Well it wouldn't be the same price, but have you considered a closed loop water cooler, such as one from corsair?

Also try bumping up the voltages slightly and test again

When was the last time you reapplied the Tim

Water Cooling was hardcore to me back then, but it could have been the best investment!

Also try bumping up the voltages slightly and test again => You mean to up the VCore Voltages? by how much?

I'm currently working as usual on the 186 setup and it works fast and furious. the Tim is the Prime95 testing? I applied it to 191, but it crached after 45-1m and the temps were okay (arround 75) with BSOD..

Bump it up to the next option and repeat until bsod stops. If you bump up .2 volts on vcore and it doesn't work up the qpi\pll vcore. TIM stands for thermal interface material. It is also referred to as thermal grease and is the stuff between the CPU and heatsink.

I never reapplied any TIM since the beginning, would that change a whole lot? Do I have to buy new thermal paste to enhance cooling a little?

Gomez, I just encountered a BSOD with 186 after 30 minutes of usage (installing lot of stuff), any ideas? maybe we should make sure 186 works.. What are your suggestions?

Yeah reapplying once in a while us good but only if you know how. Practice on other surfaces before doing CPUs. If it is unstable try pushing voltage up then test again. Remember to do voltage in small steps.

Re:X58 Still! Need help with OC 2013/05/28 21:26:38 (permalink)
Question about Thermal Paste application: When I bought the i7 (it was when the 920 just released), I applied the thermalpaste with a credit card, so it currently has an uniform paste on all the CPU. Is that a good way?

I'm now trying from:
CPU VCore ( 1.32500v )
To
CPU VCore ( 1.33125v )
I'll make run Prime95 for at least an hour because 10-12 minutes seems not to be enough for the way I use my computer (I'm a developer using VS2012, Eclipse, SQL Server, Remote Desktop, just as well as Games) intensively so I may be more comfortable testing more than 10 minutes. I'll note the temps as well FYI. Talk to you in an hour, thanks so far Gomez and bdary !!!

I did Prime95 for an hour, temps were arround 75-80 for core 1, 71-78 for core 2.

I lost all the temps because it seems it failed to post. Anyway. I'm ready for more! (if possible). If you think I should apply thermal paste before keeping in, let me know I'll buy a tube.

The credit card and drop method are the most widely used. Now raise the bclck by 5 and test for 10-12 min in prime. When you get a bsod got back 10 on the bclck and test for and hour on prime and monitor those temps! If you notice your temps getting up stop prime. We don't want to try your CPU. How long ago was the Tim application? Every year you should change it out. I recommend gelid gc-extreme. Also one of these day you are going to want to get a new cooler to raise it up even more

No problem, I'll be off the comp for few days but I'll buy a GELID soon. Depending on the cooling and compatibility with future boards/cpu (don't want to buy another cooler that wouldn't work for next i7 releases), I'd buy one. What would you suggest that is compatible with my i7? I kinda like Corsair's Water Cooling All-In-One, I saw good reviews of 4.5 GHZ OC, but if you have better for the buck, let me know!

For the compound, it's long ago, I can't tell exactly but around June 2009 (because i7 920 was launched December 2008, accumulating money), so yeah, a while ago. I'm buying a Gelid, do you remove the compound with Pure Acetone (saw that on forums)?

I'm trying right now 191, I'll keep you posted, thanks a lot!

Use 99% rubbing alchohol and coffee filters or lint free cloth. In my in my opinion coffee filters work great. You can go with either a cooler master seidon or a corsair hydro. Personally I would go with corsair. For cleaning the CPU you can also grab a arctic silver surface cleaner and purifier. That's about it. And I believe that most coolers are compatible with most sockets.

And make sure ambient temps are cool. No point of water cooling if the room is 90f!

