Um yes and the challenge is show what you can do. I would assume it would be enjoyable to someone to show their stable overclocking work to others and get some recognition for their efforts. If this doesn't interest you, then why even post in the thread?

But you had enough time to come be a douche on this thread? The first post clearly stated what the goal/benefit of submitting your information would be.  If you don't want to do it or can't understand why others are......then just don't.

Re:X58 Stability Club 4.2Ghz+ Can you make it? 2011/08/12 15:23:11 (permalink)

How is everybody this week anyway? I hope better than the last post I just read...what is THAT all about? Speaking of time, I finally had time last night to qualify my PC No.2, the 2nd of the 3 I constructed here in my studio. Built this one in Oct/Nov of 2009, and it's been down for the count the past two weeks with a PSU malady (Corsair replaced the HX750W with an HX850W, a nice thing), and disappearing and/or non-functional Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz RAM.

I've just been too busy myself to put everything together until last night, so now it's got a new PSU, re-wired the whole insides of it, and new RAM, some G. Skill PI 1600Mhz RAM that o'clocks to beat the band! Anytime you get 1600Mhz RAM that is good to 1750+Mhz in LinX and FAHome both, PRIME95 also, then it's a winner to my eyes.

This is this thread's debut for this CPU, it's never been listed here yet, so here you go in all its Core i7 920 goodness...I ramped it up a bit just to see how far I could clock it on AIR ONLY with the new LinX in the house, and you know it was willing all the way up to 4.6Ghz, but no way to cool it up there! So I settled on the next best number that I could cool the CPU adequately (just barely so) and scored a 4377Mhz in BIOS/4357Mhz in the Windows GUI/ELEET, CPU-Z, et al. I can't make it do any better so that's all she wrote folks...lowest VCore that it would work in also...1.32500 VCore.

rexrzer77
Core i7 920 - Batch# 3849B202
CPU Clocked at;: 4.35Ghz
Voltage 1.325
Idle Temps: 41, 44, 42, 44
Load Temps: 91, 93, 99, 96
GFlops Peak: 55.39

For Mr. KRAM's benefit with respect to posting this CPU, it is a brand new CPU that I've never posted before here. PC's I have here now: PC No.1 (970-based); PC No.3 (Core i7 920 Batch#3849B056); and now PC No.2 here today. That's three (3) different PC's, not one with different CPU's in it, thanks!

Wow, rexrzer77, 99*C!
That's really pushing it. I prob could've made 4.4 had I accepted temps like that. Lately I have been going to 93 W/my new 960.
But wow, you got those temps at 1.35Vcore? Must not have been a great cooler, or high ambient.
Well, no matter, that's a good respectable OC.

Main (gaming) rig: i7-3930K; Asus Rampage IV Extreme; H100 W/p-p Excaliburs, AS5; MSI 7870 2GD5/OC; Crucial M4 SSD 256GB.
See my primary ModsRigs: Adam for the rest, and I have a second (wife's) rig Asus Rampage III Extreme & 960: Eve.

Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable.

Well, no matter, that's a good respectable OC.

It was a little toasty in here last night, but no, not too bad...about 81-degrees F with the windows
open but 3 PC's, a MacBook Pro, and a bunch of peripheral hardware going 100%. I don't specifically "cool the room" when o'clocking as a rule, so I get what I get! The VCore was 1.32500V not 1.35V as written in the screenshot. As for the cooler, it is a standard fare Mega Shadow, CPU lapped, lapped cooler, also.

As for "accepting temps like that"...with a 920 CPU you cannot hurt them, I've proven that over and over again...the one in this PC No.2 has been online doing FAHome and other tasks for 2.3 years 24/7 and counting, minus the last two weeks down for repairs on the PSU--and the memory died too! Hah! I look at it this way, as long as the GFLops and the time to Mhz per iteration is good, I'll let it ride up to 97-98 degrees on one Core in Real Temp. Real Temp is a bit of a negative influence in my book, strange to write that but after years of doing this o'clocking bizness it is consistently 2-5 degrees "warmer" per Core than all the other utilities I use: AIDA64; ELEET and CPU-Z; HWMonitor...all of them, interesting...?

The 99 degrees was Core No.2 in this PC, which is always "hot" vs the others, and that was for a brief, brief second or two, two or three times during that run of LinX, not consistently 99-degrees. I'd never have let it complete said run if 99 degrees was pegged the whole run-- it wasn't like that at all. Two Cores below 95 degrees, and two slightly higher than 95 degrees=I let it go, but certainly NO HIGHER!  If anything I'll say I was pushing it a bunch with this CPU, but then again I've been there before with it. Nothing for the faint of heart for sure, but this CPU and cooler have been such good friends for that 2.3 years+ that I sort of "trust them" to do their mischief when an overclocking run is at hand.

