Need to get this figured out, so that I can advertise if it will work with the motherboard. I bought the Crucial m550 m.2 SATA and figured out it isn't compatible with the ASUS RVE. I don't want to sell it to someone with a Classified or like board, if it isn't supported. I can not find direct answer in EVGA's 2 part motherboard guides.

Things I know so far:

M.2 M Key 22x80
The rest seems to be a mystery.

The RVE shows that it only works with m.2 PCIe drives, but I already had this one. I am looking to purchase a Samsung XP941 or Plextor M6e as they are the only two PCIe drives currently available on the normal consumer market.

Thanks all.

Just got the answer from EVGA Jacob on Twitter. For those that are curious, as I couldn't find it listed anywhere, the m.2 is PCIe, Not m.2 SATA. The limits you to the Plexi or and a Samsung mentioned in post 1. If you end up with the Crucial, it will not work.

I have never done a raid, but it seems like the perfect pain, especially if a drive fails.

I will be ordering the Samsung drive in the very near future.

Scarlet-Tech, thanks for the heads-up. I was considering M.2, and will admit, to not realizing the 2 different interfaces.  The Samsung certainly has the stellar reviews!

I was in the same boat, and actually posed the question as I had no prior experience with the new interfaces. I didn't get much of a response, and EVGA is now looking into updating the information provided on the drive slot, so that users are aware prior to purchasing.

If I save at leadt one individual time and money, my mission is complete. :-)

I find it strange that EVGA doesn't provide this info within the motherboard user manual.

The user manuals are so vague from EVGA. The BOOK that came from Asus is so in depth, it is absolutely baffling. I would gladly apply to work for EVGA, just to build in depth manuals to go with the equipment LoL.

Remember, I never looked at the old z77 and z87 manuals.. They were both 100% in Japanese... So, I never even glanced, lol.

^I second that Scarlet, that contributed to my X58 meltdown, the book said to use the extra power cable with 3-4 cards (for 4 alone pretty sure), while only two 480 Classy HC's did the trick.  I always plug that extra cable in now and life is good

The Samsung is a 4 channel card, where the Plextor is 2 channel.

I recently purchased a Samsung XP941, but I was hoping the PCIe 3.0 drives would be out, but not yet.

I grabbed a 128gb Samsung from Ram City. I couldn't refuse it, as I want the best possible and the Samsung is getting better reviews over all. I have never had an issue from my Plextor SSD, but I definitely look forward to getting the system running with Samsung.

Can you use the m.2 pcie as a cache drive? (accelerated with IRST)

Also the controller temps on these m.2 boards reportedly run hot and the location on the motherboards do not allow for any airflow.

I am not sure about the cache driver.

As for the temps, I know EVGA has the between cards, if you run 3 PCIe cards. Asus has it right between the 24 pin and Ram slot, which has airflow.

You could get a small fan, 80mm or smaller, and aim it directly toward the m.2 lane, and cool it that way.

If you are using ACX style coolers, the air will be flowing from the ACX, although slightly warmer due to the gpu temps, and passing right around the slot as well.

That's what I like about M.2, it uses PCIe, I was going to go with the Plexi but in the end decided to go with 3 or 4 730's in RAID0.

Why would you want to? Not trying to be rude, I'm honestly not sure why you would run it as a cache drive? As for controller temps, I haven't seen anything above typical in my X99 Classified.

Correcting the original post. It is M.2 SATA and m.2 PCIe. I had mislabeled it m.2 mSATA previously.

Did you get things sorted out? I know you were having issues with the CPU running 60+c, how is it doing now, I forgot to subscribe to that thread so not sure where it's at.

It is mounted on the Rampage V Extreme, I switched the actual cooling plate (due to the flexing of the nickel/copper plate) from the one I was using over to the one that was on the 3930k,and haven't seen it above 60c yet.

Originally it was throttling at 82c with the other cooling plate for the Supremacy block. Now that I moved it to a known working block, it stays much cooler. I am going to try to get the one replaced, so I can get the x79 back online as well.

Yep, at full load under AIDA64 stress test. Changing that one part lowered temps 20 degrees... It makes me happy :-)

Haha! Got to grab them quick. Give it time. They are worth the wait. I would go for 3 for gaming purposes, but I may look for one more 780ti for the Benching purposes. I may end up grabbing 2 more and putting both on the x79 eventually.

On that one WB, me thinks there might be blockage inside of it.  How long did you use it for, what fluids and biocide you use and whens the last time you did maintenance to that loop using that WB?

I used it for 5 month, with EK EKoolant amd the block was brand new when I installed it. I tore it down multiple times and checked for blockage. I also checked for blockage when installing the Supremacy Evo top. The micro lanes are clear and nothing is corroded.

As shown in the pictures, that block flexes a lot. The one I am using now does not flex as much.

Oh ok.  That's odd for that block to flex so much.

My personal preference as I've had no issues with are the use of Swiftech blocks.  Actually I have all 3 generations here. lol

I haven't ordered another block yet, but will be trying the other block again, when I put the x79 back together.

Have you clocked your cache yet Scarlet?  I haven't had much luck at 38 or above yet, think a vin of 2v or more will be needed to keep the vring lower around 1.2v.  No problems up to 4.6 so far on the cores though, think I'll wait for nateman's vreg block to try out more vin.

I am at 4544mhz on the cores (101 bclk and 45 multiplier) and I am at 4040 on the cache so far, with stock voltage.

I am waiting for the time zone challenge. To be completed before I go further with the cache.

I'm getting almost identical core clock/voltage settings as your cpu, within about 10mv and not bad results considering 8 core monster at good gaming speed, HT on, low temps, excellent stability.  No complaints here even if my cache doesn't go higher

I am doing the folding thing, and I keep very slowly bumping the BCLK, and I have to say... my Folding score jumped nearly 50k on the PPD side.. which is HUGE in my eyes.  I went from BCLK 101 to 101.2 was all LOL...

I may look at trying to acquire a better cpu here in the near future.  I am happy for now though.  This thing in impressive.
