Hye guys, totally new to overclocking and stuff and i have a few question i was wondering if the community could help me answer thanks.
1. For the general overclocker, what settings should i change to get a decent overclock and what settings are reserved for advance overclockers
2.  Is there a guide?
3. Should CPU VOLTAGE be set to manual, adaptive, or auto?
4. What is offset voltage and should i leave that at 0?
5. Is there a safety feature on Z97 FTW BIOS, it seems i cannot overclock past 4.5 ghz or else i get bsod upon login to windows ?

Thanks i have more question but ill see when to ask depending on how these few are answered.

Just set the core speed to whatever you are trying to achieve. Then set voltage to adaptive. Boot into Windows and see if it's stable. If will not boot or is not stable than lower the core speed until you get it to run. Once you have a stable machine running Windows then run a bench mark or stress test. When it passes you should be good to go! One more thing make sure power setting in Windows is performance.

So if at 1.28 voltage and the bios shows my current cpu multiplier as 100x4.6 but shows only 3.7 ghz does that mean the cpu has already reached a max and 4.6 ghz isnt possible with this chip?

Leave the voltage set to adaptive do not change anything else. The adaptive mode will adapt to the voltage the speed of the processor. When you set high performance in power options your multiplier will stay at 4.6 ghz. When you leave it set to balanced in power options the cpu speed will fluctuate.

Gotcha, However its wierd, with a adaptive voltage the bios reverts back to default settings and wont let me boot into windows, currently using 4.4ghz at auto voltage, it auto voltage at high performance to 1.237 V

Here I found this guide from EVGA_Jacob,
Here is a quick overclocking guide for the EVGA X99 motherboards! Overclocking these boards are similar to Z97, so if you are familiar there, you should be familiar here  Regardless, here is a really quick/easy guide for basic overclocking on EVGA X99.   Hardware used: EVGA X99 Classified Intel 5820K CPU DDR4 2133MHz   1. Press delete to enter the system BIOS when system boots.   2. Main screen will be the Overclock section, scroll down to the CPU Multiplier Control section you can use the mouse or keyboard to navigate here. Change CPU Multiplier Control to Manual.   3. Set a CPU Multiplier setting, for this demo we used 42. Remember that BCLOCK x Multiplier = CPU clock, so this means we are running 4200MHz.   4. When overclocking your CPU, you may need a higher voltage to achieve stability. To do this navigate to the CPU Voltage Mode section and change the Voltage Mode from Auto to Override or Adaptive. The differences are as follows:      a. Override mode will force the CPU voltage to run at set voltage during all scenarios, even when system is idle. This will keep the voltage locked but may run the system at a higher temperature during idle.      b. Adaptive mode will set a voltage OFFSET from the current running voltage. Example: If CPU voltage is 1.050V, setting +50mV will run CPU at 1.100v   5. Head to the Memory section to set your memory frequency, you can enable XMP if your memory supports it, this will automatically enable the correct frequency and timings   6. Save and Exit the BIOS and Boot into Windows to stress test your overclock. Don’t forget to watch your CPU Temperatures! Hint: If you want the CPU clocks to stay at full performance mode without dropping while in Windows, change your Windows Power Options to “High Performance” mode:   And with that this is the basics of overclocking on EVGA X99! Of course things can get a lot more advanced if you are doing more aggressive overclocking, where additional voltages to various controllers or better cooling may be needed!

I got my 4790K up to 4.6 @ 1.25 volts on water. Temps about 28C at idle. All processors are different some will go higher than others. I have not tried to go any higher but I know it will with no problem. I am glad to see you got everything stable! I am currently looking for a new video card. That should speed things up a lot.

Mine gives up stability around 4.65 at 1.25v.  My temps at 1.25v were at 30C idle and 62C under 100% load.  I don't foresee any problem with running at 1.3v for a 10C increase.  The highest a core has hit was 72C 2 days ago when my room ambient temp was over 80F. These are normal operating temps on the stock cooler at stock clocks anyways.  I'd recommend the 980 if you can afford it and plan to run 1440p or higher.  I actually had 970s sli, but regretted it due to the lack of SLI support for most of games i play.  Thankfully the Nvidia debacle opened up a window of opportunity to get a full refund 4 months after I got them so I went with it and grabbed the 980 ftw and a 500gb SSD for the same price.  Best thing I ever did.  The stutter/hitching i was experiencing with the 970s during game play is gone and i'm getting the same performance without those issues.

I couldn't get above 4.6 with my 4790k on water.  I'm using the adaptive voltage and the voltage is solid at 1.199v.    Idle temps are 29c with a 79f ambient temp.

    EVGA Z97 FTW.  i7-4790K, G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3-2400 x 16gb (2 x 8gb), EVGA GTX970 SC 4GB (EK Full Cover Blocks with parallel bridge) (SLI), EVGA Supernova 1200w,  Feser X-Changer 120.3 radiator x 2, Swiftech MCP355 w/xspc res top x 2, Heatkiller 3.0 (CPU).

Switched over to adaptive +50 and i'm stable at 4800mhz now :)  Dropped my Idle down to 34  And my max temp during stress was 75.  Happy camper!

How did it go?  After 7 hours of gaming straight I got a BSOD and went back to 4.7.   It seems very happy there.

Sorry I forgot to post. I got a new GTX 780 ti KingPin what a huge difference. I set it to 4.8 with +100 mv voltage. Benched marked and play Battlefield 4 (105 to 149 FPS) for four days. No Problems, I know it will go higher.
