I recently decided to sell my third video card, I have never really been happy with tri-SLI and I've actually had it disabled via the PCIE switch for a couple months now.  I am trying to reconfigure the motherboard for x16/x16 for slots 1 and 4; I've disabled 2 and 3 via the dip switches.  No matter what I do, it shows slot 1 at x8 and slot 4 at x16.  I am on the most recent BIOS, 1.20.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this? The cards are Titan Xs if it matters.

    X99 Classified
    5960X
    4x8GB g.skill 2667
2x TitanX in slot 1 and 4 (slot 2 & 3 disabled via dip switch)
PCI USB 3.0 card in slot 6
couple SSDs and HDs, not really relevant

This looks like a BIOS problem to me.  It shows x8 in the BIOS for that slot.

It looks like you've got a PCIe card in one of the slots. That's going to draw lanes just like a video card does. If you remove it, you should see the lanes jump to 16x/16x on the video cards. Don't be too concerned about 16x vs. 8x PCIe 3.0 though, the performance difference is about 1%, or less than 1FPS at 60FPS.

With your 40-lane processor, PCIe Slot 1 should run at x16 (unless PCIe Slot 2 is used) and PCIe Slot 4 should run at x16 (unless PCIe Slot 3 is used)..I would remove any add-in card you might have populating PCIe Slot 2 instead of just disabling it and see what happens.

It's also possible that the card in Slot 1 is faulty and stuck in x8 Mode, that's happened before too..You could switch the cards to find out..Or just try each card individually in Slot 1.

    That's all I have for you..Good luck.

A while ago i had trouble with a 660Ti that would only run at x2 mode. Like wat xD

Anyway, i reseated the card in its slot and it went back at full x16 mode. I guess it was just a bit of dust or something

From personal experience. When I use older VGA I have on Classy it reports some silly data. While board get it right with my venerable EVGA 8800 GTS640, it gets completely stump with MSI 7950 TF2 or MSI 580 TF3. Both cards are reported as Gen.1 cards while both are Gen.2. Still there is no performance problem. Like I said many, many times, seems that EVGA X99 range has some serious issues with lane negotiation or simply reporting "skills" are lacking. :)

Next time I pull it all apart I'll try individual cards in slot 1 to see if it makes a difference. Watercooling does have its disadvantages. :(

When i use my machine to test something, i have to use a PCIe x1 riser cable with an external blackplane card thing as there's no room in my case haha

The first surround display setup I built was using a Matrox Parhelia AGP card in an old low profile case.  I used a right-angle adapter to get the card to fit in the case.... the good old days of "cut off bits until it fits" :)

My friend had the built in video die on him, on a system running a pcie x8 raid card in his only x16 slot leaving only an x1 slot. That was no way to fit any kind of riser in either, so i took a hacksaw and cut off 15 lanes of the pcie connector on a GeForce 210! Suprisingly it actually worked lmao

I have the same issue as you. I brought it up in this forum in September 2015 http://forums.evga.com/980ti-Classified-2way-SLi-PCIE-lane-issues-X99-Classified-MB-NO-x16x16-m2399449.aspx The problem was never addressed... I got 2 1080's on Friday still can only get slot 1 x16 slot 4 x8....

I think you have to make sure the DIP Switch is disabled, otherwise it enables the lane splitting, reducing it to x8 on slot 4.

Also running a 5820K will limit it to x8.

    For what it's worth...

I have my two 970's in PCIe slots 1 & 4.  All dip switches are enabled.  BIOS settings manually set to use Gen3.  No other cards of any kind installed in any PCIe slots.  Both my GPU's run at Gen3, x16.  This is using a 40 lane CPU.

That's exactly how it should work with a 40 lane proc.  If not, there is a BIOS, Board, CPU issue in your specific setup.

I'm not Raymondb04, but what the heck... :)

I have a pair of Titan X's, in slots PE1 and PE4, and a USB3.0 card in slot PE6.  Using the dipswitches, I have 1, 4, 5 on (which I believe are slots 1, 4, and 6, with the PCIE_X4 slot not being on the switches?)

I am using the most current version of the BIOS, 1.20.  When I boot into the bios, it shows x8 for one and x16 for the other. I've tried removing the USB card from slot 6, makes no difference.

Yeah, people have had lane negotiation issues reported many times.  Sometimes messing with it will fix it.  Its odd and weird.

Try the first card by itself.  Once its x16, add the second card in Slot #4.  Get both of those to x16/x16 and then add the last GPU.  I would also maybe try all of this in stock settings and maybe a stick of RAM.  When you add the top of the line 8-core CPU and lots of RAM plus higher speed, it can get funky.

Also, there is a new BIOS out that was recently released.  Try that one and see if it helps as well.

I tried disabling the slot 4 card via dip, still getting x8 on the first card, with no other cards active.  Also upgraded to the new BIOS, same.  I'm going to have to test when I can pull the loop apart and move the cards around, make sure it's not the video card that's the problem.

in my PCIe config screen I have PE1 and 4 set to Gen3 (not Auto)

I tried everything I could think of...  way to much to go through. I never found a solution my slot 4 card is always at x8 ever since upgrading from 780ti's to 980ti's. I was hoping it was a 980ti thing but I got my 1080's the day they were released and the problem persists. I would like to see someone else with 1080's that does not have this problem. I got tired of looking for a fix it has been almost a year now. I will follow the thread and see what you guys figure out my post is here http://forums.evga.com/98...O-x16x16-m2399449.aspx

You're not the first to complain about lane negotiations gone wrong.  I mean, if you've truly done everything possible and at a stand still, other then trying a different CPU, I'd most likely proceed with a RMA for the MB.

I have tried swapping CPU's it did not fix the issue. I need the PC on a daily basis so I am not in a position to RMA it. I don't think it is that much of a performance decrease anyways. I am just going to buy one of the new X99 boards that are coming out.