"Use 99% rubbing alchohol and coffee filters or lint free cloth" I don't understand the involvement of the coffee filter?! Since I never done it before, I can't imagine why.. EDIT: Ah, use Coffee filters intead of cloth. Sorry! Since I don't have that, I'll check what I can get. I'd have to buy Rubbing Alchohol also.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181032 Seems like a good price and would fit the back of my case! I'll check if I'm buying it.

Bad news, 191 BSOD after 1 min of Prime. I'm going to upgrade the VCore Voltage from
CPU VCore ( 1.33125v )
TO
CPU VCore ( 1.33750v )

I'll keep you post!

Re:X58 Still! Need help with OC 2013/05/29 00:44:09 (permalink)
Here's my result (No BSOD :D)
03:14 - Start
03:18 - 81-82 78 79 75-76
03:24 - 76-80 71-74 72-77 69-73
03:30 - 78-81 77-78 78 75
03:40 - 79-82 78-79 78-79 75-76
EDIT: Even up to 4:14 it still ran without BSOD with decent temps.
Seems fine for Temps and no BSOD. I think the next step would be at least to buy a new cooler (along with new thermal compound). I'll think about it over night (it's now 3:45 now!) and I'll keep you posted! Thanks again for the help!

EDIT: Took 30 minutes to think about it, I bought the H100i and the Compound. Please stay with me as I don't want to mess up! :) Thanks a bunch for the help!

Sorry about the waiting, I'm still updating Windows 8 (like it was before).

FYI: I bought an M4 Crucial SSD and I had to switch to RAID Mode to boot, else it would fail to boot up.

So I'm currently updating windows and I shall post the results shorty, sorry again for the delay!

I'm curious: For the same price (at the time i7 was the newest fastest CPU!) as the V8, what could have I bought to have a better cooling solution? Thanks!

If you have the budget for it, Corsair closed loop coolers are pretty close in cost to the top of the line air coolers. With your case, it looks like you would have a few different options to choose from.

As far as your 191 bclk crashing, it's up to you.  We can increase the voltage needed to make it stable, but your CPU temps might be up to high.  If you want to try 191, then up your vcore to 1.33125v and your VTT to +125mv and test again.  Watch the temps.  Let me know.

Lol...never mind.  I didn't see the 2nd page of your thread...I see you already tried it and went H2O...  I'll finish reading and catch up to where you're at now.

The reason I suggest doing only a 10 - 12 min test was just to check for the obvious crashes or bsod's.  This way we get the voltages in the ball park.  Once we reach your OC goal, that's when we run a long test to insure stability and make any more voltage tweaks needed.

After I looked at the specs of your Antec case yesterday and saw how you had 2 120mm fans in the rear, I was picturing the H100i fitting back there nicely...
Keep in mind that now that your clock speed is getting up there along with your Bclk, vcore bumps are likely, but VTT voltage also comes more into play.  Upping the VTT a bit can allow you to use a bit less Vcore (maybe 1 tick less), so we would want to balance the 2 voltages.

I liked the conversation I saw.

For the fans, can't I just use the fans I have currently? or it won't work?

I REALLY appreciate all the help you putted in, next step is installing my water cooling. I just need to know how to make a push/pull setup?

Hey bud.  What you can do is use the 2 that came with it and the 2 you'll be replacing that are in your case already...  What you may have to do is put the rad and 2 fans pushing inside the case and the other 2 fans pulling on the outside.  That is unless you have room for all of it inside, but I'm thinking not.

A push pull is when a fan is pushing air into the radiator and the other is pulling it out.

Hey bud...Something to keep in mind once you switch to your H2O cooler.  You won't have the air from the CPU fan anymore cooling your Vreg (VRM).  What I had to do was strap a 40mm fan on it's heatsink with a zip tie.  After that, no problem.  Max temp I ever see on it now is 54 - 58C while gaming or benching.  Other than that, sits at 49C at idle...

The voltage regulation module.  It's located right along side the CPU socket.  If you're facing your mobo in the case, it's just off to the left of it.  You should see the passive heat sink there.

Just strap a fan to it, or if the rad will be pumping air into the system it shouldn't be a problem
