Hey guys,
So im thinking of jumping on the x79 train. I know i dont need the extra power but my 2500k is boring me LOL.. I have come to appreciate EVGA products very much (have 2 670's) and I really want to try there mobo out. I do however have a few quesitons. First the board im looking at is the evga x79 sli, at the egg its like $219. this is a crazy deal,  why is it so cheap and why are there only 3 reviews on it (and not good too boot)? Also does the pcie 3.0 bug apply to the sli board as it does to the ftw and classified? can any of you guys vouch for its quality and overclocking ability? Im thinking of pairing it with a intel i7 3820.
thanks guys

Your 2500 is more than good enough and I see no reason to change unless you run memory bandwidth intensive applications and/or graphics.

You will probably find several forum members who would recommend a different manufacturer but since the last BIOs update my system has been running quite smoothly and my USB 3.0 has also been fine.

Love my SLI - and that is a Crazy Good Deal - Heck you can even find the 3820 for $230 at a Microcenter.  Those two items make this the best Bang For The Buck solution I've seen in quite some time.  There is just an overall build quality that goes along with Socket 2011 vs 1155.  I can't say it'll be faster then what you have, but once you hold it in your hands you're sold...

and steak, how is the pci-e3.0 running for you? I have heard that some evga boards were having some issues. I do realize that Nvidia dosnt support 3.0 offically but even with the patch it seems like some issues. Is yours running in 3.0 ok?
    thanks guys

I'm running GTX 480's in SLI so I have no need in PCI-E 3.0 (running 2.0) - Based on what I have seen (which is admittedly limited) that is only a concern when you hit QUAD SLI on 600 Series cards.  I.E. Surround/Eyefinity Setups Maybe

Actually the problem has been that with a number of boards running the Nvidia driver patch for PCIE-3.0 only certain slots will register 3.0.  This is one of many issues with my Classy.  Slot 1 reports 3.0 while slot 2 reports 2.0.     This is the EVGA specific problem that you are hearing about with PCI-Express.

I'm running a P67FTW 580 sli and switching to X79 initially. Then moving over to 685's hopefully. In both cases I want to run on 40 lanes of PCIe, not 20.

haha wow. lol Well I would asume they have, I havnt heard anthing about that. the article stated it happend in dec of 2011. I guess the only good thing to that is at least a person knows for sure whats going on with the mobo (burns out !!!). It seems from what I have been reading that unfortunaly even Evga dosnt have a handle on some of the issues plaguing there x79 boards. Not that having a mobo burn out is ok either.

There was an initial Bios problem with the X79 UD3 (Had one right after release) and it was fixed within 2 weeks or so.  That UD3 is a record breaker and an incredible board.  You will enjoy it imho.

Was it a Bios issue or Hardware issue Johnny?  I thought they had used poor quality vrms?

Bios issue.  They released an updated BIOS for people right after this happened but provided unconditional returns or swap-outs (at their expense) to people who didn't feel comfortable flashing.  I flashed and had no more problems but decided I wanted a board with a some different options and returned mine.

My take:  UD3 is still considered a budget board even by X79 standards.  Too much juice via software for the design and VRMs.

On my Classified, I've got my EVGA GTX 680's in slots 1 and 4, as that's what it labels as the PCIe x16 slots.  I have done the registry hack and then gone into the BIOS and set them at GEN 3, and after several attempts I can get it to boot, but even with everything set at default speeds, it's unstable and runs games and benchmarks at snail-like speeds!

This is an RMA board after I had issues with my original one, and even after doing the update for the software and the firmware, the USB 3.0 ports that I thought were working well, now are, again, a hit or miss proposition.  Sometimes they work, most times they don't.  I'm back to running a USB 2.0 hub to have enough ports to plug everything into.

I don't know if it's worth asking EVGA if they can do anything about it..., or if I should just write off this $450 board, and buy something else.

I've been looking at replacing my 28 inch monitors with a couple of 30", high-resolution ones..., but without being able to take full advantage of the PCIe 3.0 bandwidth, I think it would be a waste of money if I cannot get my Classified board to work.

I know they say they don't officially support PCIe 3.0, but the original literature inidicated that the X79 chipset would support it as well as USB 3.0, and the board I've got just doesn't cut it!  I've been very happy with everything I've gotten from EVGA over the last few years, but I sure wish someone would just let me, and others as well, know if there is is ever going to be a chance that they are going to come up with a solution!

I'm pretty displeased right now about having spent over $3000 for what is basically just a web-surfing machine.  I could do that on a $279 special from Walmart!

yeah its stuff like what your going through is what has made me unfortunatley decied on a diffrent vedor. I love  EVGA but there x79 lineup has to many problems.  Not to toot my own horn but my Asus board has performed pefectly since I bought it. While I know that asus and other manufactures dont have near the customer support like EVGA.  They do seem to have got there x79 mobo running much better out of the box then evga.  I guess to me I would rather have a board that works out of the gate then having to wait over 6 months to have issues resolved (or that may never be resolved), and take my chances with the other (asus,gigabyte..ect.)  boards customer service.

I really wanted that evga x79 sli though.....rrrrr..

EVGA graphics cards are still the bomb though ;)
    thanks guys.
