Does the X99 FTW K support M.2 Sata SSD's?  And if so, when one is used does it still disable PCIE slot #6?

I ask because I believe M.2 Sata SSD's don't actually use PCIE lanes, so there would be no reason to disable slot #6.  The eVGA documentation doesn't mention M.2 SATA anywhere.

If I remember correctly, there was an EVGA tech that said that SATA m.2 drives are NOT compatible. It's a completely different signalling type that cannot pass over the PCIE lanes.

It will use PE6–x8 when the M.2 is used. it is M.2 Socket 3 Key-M 110mm. You can see that here http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/151-BE-E097.pdf in the x99 FTW K Manual on page 17.

Wasn't he wondering about m.2 SATA vs m.2 NVME compatibility?

As in, can he use a m.2 SATA drive in the m.2 slot of the X99 FTW K?

I know a NVME drive will work because it says so in the manual, but a SATA version m.2 drive is not mentioned.

Edit: Regardless as to whether or not it will be compatible, once the m.2 slot is activated PE6 is disabled and cannot be used. For a 40 lane or a 28 lane processor, it will be disabled as per page 17 as Andrew said.

Yes you are correct. it only supports it through PCIe not sata

Thanks for the quick response and I did read that.  However, I was thinking that document may only include a description of the fastest mode of operation.  The M.2 specification states:

The M.2 specification provides up to four PCI Express lanes and one logical SATA 3.0 (6 Gbit/s) port, and exposes them through the same connector so both PCI Express and SATA storage devices may exist in form of M.2 modules. Exposed PCI Express lanes provide a pure PCI Express connection between the host and storage device, with no additional layers of bus abstraction.

If M.2 Sata is truly not supported, then I'm assuming this drive wouldn't work with this board:
Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E500BW)

Typed all that, while you had already answered the question.  Thanks.
