With the release of the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD, does the Z170 support booting from NVMe drives? Looked at the specs and didn't find reference of it. Didn't see any reference in the forum regarding this.

I installed windows 10 onto an Intel 750 successfully as a UEFI boot. I used the default MS driver and then loaded the Intel driver after the install. I believe the new Samsung will be the same.

hmm... so i have this new shiny Samsung 950 pro i want to install on my z170 ftw board. i enabled m.2 support in the bios, then installed the drive.

i just get a blinking cursor after that when booting the machine. i cant even hit delete to enter the bios.

am i missing something here? newest EVGA board isn't compatible with a M.2 drive?

What bios version are you running? What speed is your Ram set to (3000 is currently not very lucky)?

i just called evga tech support. apparently its a compatibility issue. ill try setting the BIOS to factory, enableing m.2 though.

    -restored optimized defaults
    -rebooted
    -re-enabled m.2
-set ram speed to auto (2133 MHz)
    -rebooted
    -installed 950 pro
-same blinking cursor issue (cant get into bios while the drive is installed either) post code is sitting at "A1"

just for the hell of it, i went back in and switched sata mode over to legacy after the above failed on AHCI. had no impact.

are setting storage to UEFI in bios?
Do you have anything else installed? I know on the classified, if you use the m.2 socket - it cuts off usage of sata ..so maybe m.2 is being disabled somehow?

Yes uefi is on. I have data drives connected but they don't occupy the connectors that get disabled (the two furthest from the cpu)

Re: Z170 boot from NVMe drive? 2015/11/04 08:04:50 (permalink)
I didn't. After enabling m.2 support, I install the drive. While it's installed I see the MB title screen, then the next screen has a blinking cursor that you would typically see if no disk was detected. Post code sits at A1 indefinitely while on this screen.

Trouble is, I can't get into bios while the drive is installed to verify that the drive is showing up. The delete key does nothing when this drive is present. I thought maybe the keyboard wasn't working in that configuration. I even tried a different keyboard in USB 2 and 3 ports. This behavior makes me believe it's a comparability issue with the mobo, and not a faulty ssd from samsung

Sorry, misunderstood your question. I had previously installed windows to a sata drive to get my licence upgraded to 10. That necessitated a bios upgrade to 1.05 since I needed to install Windows 7 first. Regardless, this shouldn't impact the Samsung 950 pro I'm trying to install now. I did turn off the windows 7 support already

The classified has two types of m.2 sockets ..one can only be used for a wifi type card. Are you sure your ftw board has the storage m.2 type?

To TKMoney: This was the reason I posted this question to begin with. I have the Z170 Classified and the spec sheet states M.2 support up to 36gbps which indicates a M.2 drive with NVMe, but support for NVMe is not specifically stated. I am also interested in the Samsung 950 M.2 drive but didn't want to spend the money if it isn't supported. Hopefully EVGA support will come back with something that helps you out.

I am currently using the ftw version of evga's z170 board. It claims it can support an m-keyed m.2

I assumed this meant that an m.2 storage drive supporting NVMe would be compatible. I can confirm that the drive does phisically fit in the m-key slot just fine.

It would be really disappointing if this wasn't the case. The entire reason I didn't get the stinger board was because this one had m.2 m-key support. I would hate to go through the hastle of doing a complete rebuild on a different MB just because of this issue. I sure wish we could get through to one of their engineers who might actually know whether or not the board is even capable of this configuration.

All the tech support staff was able to tell me was that the development team had been notified. In the meantime I have a $350.00 drive with a dwindleing return period. Bogus man....

I'd recommend staying in contact with EVGA support and keep the issue fresh. They have always been very good about working issues out with customers using EVGA products. I'll be watching this thread and see where it goes. Good luck.

Im installed Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD and is working as storage in windows 10.
    Run CrystalDiskMark 5.0.3  read speed 2599 write 1527 mb/s
I format drive in windows and make 400 GB partition for windows 7 and leave rest disk partition for install linux.
But when I start install windows 7 .. No drives were found ..I enabled windows 7 installation in bios and M.2 slot ..but Samsung 950 Pro is not recognised in bios .. but is recognised in windows.
Do I need to load some drivers for Samsung 950 Pro in bios during installation of windows 7? .. so then 950 Pro will be visible in bios?

Interesting... Could you tell me if you still have the windows 7 setting enabled? Also, are you able to get into the bios when the m.2 drive is connected?

I am assuming you are using the m.2 connection on the MB and not a pci extender?

Re: Z170 boot from NVMe drive? 2015/11/04 19:03:31 (permalink)
That may be the case for you. I'm not sure if windows 7 can read this drive during installation natively.

I just got my setup working. I now have a Samsung 950 pro running as my primary boot drive running Windows 10 on a z170 mb. I had to disable "CSM" in the Bios which I understand is a compatability tool for older technologies. Since my goal was to run win10. Disabling this wasn't a problem for me.

