VAC is proprietary Valve software primarily used in games developed by Valve (HL2, TF2, L4D)

Have you tried going to PB's site and getting their updater?

    http://evenbalance.org/index.php?page=support.php

Go there and download "PBSETUP" and run that. I haven't ran it in a while but If I remember correctly it should detect the games youve got installed and update the PB client for those games.

    Hope that helps.

I dunno. I've never had problems with PB that I couldn't solve and in most cases IIRC, this updater was the cure.

Give it a shot, It will probably solve your frustrations. Then you'll forget all about it Hopefully, it works.

I'm with you...Not a fan of PB but I'm not sure what you mean by no cheaters with Black Ops and VAC.  There are hacks all over the place.  Just days ago I was on and a player was using a powerful LMG and wall hack.  Had like 59/3 kill death ratio.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Nothing worse then deciding I want to get a few games of BF2 in only to be met with kick after kick. I have downloaded and tried a few things have are supposed to test the service and reinstall them if there is a problem, but nothing seems to work.

Besides PnkBstrB.exe using 30-40% CPU ever since the last update, and no straight answers from their support, I haven't had issues with them really. Sometimes I've had lost packets that got me kicked, but that doesn't happen very often.

Anyway, the worst thing about them is how unprofessional the whole setup looks, like the 'update finished' window content doesn't the window, the way it updates, and the windows 98 website they have :P

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.

I get kicked by Punkbuster in BFBC2 for the same thing. If they're going to force us to use something then they should at least make it work correctly.

    Re:I HATE PUNKBUSTER 2011/06/07 12:18:13 (permalink)
If your losing PB packets...  then your probably not running correctly and have an issue somewhere.

This can be due to many problems. Low framerates, using a shared connection, using wireless, laggy game server, ISP problems, running of other background programs that mod your Net Stack or use p2p (Xfire, some Steam clients, Skype)... Etc.

Ive only seen a PB kick for lost packets once since release.
If your seeing it all the time or regularly -and- on different servers, then its time to look closely at your system and connection for the problem... its yours, not Punkbusters

The number one cause of this issue, is failing to launch the .EXE correctly.

Launching the game correctly (and thus giving all sub programs the correct Admin rights) means that I have -never- had to update or do anything with Punkbuster since BFBC2 was released.

The game will "run" when launched incorrectly, and you can play online... but many sub programs will not be given the correct Admin rights, thus Punkbuster and other "internal" background features of the game will be broken, work incorrectly, fail or start eating CPU cycles... like being unable to see the real-time RT pings (in-game) of other players for instance, or having the PB service go over 0-1% CPU use...

    Re:I HATE PUNKBUSTER 2011/06/07 14:03:59 (permalink)
    Try reading this ....

Since the new components have been installed, I now get kicked from PunkBuster servers for "handshaking failed" or "Losing Key Packets", how can I fix that?

Some other software programs such as virus scanners, firewalls and Internet security software packages are suspicious of any new services and kernel drivers when they are first released. Some of these will block our new components thereby causing the "Losing Key Packets" kicking. Until these various packages are updated to correctly identify PnkBstrA.exe, PnkBstrB.exe, and PnkBstrK.sys as components of the PunkBuster Anti-Cheat System, players who experience PunkBuster kicks due to these conflicts need to either manually adjust the settings of the other software running on their system or disable the other software while playing on PunkBuster enabled servers. The new PunkBuster components make use of network resources and also frequently update files in the Windows system folders. This activity triggers warnings or blocks by some other security programs, some of which consider all unknown programs as threats or malware. Our new components are simply extensions of the existing PunkBuster system using new services and kernel software drivers, and are each signed with Verisign / Authenticode digital signatures for verifiable authenticity purposes. Most major security packages do not block our new components; users with other software that causes these conflicts should contact the vendor of their security package and request an update to correct this conflict.

Then you are launching incorrectly, as the game installers executive .exe is -not- installed as a "desktop" icon.

    -->to launch the game properly:
    Go to START
    Open the GAMES "folder"
"Right Click" on the BFBC2 icon in the games folder list
    Click on "Run as Admin"

This is how the game was designed to launch -with all features- properly

thanks for the in depth instruction but all ya really needed to say was launch from the start menu..lol, but  I tried what you said there and found that at first it did not use any cpu cycles. but then it did come back up to 13% or so. my issue my or may not be pb  I am not getting kicked by pb just a hard system lock up with screaming audio. not really relating to this topic.

It doesn't matter which way you run an executable as administrator, whether it's from a shortcut, directly, ctrl+shift clicking, or doing it through the compatibility tab.
The recent problem with it using a lot of CPU since around the 15th of last month is a problem for lots of people, even some who've tried all the standard things, and then some, and have even tried reinstalling windows altogether.
So it's been almost a month and no word about it from evenbalance...
