Hey everyone, noob builder here. In the middle of my first build (see current assembly at bottom of post), and I decided to do a boot check after installing the cpu, cpu fan, and ram. I hooked up my power supply and booted, only to get post code 55, memory not installed.

I verified with the booklet that the memory was installed in the correct slots. I attempted booting with one stick in each individual slot, and I did this for each stick of ram. I also uninstalled the cpu fan, uninstalled the cpu, confirmed that there were no bent pins on the motherboard, and reinstalled the cpu. Still getting a code of 55. I'd also like to note that yes the ram is clicking/locking firmly into the slot.

I'm not sure what to do next. My first thought was to borrow a stick of ram from a friend to rule that out, but they all have DDR3, not DDR4. I've found similar issues online, and advice I've seen is to update the bios and/or update the settings for the memory within the bios, but I have no clue how to get to the bios from this point because it won't even boot that far.

I'm really worried that my cpu, ram, and/or motherboard will need to be replaced. Any suggestions/troubleshooting help would be greatly appreciated.

So far I have put together:
-Z170 FTW
-Intel i5-6600K
-Crucial Ballistix DDR4-2400 (2 x 8GB)

You tried hitting the cmos button on the mobo, right? This resets the bios to default settings.

    Hello,

I am sorry you are having difficulties posting on your z170 FTW. Currently with only one stick of memory installed in DIMM slot 2 you are receiving post code 55?

May I suggest disconnecting all case fans / cpu fans from the motherboard headers to make sure a fan is not causing a short of some kind. After that I would recommend loosening the CPU heatsink on the socket a bit in case the pressure on the cpu is causing the issue.

Please let us know the result of these troubleshooting tips.

Hello and welcome to the forums cjkmpf!

I'm sorry to hear your new build isn't going so well. From what you've done so far, I suspect it could be a few things: Faulty a grounding issue, faulty memory, or faulty motherboard. While a bad CPU can happen too, it's very, very rare and far less likely than the other three possibilities.

Before we get into that though, check one thing for me. There's a 3 pin header in the upper left corner of the board labeled J13. If you have a fan on that, remove it and see if the system POSTs.

If you're not already testing outside the case on a piece of cardboard or wood, I suggest giving that a try before anything else just in case there's some odd grounding issue happening. Other than this, since you can't borrow any other DDR4 to test with, your only other option would be to RMA the board and see if that does the trick.

Just got back from running errands and checked on the things that have been recommended
As an update and to answer some questions:
This is happening with one stick in DIMM slot 2, and I have tried it with each stick of memory.
This being performed with the motherboard sitting out on a piece of cardboard. Currently the CPU fan is completely uninstalled and disconnected from the motherboard
The J13 3 pin header has nothing connected to it
I have removed the heatsink from the processor and currently the only thing placing pressure on it is the clamp holding it in

Oops. I only did one post check without it and it was only powered for about 5 seconds. Is that bad enough to really screw up? Ok it's back on, and looser than before. Still 55'ing

Maybe a post check is okay, but, I wouldn't chance that for anything. Do you have an old power supply you could try? Also, are you hitting the cmos button while the machine is running? and, super dumb question, your keyboard is plugged in right? haha You should be tapping the delete key like a mad man.

There is a 3 pin connector near the top left of the board (above the VRM heatsink), make sure there is nothing bridging that connection.  A fan plugged in there can cause the same POST code 55.

No other power supply I can try. keyboard is plugged into top left usb slot on the back of the board, and yeah I'm spamming delete but have been unsuccessful in getting into bios even once.

That would have been the one and I also just noticed that Jaeson brought that up earlier.  If you still have any non essential parts installed, remove them.

Otherwise I'd recommend RMA as Jaeson suggested.

So I have a really interesting update.

I decided to go through all the troubleshooting advice once more before RMA'ing. I was placing one stick of memory into each slot testing every one, when I hit a checksum error on slot # 3. This error screen allowed me to go into the bios and select xmp profile #1 (2400Mhz 1.2Vz) for memory. I saved and rebooted and I am now consistently able to boot to bios..... But only if there is a single stick of memory in slot #3. This also only works with one of the 2 sticks of memory, the other one still causes 55 on all slots, leading me to believe it is DOA

This leads me to ask, am I interpreting the slots correctly? If the J13 pin is at the top left as described, are the slots numbered in order from left to right? If this is the case, then I am doing this with one stick of memory in slot # 3.

Yes, you are. Ideally you'll do slot 1, then 3, then 2, then 4. It's sounding like you may have multiple problems, both bad RAM and either the board or CPU. Since it's much rarer for a bad processor, go ahead and register your board th en call us at 888-881-3842 or email support@evga.com and we can help get an RMA started for you.
