#1: If it is just the noise at higher speeds which bother you, yes. But keep in mind that there is a minimum fan speed threshold and that custom fan profiles won't make the fans any quieter at idle if the minimum fan speed is too loud for your taste. Using a custom BIOS and voiding your warranty by doing so may allow you to lower the minimum depending on hardware limitations.
#2: From the review you linked to:
Today, we're reviewing the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SuperClocked ACX, a non-reference design, factory-overclocked GTX 970 graphics card with a custom-design PCB and the company's signature ACX cooler, which features an aluminum heatsink with a trio of copper heat pipes that draw heat directly from the GPU die, dissipating it with the airflow the two 80 mm fans produce.
I realize that. I was having difficulty wording the sentence and did a poor job. EVGA has released so many versions of the card it is ridiculous.
We have a regular 970 with what I am assuming is a reference PCB
then we have a 970 with the old ACX 1.0 cooler with what looks like a custom PCB
and finally we have a 970 with a new ACX 2.0 with a custom PCB
If I wanted to get waterblocks, I need to make sure I am getting the correct one. I would like to keep with reference, as this is what waterblock companies tend to make for.
