best known compatible gpu for the older 780i mobo?

Im trying to find out the best GPU for the older 780i evga motherboard. 9xx series from nvidia do not work, are not compatible. I know 560ti's are. I believe but im not certain is the problem. The 700 series is the best compatible card for the 780.
 
Does anyone know for certain? Does the 700 cards not give double beeps on post?

    I can remember running 6 series cards on one. I know 680hc cards work.

    I know the 700 series will work but you may be creating a cpu bottleneck , a high end 580/680 would be more than adequate imo.
