What is the NVIDIA Control Panel - System Information showing you?
Is the Motherboard set to Auto or are you setting it to Gen 3?
Is the card installed in the X16 PCIe Slot the one next to the CPU?

What CPU are you using? Not an Engineering Sample, but retail right?

I know that the older 3XXX series were PCIE Gen2 only, but Z97 boards are for 4XXX series right?

That should support PCIE 3.0. Have you flashed the latest BIOS for your board? That might help.

You do have the card installed into one of the red pci-e slots correct? The black slot is limited to pci-e 2.0.

yes it is in the top most slot the 1st and 2nd slots are red the bottom 3rd one is black. I ran a sli setup yesterday( as a test) for a little while then took out the 2nd card but I don't think that I would have caused any problems also I am on windows8.1 using gpu driver driver 355.98 I have not had any reason to upgrade it but I don't think that I would cause a problem. It is after midnight here so I got to get offline but I will check back tomorrow THANKYOU guys for trying to help me out

Take the current card out and try the 2nd card by itself in the top red pci-e slot. Does the 2nd card also run at pci-e 2.0? Wouldn't hurt to try 2nd card in the 2nd red pci-e slot as well.

If you are over clocking the CPU using AI it has a tendency to down grade the PCIE to 2.0

EVGA X79Dark (bios 2.13) paired with i7-4960X,
32 gigs of Corsair Vengeance 1866 C10 ram,
2 EVGA GTX 980ti Hydro Copper’s, Corsair AX1200i power supply and XSPC Ray Storm D5 RX480 V3 Water Cooling Kit, 2 512 gigs OCZ Vector’s
SSD’s in raid 10. Windows 10 pro