Since it's been fixed with the new PSU and RAM from G. Skill Company (great RAM...clocks to the moon!) the CPU is back at FAHome as of last evening post break-in test, this test in fact. Today it is operating @ 4252Mhz, and Core temps are 70, 72,70, 71 which is more than acceptable, VCore is 1.28750V, which is aok fine for the speed and temps. This CPU IS one of the original low-voltage CPU's out of Costa Rica in April-May 2009, in fact all the 920's are from those batches, so it strangely does o'clock quite well at minimal voltages.

I could, perhaps, re-do my TIM on the CPU at this point, but was just too tired last night after a hard day at work, then 2 computer rebuilds, finally got to testing both rigs at about midnight, go figure! I am going to try the new EVGA Frostbite for the next build I do or if I re-do my present CPU mounts the same...I've heard good things about it, and got a tube from newegg last week. Presently the TIM on all my CPU's is MX-4 or MX-2, depending on the build time. I don't think it would make a 2-3 degree temp difference however, just more peace of mind as my TIM is at least a year old on all of them, everything but my laptop, Hah!

That's the story...thanks for the concern Mr. Halloweenweed, but it was all under control and I thought about it long, and hard regarding pulling the run but no, I let it GetRDone because even at those temps it was hummin' along with time-perfect iterations and good GFlops also=Go! There was ZERO throttling going on because I had engaged ThrottleStop, in any case...higher than 100-degrees it allows it/CPU will do it anyway involuntarily, but less than that and the utility thinks that it is aok fine and forward we go!

There are so many reasons why you could be getting an error. Usually it comes down to lack of needed voltage or memory timings...but there's no way of really telling until you play the "guessing game". Probably would be helpful to create a thread and post the bios template

Offhand I would guess, blindly so, that your rig lacks memory bandwidth to go to 4.37Ghz without some major BIOS tweaking of the RAM and other settings, which is one of my specialties in fact...I have been running 12GB of G.Skill 1600Mhz PI Memory (xlnt overclocking RAM) for a couple years up to 1688Mhz in the Windows GUI with all 12GB on board, but there are *THINGS* one must do in BIOS to accommodate both the 12GB size and the overclock of said RAM also. If you have the new low voltage (1.5V) G.Skill RAM it is a very different ball game to play in, but still things can be accomplished there as well as with traditional 1.65V RAM.

I do agree with the other poster that it would be very wise of you to create a thread in the main X58 Motherboard pages, the mainstream so many people will get a chance to read the post, and attend to posting your *complete* BIOS settings, from A to Z. There's a special post here at the EVGA Forums FAQ's as I recall, about that topic, and once you find it you will see how easy it is to do...that's a MUST DO for the Forum regulars to get wind of your issue(s) with the board, settings, BIOS, and the RAM also...all of that!

You have what seems to be a steep learning curve about to hit you square in the headroom, but that's to be expected. When you play with toys, it pays to know the game, right? Same thing for overclocking RAM and motherboards, and video cards, and CPU's to make it even more complex. It's a weird science per se, but you'll get the hang of it after awhile and you'll thank us for educating you about all the intricacies of the overclocking game, and how to come out a winner instead of wondering "Why?"

Muchos Gracias, Amigo!

Thanks, and that about wraps it up for my PC's to post in your cool, KUHL thread!

I think it's a testament to a great idea (this forum and particularly this thread) that
today this thread and the Forum here at EVGA.com is at least as popular as it was, say three years
ago when the economy was better off, people had more ca$h to spend on electronics of all types,
and there was a generally more positive attitude circulating in the USA and Western Nations.

Keep it going strong Mr. Kram36, the enterprise in your thread is a winner, bar none!

so i'm having issues getting it passed the 2nd pass. can i uncheck off 'stop on errors' without it hurting me? i really don't want to turn that off.

Probably not allowed because that is do to instability. Which this thread is about. Stability. Start a new thread with a BIOS template (Can be found in X58 Stickies). One of us should be able to help you.

+1
I would reset the bios back to stock and go in have another computer open to the boards. I started small from stock and it took me several day's of tweeking to get mine stable @ 4.21 ghz. Not everyone's the same that is what makes this chalange so much fun at least for me. GL man

Is it ok to post an update or should I edit my last post?  I tweaked my voltages a little and have a new run with higher gflops.

Now that I finally made it to 4.2ghz I tried to further tweak my voltages down and find the sweet spot for gflops at this clock speed.  Dropped 75mv vtt and have much more consistent gflops.
