This guide is to show you how to slipstream certain drivers into your Windows XP installation,
such as RAID, SATA, or to speed up the installation and customize the installation to your needs.

For this example, we will be going over how to do so for
EVGA motherboards, if you're still running on Windows XP.

We will be using the program nLite, the easiest to use slipstream program for XP.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:
  • A Windows XP installation disc (SP2 or later)
  • .NET Framework 2.0 or higher installed (latest recommended)
  • Download nLite here. Do NOT install it yet.
  • Create a folder on your desktop called anything you want (i.e. "XP Custom")

Part 1 - Drivers

Let's start by getting the drivers we need for your EVGA motherboard:
1.     Go to the EVGA Drivers page, here.
2.     Download the Chipset, Networking, and Audio driver packages for your motherboard onto your desktop.  For this example, we will be using the EVGA X58.

3.     First, select Mainboards.

4. Then, select "EVGA X58 Series"

5.     Now you can select and download all three driver packages.
6.     If you need RAID drivers, you can find them here.

Part 2 - Preparation

  1. Insert your XP installation disc while you are in Windows, and go to "My Computer"
  2. Right-click on the CD, and then click on "Explore"
  3. Copy all of the contents of the CD, and Paste them into your custom folder on the desktop
  4. Double click on the nLite installation file that you have downloaded (nlite.exe) This will bring up the window below.  Select the language you want this installation to be in.

5.     Click on next, and that will take you to a page where you still be telling nLite where your Custom Folder is, where you extracted the contents of your XP CD.  If you followed the example, this folder should be on your desktop (i.e. "XP Custom")

6.     Click on next, and that will take you to a page where you can see your previous nLite sessions.  If this is your first time, you may skip this part and click "Next".  (see below)

7.     In the next menu, you will choose all the options you would like to go through in the nLite installation process.  You may explore everything else in your own time, but for this example, we will only be running the following tasks:
  • Hotfixes and Update Packs
  • Integrate Drivers
  • Create a Bootable ISO

(note:  The "Integrate a Service Pack" option is not highlighted because this example is using a
Windows XP disc that already has Service Pack 2 on it)

Part 3 - Integration

1.     Click Next, and you should see the page "Hotfixes and Update Packs".  This is where you can slipstream Windows updates or patches into your installation.  Please keep in mind that this example is already using a Windows XP disc that already has Service Pack 2 on it. Update packs are available out there to add (post-SP2), such as this one:
2.     Once downloaded, click on the "Insert" button to include this Update Pack, for example. Once your done adding what you want, click Next. (see below)

3.     Now it's time to add the drivers for your motherboard.  This is the same idea as the "Hotfixes" menu.  Click on "Insert" to find the EVGA Drivers you have downloaded on your desktop.
  • If your drivers came in separate downloads (like the X58), make sure to include ALL of them
  • This is where you will be integrating your motherboards RAID drivers.

Part 4 - Finishing Up

1.     After you are done with the selected tasks, you will get a prompt to start compiling all of these files into a final installation folder (i.e. "XP Custom"), where a CD can then be made.

2.     Click Next, and nLite will run its magic.  This might take a bit. When it's finished, you will be prompted to click Next again.

3.     Now nLite will ask you to insert a CD or DVD to create a bootable Windows installation disc that has your tweaks.  Insert a disc into your drive, and start the burn process. (see below)

4.     Once the disc is done, you are finished!  You should now be able to boot off of this customized Windows XP disc, including all the necessary updates, drivers for your motherboard, and other tweaks you may have added.

Thanks for reading.

You can also use nlite to remove items that you don't need, like support for legacy video drivers such as the Intel Indeo.  I stripped down an installer to 187 MB before.  That's probably as low as you can get and still remain usable.

Has anyone tried doing this on a system that's using windows 7?

I tried slipstreaming all the drivers and what not, and kept getting all sorts of errors.  (Trying to make an XP with RAID driver).

    newest Directx
    .Net Framework
    C++
    Registry edits and settings
    themes
    windows 7
    wmp11

Theres also a better way to slipstream driver inwhich ive done video card, sound, motherboard, and any other driver i want.
YOU CAN SLIPSTEAM ANYTHING IF YOU KNOW HOW

    Re:Part 2 2010/03/23 21:42:02 (permalink)
In regards to a couple pms this is the best technique to successfully slipstream drivers:
(Using this method instead of the Nlite method allows you to slipstream any drivers, easilly update new drivers into the slipstream in the future and the drivers will be autodetected during install so they are only installed if needed avoiding a bunch of unused drivers being installed. This can also be used in windows 7 and Vista that ive found but theres a few changes)

-Create a folder on the desktop called Windows XP slipstream

-Put your XP installation cd in the cd rom drive

-Go into My Computer and right click your cd rom drive and choose open

-A window will open showing all the content of the cd.Copy all the content to the Windows XP slipstream folder you created on the desktop

-You should now have a folder on the desktop called Windows XP slipstream and inside should be the content of the XP installation cd( i386,VALUEADD,SUPPORT,DOCS,etc. )

-Create a folder called $OEM$ in this same folder which means $OEM$ will be in the same folder as i386,VALUEADD,SUPPORT,DOCS,etc.

-Inside the $OEM$ folder create a folder called $1

-Inside the $1 folder create a folder called Drivers
-Now you have the directory tree Windows XP slipstream\$OEM$\$1\drivers

    -
In the drivers folder you created place a folder for each driver you want to be slipstreamed and give the folder a one letter name (for example: video card will be V) "The one letter only rule is due to a character limit that is givin for this entry for who knows what reason"

    -
Put the contents of the driver in the folder to which letter you assigned. You must put the extracted form of the driver which is generally a bunch of files.(for example: an Nvidia video cards files would be located in C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\version\WinXP\English\)
You would copy all the contents of the English folder to the V folder or whatever letter you gave it.
You should know if its the correct files cause there will generally be an .inf file in the bunch which is what the installer uses to install the driver.

-When you have all your drivers put in the coordinating folders now you need to edit winnt.sif ,open it  with notepad.
-The winnt.sif file is located in your i386 directory on the slipstream.
-What is important in this file is the OemPnPDriversPath entry.
Here is what mine looks like:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can probably see the pattern and what you need to do:
    Heres mine:
    OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\V;Drivers\E;Drivers\S;Drivers\H;Drivers\B"

-Notice Drivers\V is my video card driver folder,Drivers\E is my ethernet driver,Drivers\S is my sound  driver, and Drivers\B is my board.
         -Every driver entered should be seperated by a ;

-If I wanted to add another driver for my raid drivers i could
         -make a folder named R in $OEM$\$1\drivers\
-then add ;Drivers\R at the end of the OemPnPDriversPath entry in the WINNT.SIF file
           Now it will look like:
           OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\V;Drivers\E;Drivers\S;Drivers\H;Drivers\B;Drivers\R"

-Save the WINNT.SIF file after you edit it and your ready to burn the CD and you can use Nlite to burn it

Stealthe what you just said is way over my head in regards to making  "directory tree in the root of the xp slipstream folder". I know about hardware, but software and coding are like a mystery to me.

Wherever your folder is that has all the content of your xp slipstream.

The root means the first folder. So if you copied the content of your install cd to a newly created folder

I edited the steps in my prior post to make it more understandable

There is no WINNT.SIF file in the i386 folder. The only .sif file I saw was TEXTSETUP.sif.

Is it somewhere else or is there another file that needs to be modified?
