Not sure whether to go ahead and get a few new parts (i7, new case, motherboard etc....starts to mount up though!). Or would you wait for X99 chipset and 800 series of GPUs? Just wanted some input/thoughts really.

Oh or to get a new mouse and keyboard been using an old sidewinder (performance has been pretty good for the price) and a R.A.T 3 for over a year now!

I asked the same question of my 3770K and Sabertooth z77 on some other forums.  I was told, categorically, NOT to upgrade until Skylake.  Performance and features are negligible from z77 to z97.  Skylake will be a big step up with DDR4 and more.  Get the mouse and keyboard and plan for the future.

Alright sweet, probably will do. Been looking at the Black Widow Ultimate and the Ultimate Stealth. Not sure which switches I'd prefer, the quieter orange ones or the clickly greens.

Considering i5 2500k to i5 4790k is considered a bad upgrade, id say no lol. I'd say only upgrade to haswell if your on Core 2 or first gen i5

The primary components of your system look good, I wouldn't upgrade.  I would look into peripheral upgrades though, such as mouse/keyboard but more importantly audio (unless you happen to have a really good audio setup).

I went ahead and treated myself to a Deathadder (got it reasonably priced from Amazon for £48) and a Blackwidow Ultimate...the 2013 version with the blue switches not the new one with razers own! :-D......I just use my Soundworks speakers.

Good enough mouse choice though not so much for the keyboard choice.  Still better than your Sidewinder though.

Not awesome but definitely improved if you have one of the high end Z87/Z97 motherboards.  There's still a big difference between Realtek ALC1150 and a good sound card.

only if your willing to spend the money, I bought a Xonar for my computer and sold it again, because my x540 5.1 sounded the same on it, or the onboard audio on my previous p35 board I sold 2 weeks ago

^ Yes that is true, you need the right hardware to take advantage of it.

Maximus VI Formula oboard cant touch my SoundBlaster Z, i tested it for a few weeks. The Z is much louder, clearer and can deliver more bass when needed.
