Hey guys seem to be having trouble with my USB 3 ports

up until about a week ago I wasn't having any trouble with this board but then after a system restart I noticed my USB 3.0 ports were no longer working.
At the moment I have 2 USB 3.0 devices one is a kingston external card reader and the other is sandisk memory stick (this will be important later on)
So when I first noticed I had this Problem I started all the typical Trouble shooting.
First I checked the BIOs and everything was enabled so I went back to windows and started in there. I tried my Kingston device in everything USB 3 port and got no form of life out of it. tried it in USB 2 ports and it works. I then tried it in my secondary PC and it worked in the USB 3 ports.
I then moved onto the Sandisk and things got interesting. I got the same results as I did with my kingston device but when this was in my front USB 3 ports the LED in the stick lite up but still nothing in windows while it is in the back ports the LED doesn't even light up...

At this point I started suspecting drivers so I done a uninstalled them and reinstalled them. Still nothing, I then looked and saw I wasn't on the latest version so I updated and again nothing still no ports. Interestingly Windows 7 is not kicking up a fuse about not being able to find the ports like you would expect it to if they are broken or just not functioning properly.

I have also today Updated to the latest BIOS 2.07 and still not getting any luck

So Does anyone else have any ideas as I am all out of them and really want my USB 3 ports back. :(

Hope I have explained it well and if you have any questions just ask :)

Also the only settings in BIOS I have changed is put my Intel SATA 6 ports into RAID and disabled the onboard audio.

If you plug another device into the USB 3.0 port other than your USB stick what happens then?

the marval sata port driver is buggy. What happens if you disable the the marvell drivers in device manager under 'storage' and then reboot. Do you have usb3 then?

what happens if you delete the usb 3 from device manager and then reinstall it. does it work?

Hello,

I recommend giving the following a try:
  1. Disable the USB 3.0, save the changes boot into Windows
  2. Restart and go back to BIOS and re-enable the USB 3.0 ports and boot back into Windows.
See if that gives you any luck.  Sometimes a reset to the settings will fix the problem.

If not, please give us a call so we can assist you further.  888-881-3842

You may want to look under usb configuration and make sure all ports are enabled as well. If anything you can try pulling out the board and test it on a non conductive surface, to help rule out any grounding issues as well.

all ports are enabled

can't imagine a system restart causing a grounding issue but could give it a go but wont have the time till Wednesday now.

I seemed to have fixed it in the most random possible way

I removed my top 780 booted into windows and I had USB 3 back and fully working,
have put the 780 back in and the USB 3 are still working, Must of been a short between the backplate on my card, the x79 dark I/O cover and the rear USB 3 ports by the looks of it :S

EDIT: One thing I noticed when I first booted into windows, it reinstalled the drivers for USB 3.0. Very random, actually happy my PC booted into windows instead of my windows 7 pen drive

would of had to reinstalled windows for nothing and possibly sent the board back for nothing :)

AND...

The rear ports are gone again. The front ports are still working but not the rear.

there seems to be a red LED "Breathing" just under the right set of DIMMs if anyone knows what that is about?

EDIT: and with a system restart it seems my rear USB 3 ports are back working again but now my front ones aren't working

EDIT2: The red LED I am talking about is the one by the left Dimm, It seems to be under the heatsink slightly

I have the red pulsating led light under the dimm slots also.  Normal I'd say.

Re: X79 Dark USB 3.0 problems 2013/10/22 07:55:05 (permalink)
to be honest it would be extremely helpful if the user manual explained what all these different LEDs are for.
I have counted 7 different LEDs on this board so far for what I'm guessing is all for troubleshooting, yet no where actually explains what they are troubleshooting
okay now I guess I don't have to worry about that LED I shall look else where to see what may be causing this

EDIT(Again): Removing the I/O cover from the Motherboard seems to give my my 2 front ports and the top 2 USB 3.0 ports on the back back, the bottom 2 still aren't working :/

Re: X79 Dark USB 3.0 problems 2013/10/22 11:22:56 (permalink)
Hello stevenwright6379,

I am sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with your motherboard.  With the issues you are describing and the testing you have done, it does sound like there may be a possible grounding issue.

To eliminate any grounding issues, please try testing the motherboard outside the case.  Place it on a non-conductive surface (cardboard).  Have the bare bones components in the system, CPU and Heatsink, Video Card, and 1 stick of RAM. Power up the system, and test the USB ports that are having a problem.  If the issue is resolved, then you will want to take a look at the stand offs inside the case, making sure they match up to the board.

