I recently purchased a new X99 Micro 2 and a SM951 256GB M.2 PCI-e SDD. But for the life of me I cant see it as detected in the BIOS or in Windows 10.
Hi, Newbie here, please be gentle on me Just finished assembling my PC (For some X-mass gaming) and I'm having the same issues as quoted by David above. I'm trying to get the SM951 to show up in either Win 10 Or Bios (ver 1.02) with no luck. Spent 8 hours yesterday trying various methods mentioned on here, M.2 activated in BIOS; compatibility enabled, with zero results . Ended up installing Windows on another drive and called it a day. Do you guys think it could be a dead M.2 Drive, or am I just being a royal numptie and doing something wrong? EVGA Customer support ( who are very swift in replying BTW) got back to me acknowledging they have another customer with the same issue and I'd be best contacting Samsung...I don't expect a reply from Samsung, going by what I've read, but you never know. Are there known issues with this drive and board? What are the known working M.2 Drives that EVGA recommend for this board? Fingers crossed the combined knowledge of this community can sort me out. Thanks in advance guys. Spec: 5820K EVGA x99 Micro 2 Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16GB DDR4 2666 MHz EVGA GTX 980 ti Hybrid H100I GTX Corsair 350D Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD WIN 10 UPDATE: EVGA Support just got back to me with " Unfortunately, we do not have a list of compatible M.2 SSD's, we are sorry. Please let us know what reply you get from Samsung" I find this lack of knowledge from EVGA on their own product a bit concerning. Why put a feature on your MB and not know what works with it - was there no testing done with it before release? Fair play to EVGA, they respond pretty fast, but they're a bit thin on information IMO. So it looks like I need the community to come up with a blinder, or I'm returning the Drive, and possibly the board, for another option - no point paying for something I can't use!

Make sure your boot mode is set to legacy. My Micro 2 refuses to list my 950 Pro as a boot device whenever I used UEFI instead. Is the bios displaying 4x and Gen 3 for the third PCI-E slot? Good luck. Phil

I am using an SM951 with no issues on the X99 micro 2 but you must have the latest BIOs installed.

To make sure the SM951 is recognized you must use UEFI and there is a new added setting in the latest BIOS for compatibility and this needs to be enabled. The SM951 needs to be formatted as GPT.

Phil, not sure which SSD you're talking about because it could be the legacy SATA 950 Pro or PCEe M.2 SSD that needs UEFI. Johnson, thanks for that info. I couldn't figure out which members had them working on the micro2 but knew there were a few.

In the latest BIOs there is a new compatibility setting for the M.2 and you have to make absolutely sure you enable this. If this is a fresh install of the O/S on the M.2 then you have to choose GPT to ensure the Windows Boot Manager is installed. Once that is done then you have to change the boot order for the correct Windows Boot manager if there is more than one.

Thanks for the screen grabs, chief. Unfortunately my M.2 never get listed so it's never an option to select it. I'll give it another reseat, another go isn't going to hurt. I'll be right back.................

Reseat and re-try = I've just become more Follicly Challenged. I'll be looking like a pool ball by the end of this! Something I've just noticed. There's apparently 2 models of this drive, both with different part numbers:- MZVPV256HDGL and MZHPV256HDGL. The former ( MZVPV) being PCIe NVMe, and the latter (MZHPV) being PCIe ACHI. Would this make a difference?

I believe the one you have is the same as mine. Are you sure it is in the slot all the way? Wiggle it just a very small amount to make sure the pins are seated.

I'm fairly confident it's all the way home. I've had the GPU and the M.2 drive in and out a few times now, so if it's not seated by now it never will be. Going by your screen caps your model number looks like it starts with MZHPV? making yours the AHCI version, whereas mine starts with MZVPV - NVMe version.......Surely that can't be the reason? It's either that or my drive was DOA?

