I know that the specifications say that the X58 SLI (E758) can only use up to 24GB of ram, but do you know if it is possible to use 32GB, maybe if I update the BIOS?  I work in CG and need lots of ram for handling dense meshes, rendering, and image/video processing.

I'm thinking of getting this ram kit (can't post the link because I am a new member):
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

If I can't use 32GB with this motherboard I guess I will have to upgrade to a newer one.

Dagtonn - Did you ever get your board to read all 24gb of DDR 3 ram?  The problem Im having is that I can only get my board to recognize 12gb right now.  When I fill all six slots I get F3 or F6 post..  Ram kit is Corsair Vengance 1600mghz 24gb kit.  Got windows to see 16GB using XMP but Windows just cut the ram in half and only gave me access to 8gb of it.  Totally lost.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, actually I ended up not even trying it because I really needed to use the full 32GB for my CG animation applications, and when I called EVGA they said they didn't think that was possible with the X58 chipset.  I bought an X99 motherboard and it's working well with the full 32GB.

But your problem could also be caused in part by the fact that certain versions of Windows 7 have memory limits.  Home Basic x64 is limited at 8 GB, Home Premium at 16GB, and only if you get up to Professional can you use the full x64 128GB capacity.  Maybe you already know that though.  Good luck!  I hate trying to figure out stuff like this

Yeah, the CPU memory controller is only rated for 4GB per DIMM, up to a max of 24GB on the X58 platform.  The issue really isn't the board, but the CPU memory controller limits for socket 1366 chips.

@larry-pitts - If you're having issues with F3 and F6, that could mean you have a bad stick, bad slot, or bent pins in the CPU socket.  I'd also suggest manually changing the memory settings/voltages yourself, rather than use the XMP, since you're still having problems.

If you're missing memory, try these:

Note x58 chipset works fine with 8gb dimms so you can get up to 48gb of ram.

has anyone ever actually made this work?  I'm still interested in finding this out because my brother may use my old X58 motherboard.

For the x58 and "W3xxx" xeon, the intel spec is max 4GB per and 24GB max. I've heard people running 48GB. I'm not sure if the 48GB is actually useable, but it is recognized. The X5xxx xeons support up to 288GB (intel spec).

Has anyone tried 3 x 8gb (24gb)  I am not trying to pass the 24gb limit just trying to use 3 less ram slots
    my specs
    X58 Asus Formula 3
    i7 990X (oc'd 4.5)
24gb Dominator running at 1600 (suppose to be 2000Mhz all slots filled)
if I run only 3 slots I can get the ram to run slightly above 2000Mhz
is the reason I am asking,  thank you in advance

Generally speaking, trying to run all 6 slots on the X58 requires tweaking the memory timings depending upon how strong the IMC is on the CPU. Basically start out by looking up the timings for your memory and add 1 to each of the first three. So a default memory timing of say 8-8-8-24 becomes 9-9-9-24 2T. Increasing your VTT voltage may also help. Try +150 as a starting point. The IMC on the i7 is capable of accessing more memory that what is listed by intel. When the spec was written the largest memory modules available were 4GB.

Hello, i dont mean to hijack the thread, but im getting my mobo (x58) modded to get a xeon x5690. Id like to get 32 gig ram on the system (running at 2000mhz if possible)

Any way this could work? What kind of ram should i be looking at? any suggestions?

    Thanks alot

It might work but you will be putting a strain on the memory controller but seeing as how this is a Zeon that should be less of a problem than the consumer CPUs. For the E758 motherboard I could only find 16GB memory sets and that is what I would recommend. I did see this one but I have no idea if it will work:

Thank you for the suggestion! The mb is tri (also can accept dual), would it be a problem since the corsair is quad(also dual) ?

    Cheers!

You could use 3 of the 4 modules and then you would have 24 GB for triple channel memory. With 4 modules installed you'll be using dual channel memory based on the X58 motherboard manual.

Or simply use this memory finder on the Corsair website to see if you can find something better: http://www.corsair.com/se...inder?type=motherboard

You can use these in the first four slots. I'm not sure how well the memory controllers will handle the overclocked memory, but the Xeon can handle the amount 288GB total or 96 per channel I would imagine. You would be populating two channels in this scenario if I'm not mistaken.

Friends! tell me whether I can install on your motherboard EVGA x58 SLI processor Intel® Xeon® Processor X5680 (12M Cache, 3.33 GHz, 6.40 GT / s Intel® QPI)?
    Will the QPI and VT-d?
There is a very good offer on Aliexpress, US $129.88