If the problem with the usb ports still occurs, then you will want to set up an RMA request with the support ticket number that was provided to you yesterday.  We do have a couple of different options for RMA, Standard or Cross Ship RMA.  The Cross ship, will allow us to send out a replacement motherboard to you first.  In order to do so, we would have you pay the full amount of the replacement mother board as collateral via Paypal.  The collateral would be refunded once we received the defective motherboard.

Please let us know if you have any other questions you may have, or feel free to contact our EU office at  SupportEU@EVGA.com

I'm having similar problems with my USB ports on this motherboard. The USB 3.0 sockets are working ok now that I updated the driver to the latest one. But the USB 2.0 sockets (all of them - I've tested each one) keep randomly turning themselves on and off.

I heard the USB 2.0 sockets are tied in with the Intel Chipset Drivers. Is that correct?

:edit:

Scratch that, even the USB 3.0 are randomly shutting down too again. Man this is annoying.

Sorry for the delayed response, got hit with a huge workload so haven't been able to sort anything else out.
For the time being my USB 3.0 ports seem to be working. So I'm going to leave it for the time being, at least till I have finished the new project I have been given at work.

OK my USB 3 ports have cut out again. I'm also nearly finished my heavy work load for a client so I will be trying a reinstall of windows and if that doesn't work it will be going back to EVGA. Hopefully it wont take too long to sort it out, I can't go too long on my xeon rig

I am disappointed that my £150 MSI board that is over a year old is working better than this £300 EVGA board that is just over a month old.

i too have had problems with my USB 3.0 not working on my build. I am using a Seagate 1tb back up plus (it was a gift (new)). it doesn't work on my laptop either, but that's a different story. out of the, what, 5 usb 3.0 slots, it doesn't want to work at all. The light is coming on, and it is spinning, but there is nothing from windows saying that there is a device plugged in, nothing in hardware, device manager, disk manager, nothing. The External works in USB 2.0 but not 3. this has troubled me for a while now really. i just finaly got sick of trying to install chipset drivers, usb drivers, intel drivers, breadboarding, and seagates, albeit AWFUL, windows tools and other software. i use this device a lot too. i really need it faster. i have tried re installing windows, too. please help.

Allen, do you have disabled any of the Marvell onboard devices? If so, please reenable it/them.
You can tell the board not to load Marvell's op rom during boot in the CSM menu inside the boot settings in bios.

I am curious, how exactly does one do that?
I see an option rom setting in the CSM menu - it gives two options - Force Bios, and Keep Current.
Mine by default is set to Force Bios.
I am running full UEFI, and currently have Marvell disabled?

Under CSM there is an option about loading storage op-rom. Choose "Do not load" there.

It at least disables the hdd checking for that crappy thing as its bios is not being loaded.

Ok I see, but launch CSM has to be enabled to access that. I have my CSM set to disabled, as I understood for full UEFI that was how it should be set?

Dunno about how to use UEFI or what its advantages are. I am using W7 Pro x64 w/csm (w/out it did not boot correctly iirc). :-(

Main advantage of uefi is the ability to use a disk of just about any size. Drives over 2 TB can be a boot drive. The modules for the uefi bios are also supposed to be easier to work with for the guys who write and update these bios's. Faster boot as well.

Allen, do you have disabled any of the Marvell onboard devices? If so, please reenable it/them.
You can tell the board not to load Marvell's op rom during boot in the CSM menu inside the boot settings in bios.

this was the solution to mine, but speeds are still rather slow lol. this fixed my problem!

I got up to 210MB/s with the right HDD case. It can do it from my experience. I also have a bad USB 3 key that kind of "lags" during transfers from and to it.

Hey guys seem to be having trouble with my USB 3 ports

I found the solution to the problem of inoperative USB3 on x79 Dark.
The BIOS must be: Marvell SATA RAID>> Enabled
Install the correct drivers. It is also good news, not the Home screen appears MARVELL
Edit:
After installing the drivers, X79-Marvell_eSATA.
It does not work. I had to uninstall it.
Edit2:
It's just a momentary euphoria. When you turn off the power supply and switched on again, USB3 does not work. After the second turn on the computer (without excluding the power supply) USB3 working again.
This is sick!