When booting from NVMe on my X99 Classified with an Intel 750 PCIe SSD - it took the following steps. 1) Boot Tab ----- Fast boot --- OFF 2) Boot Tab ----- Boot mode --- UEFI 3) CSM Configuration ---- a) boot option file ----UEFI b) Launch storage oprom ---- UEFI c) Other PCI device ROM priority ---- UEFI 4) Advance Tab ----- USB Configuration --- Legacy USB Support ---- Disabled When I got to the screen where to load Windows, and the drive did not show --- selected load driver button. After loading driver the drive was found. For starters you have to have a motherboard that features a UEFI BIOS that supports NVMe. Then you have to jump through some hoops to get Windows installed as the Samsung XP941 and SM951 SSDs don’t have an OPROM, so you can’t just toss in the Windows installation disc of USB drive and go. You have to use a program like RUFUS to install Windows on the drive in EFI mode. Rod over at RAM City has a guide on how to setup Windows on a Samsung XP941 or SM951 that you can check out here. Once you get the drive up and running you’ll have to use the Microsoft NVMe driver as Samsung doesn’t have their own driver. You’ll also find out that Samsung offers zero customer support for the SM951 NVMe drive since it’s an OEM only device and running something simple like secure erase could be a total PITA unless you wanted to run Linux and perform the operation on another system. To top all that off there is the whole Force Unit Access (FUA) issue that is entirely new to us and many in the industry. The Intel NVMe drives aren’t impacted by FUA’s and since this is the only other NVMe drive that we have to test! We aren’t sure what the overall impact will be for enthusiasts using this drive with the Microsoft Windows 8.1 NVMe driver, but you can flip through our benchmark pages with this drive being tested as a secondary storage device and quickly see the write performance is nothing to write home about! Read more at http://www.legitreviews.c...11#WkLIAVGOwQ8kxCMK.99 Good reviews: http://www.anandtech.com/...-256gb-pcie-ssd-review http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/7181/samsung-sm951-nvme-2-pcie-256gb-ssd-review/index.html http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/products/flash-storage/client-ssd/ "H" version = AHCI "V" version = NVMe http://www.maximumpc.com/samsung-sm951-nvme-256gb-review/ "Just to clarify a few things, it’s important to note that the SM951 M.2 PCIe SSD was already available a while ago, but the earlier release uses the AHCI command set. The SM951 NVMe is essentially the same core device but with some minor tweaks to switch from AHCI to NVMe; going forward in this article, when we say “SM951” we’re specifically talking about the NVMe model. There’s also one major problem with the SM951: It’s intended for OEMs, typically going into laptops, so it’s not widely available, "

Hi Cool GTX, Thanks for the input. Just gave your settings a spin and the results were the same, the Sammy M.2 is just invisible to everything. Funnily enough your link reminded me to try the Samsung Magician Software I have installed for my other drives, but it doesn't see the M.2 drive either. I think it's becoming clear that either the version of the drive I have isn't supported, it's dead, or there's a problem with the Motherboard M.2 slot itself. I've spent nearly three days on it now ( ran out of talent 2 days ago ) and as your signature suggests, I'm flying close to the definition of insanity. Plus the window for being able to return this drive is getting smaller, specially with the holidays almost on us, so it may be time to admit defeat and call it a day. Thank you everyone for your input. You're all Gentlemen/Gentle-ladies in my book

Send it back and get a non-NVMe cause if anything it could be the mobo has flaky support for the newer connection type. Wouldn't surprise me one bit since when it comes to any on-board hardware on the mobo things tend to be dicey.

Thanks for the kind words. Nope, Samsung Magician Software Does NOT work with their M.2 devices Did you try RUFUS? Maybe the New 950 M.2 would work better for you; as a retail part there is support. The 951 is OEM and sans any Samsung support.

I have indeed been using a RUFUS created UEFI Drive from the get go, having found a similar article to the RAMcity links you provided - thank you for those. However, the RAM city video walkthroughs both show the M.2 drives a being viewable in both Bios and Windows, which is never the case in my scenario. As for trying the new 950 M.2.......Jury is out on that. These past 3 days have left me a bit jaded on the M.2 front. M.2 seems a bit like a crapshoot at the moment and I don't have the patience or the cash to experiment on something with very limited support - If the manufacturer can't give you a list of what they know works with their own Motherboard, what does that say! The only useful support has been from you guys on here, so thank you for keeping me half sane over the past couple of days, chaps. Killmur Send it back and get a non-NVMe cause if anything it could be the mobo has flaky support for the newer connection type. Tend to agree with you on the flaky support, bit hit and miss; which is a real shame as it was a deciding factor on why I chose this board. As for the drive; right now it's pretty definite it's going to be returned, possibly the board too. I'd rather put the cash towards a cheaper board and just grab a couple of SSD's for an easy life. But I'll sleep on it and see what a less frustrated version of myself thinks in the morning. Cheers peeps!