    My current config:
-M.2 support is enabled in the Bios
-UEFI is enabled for sata drives
-CSM is completely disabled (settings for this are at the bottom of the boot tab in the bios. Missed this initially)
-Windows 7 compatability option introduced in the 1.05 version of the bios is disabled.

You know the drive is recognised by the bios from a flashing led located just next to the m.2 - m key slot. There is no mention of the drive itself in the bios, it obviously wouldn't show up in the sata list because it's an m.2 connection. The windows 10 install media recognised the m.2 drive without issue.

I also noticed a significant speed increase in boot time once I disabled CSM!

Hope this helps somebody. Thanks for all the reply's. @jaaa1976 I was about to return the drive when I saw your comment. Gave me some needed hope. The driver windows 10 used for the m.2 drive is "NVMe Samsung SSD 950" provided by Microsoft. Version 10.0.10240.16384

Let me know if you think there is anything else I can contribute.

Well if you plan on upgrading to 10 you could just install Windows 7 to a spare drive, upgrade it to 10. Then pull your new key off the upgraded install with produkey. You can then use win 10 media to do a clean install from a USB like I did

Just looking through the bios. I didn't think it made sense that jaaa1917 could see the drive in windows when I couldn't even get into bios with it installed. Just did some research on CSM then switched it off once I realised it wasn't needed.

It should definitely be off by default on a skylake board in my opinion..

Re: Z170 boot from NVMe drive? 2015/11/05 06:48:27 (permalink)
Mine was pulled from windows update I believe. I'm not sure if its something that can be extracted from windows update or the 10 install media. I would try to install 8, then export the driver using a tool like driver magician. You could then specify it when installing 7. This in a bit of a long shot though since the driver is coming from a newer OS. I would try this if you can't find a download from ms or Samsung.

Also, I think there is one issue with the method I used to get this working with 10.

Originally I had a normal ssd running Windows. When I disabled CSM that drive stayed connected. Now I'm in a situation where the bios won't use the m.2 drive as a primary boot drive. I assume this is because there is no way to specify the m.2 drive in the boot order.

I think windows is compensating for this because I am asked which os I want to boot at startup because it thinks I want a dual boot setup.

So now I'm stuck in a situation where I need a different disk (sata) with an OS installed in order to bring about the dual boot selection that allows me to boot the windows install on the m.2.

Not ideal, but it works. I'll need to get a small USB drive to do this conveniently until evga addresses the issue with a new bios release. I'm not sure if I would have different results had the sata drive not been connected when installing windows from a USB drive. Might reinstall windows on the m.2 just to try it.

After a long week of desperation and anger I did the impossible..... Installed and booted Windows 7 x64 on Samsung SM951 NVMe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking and looking all over the internet for others who might have found a solution but nothing, am I the first who did it?

Installing and booting Windows 7 on this drive simply is impossible there is no driver, no workaround in BIOS settings.
With windows 8.1 or 10 however it works but I hate them so... for everyone else out there who want to stick with Windows 7 there is a solution but it's not simple.

You have to integrate a Microsoft hotfix in installation so you can boot Windows.
Unfortunatelly you can't do the same with setup. Instead and simpler is to use Windows 10 setup installation which is updated and contains NVMe driver. It works perfectly.

Keep in mind the native driver is not the best but it works, the SM951 is ultra fast anyway, hopefully when 950 pro is out it's drive will be compatible and better for faster speeds.
    What you need:
    Windows 7 SP1 x64.iso
    Windows 10.iso
    Microsoft hotfix    support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2990941
    NTlite     ntlite.com/download/
First request and download the hotfix, e-mail arrives instantly with a link.
    1. Download and install NTlite (or other similar you prefer)
    2. Extract the Windows 7.iso to a folder.
If you are installing in UEFI mode, check efi/boot there should be a bootx64.efi. If not grab it from a current installation of Windows 7 x64. C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi copy/paste and rename it to bootx64.efi.
    3. Using WinRAR or 7-zip extract the Microsoft hotfix.exe file.
    4. Run NTlite and open the iso folder.
You will see 2 folders your current windows and 2nd the iso folder open and choose the version you want to install, home, ultimate etc. and press load, or right click load. It takes sometime..

4.1 Go to updates and add package file. Add the extracted hotfix Windows6.1-KB2990941-v3-x64.msu
(for experienced users: you can add more updates if you want to avoid downloading the huge list of updates everytime you install windows 7 important to keep install.wim under 4GB due to UEFI/fat32 limitation)

4.2 Go to Apply press Start and wait to finnish.
When it's done close NTlite and go to iso folder and open sources folder.
    Delete boot.wim and setup.exe

    5. Open Windows 10.iso with winrar and extract the boot.wim to your sources folder of Windows 7.

    6. Copy all contents of iso folder of Windows 7 on a usb drive.

Plug, boot and install Windows 7 !!!
