I must say was very surprised at how easy it was) just the lack of full-screen that has stopped me from experimenting more on it.

Simba, I have zero knowledge on VM, wish I could help, but hopefully someone with the VM-smarts will be along that can answer it for you.

An update to getting Boinc installed into my copy of Win8 Consumer Preview. I ran across a thread over in the Boinc Forum while searching for another topic that eventually led me to getting Boinc installed in Win8. Here's a link to that thread: http://boinc.berkeley.edu...rum_thread.php?id=7346 Also, if you would like to have access to all Boinc versions, here's a link that will get you to these additional versions that are not shown on the Boinc client software download page: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/ The thread suggestion of using Boinc version 6.12.43 did not solve the recurring problem with getting this error during Boinc installation: "failed to add user to the 'boinc_admins' group". But it did lead me to trying several other different Boinc versions above that level 6.13.xx, 7.0.xx, etc. When I finally tried version 7.0.18 (development version), I saw something new in the installation dialogue window (as shown below) called "Protected Application Execution". Selecting that new option finally allowed me to install Boinc version 7 in Win8. I also tested the Boinc Ver 7 installation a couple of times by not selecting the "Protected Application Execution" option and I would get the same installation error as before. I have not extensively tested version 7.0.18 and it is a "development version", but thought I'd share this update.

Thanks for the BOINC install info, Tex. Simba123 What's the best VM to install this on? Not sure if it's the best, but you can install it on Virtualbox. I'm installing it as I type.

I won't be testing out Windows 8 for anything. I've been bleeding edge for years. Now however, I find I need iron tablets and a lot of damn fine reasoning other than a nifty interface that sucks if it ain't touchscreen activated so therefore I will not download, install it or even bother with it. It seems to me at this moment, a new Windows Millenium.

I did find one rather informative session on Twit.tv about the new v8 of Windows. It is rather lengthy to watch the whole thing, but was a look at the new OS from unbiased eyes. I did learn a bit more about the why of the changes and what may motivate some people to like the new OS. I'm still not a fan yet myself, but I also realize that I would really have to use it a lot more to see what it has to offer. http://twit.tv/show/windows-weekly/250 Thank-you AB for the BR!
