How about a discussion of the impact of using M.2 storage in a Z170 system which is going to only have 20 PCIE lanes.

A single gtx-1080 can consume  16 lanes ?

SLI with 2 graphics cards?

Does U.2 also consume some limited PCIE lanes.

This was off my radar until looking at the x99 Broadwell announcement today from Computex.

So I do not have one, have not seen an actual review.  IMO these GPU cards will not consume all of 20 lanes.  The mobo will only present 16 lanes for the card and probably 8 lanes will feed the GPU all it can handle.  Just MO

Based on doing some more reading today and finally finding the following article I come to the conclusion that for 2-way sli
a) one gains about an average of 80% gaming thruput (fps) with SLI over a single card (this is based on 2x980's)
b) one loses about 5% by using 8 pci lanes vs the full 16
The above is based on http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/pci_express_scaling_game_performance_analysis_review,3.html

c) I will be limited to 1 m.2 addin storage taking 4 pci lanes without cutting into my VGA bandwidth. Probably not worth it. So I'd get the biggest M.2 I can afford.

The high bandwidth SLI connector with dual 1080's may improve on the above SLI (80% improvement) stat. That remains to be seen. I expect we will find out soon.

I'd still appreciate any insights others have or actual experiences.
