***EDIT #2***
Looks like we are making a team here folks! Man how exciting! Up to 9 signups so far in the first few hours. Looks like we are going for it

Thank you for your continued support for such a great grouping of causes and teammates

***EDIT #1***
Just wanted to make one point clear. If we do this as a team I only look to be a member of that team. I am happy to change whomever the Captain could/will be. Based on the PM's I have gotten and some other feedback it looks like a team should be formed. All I hope is that I am a part of that new launch, and that we do not take folks from F@H. Nothing more.

WCG is great for CPU usage (And some GPU) with F@H being great for GPU usage (IMHO) so we can find a happy mix or do either or. That is up to the user

Hello everyone!

I have been crunching with WCG for three (Ish) years now. It is very similar to F@H most of us have or are doing (In that it is using our computers as volunteers for Science). The folks over @ 411Overkill introduced it to me and I owe them a big thank you for introducing me to it.

So after much debate (Over the last year I have hemmed and hawed) and the new changes to the F@H as we know them today. I have decided to start a team here and plan to move half of my current systems from F@H to WCG.

The team name is WCG@EVGA. This way we are still helping Science and promoting our Team Pride in EVGA at the same time.

I have been in Communication with EVGA and got permission to do so before this thread was even started. They are NOT sponsoring this. The exact words from the person I contacted with EVGA are..."If you wanted to start another distributed computing team, by all means do so (the F@H team wasn't started by us!), but official EVGA backing would be a ways off."...

Keep in mind that they did not when F@H was started by another member on these very forums. So if there is enough members here that would like to participate and get more members or friends involved they will create it's own Category.

I want to make this point perfectly clear. Under no circumstances am I doing this to keep folks from F@H. Quite the opposite. I am doing it from my own personal desire to give back to our future. And at the same time have options available to myself as changes out of my control in any of these programs will not keep me from helping. So I am seeing it as a way to continue to give. And spread that giving out in a productive/positive fashion.

As for the idea of this if we expand Team EVGA around it...

I like to explain it like this...

  • Some times a Football team is one dimensional... And they are the best at it. Then they find the need to become Multidimensional...
  • That my friends is what we have done here... We are now a Multidimensional...

Is this something you would like to participate in? Should we go for it and build a team?

And their front page...

BTW... The main reason I support what they are doing is quite simple. They offer a wider range of causes that any one person can choose to support. They are currently offering Ten different types and have already successfully completed NINE!!

You certainly have me thinking about this AB and it flows with other donations my wife and I have done for years (World Vision, etc).  I'm going to seriously consider this, but need to some time to read about it.  FAH is not the end-all to donating and it is very good to see that EVGA has no issue with forming up another type of Folding Team for those that are so inclined.

I have already read some of their material and I like it. I could easily be convinced to join a team for that program.

I already posted to see if anyone else was involved in another Distributed Computing Project, so I would certainly join up for this.

Just an FYI as this question was raised earlier in another thread...

Not all projects have jobs for GPU's... WCG is not a one size fits all. They have many options. And there is a large amount of users using the WCG with a plethora of knowledge.... Even on GPU's...

    Our Team # is... 28262
    • Create a log in (Like you do here @ EVGA) (Link)
    • Here is their "Official" installation instructions. Or you can follow mine below...
    • Go to "Device statistics" (Right side of screen) install the program (Top right of your screen select download)
    • go back to your log in.....
    • After the Install, check the box to "Launch their BOINC Manager"
    • During the set up screens you will be asked to attach to a project...choose The World Community Grid
    • You will also be asked to sign in...use the name and pw that you used when registering for the WCG.
    • The BOINC client once installed will download work units from one of the ten available projects :
    • Once the BOINC manager downloads the work units and starts crunching them you can choose the Advanced settings.
  • Go to the location where you downloaded the BOINC Windows Installer (it will be named something like: wcg_boinc_#.##.##_windows_intelx86.exe )
  • Double-click to run the installer, and follow the prompts that appear.

    Click "Run"
Note: Please notice the Publisher is University of California, Berkeley

    Click "Next"

Select "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click "Next"

    Click "Next"
If you would like to install the agent as a service, click advanced button. It is recommended to then check all 3 boxes.

    Click "Install"

    Click "Finish"

  • When the installer is finished, the BOINC Manager will run automatically, and should automatically log in you in to World Community Grid.
  • If the User Information dialog (below) appears, just enter your Member Name and Password, and click "Next"

  • You should be now be attached to the World Community Grid project.

If I can't find a project that I like for my GPU's, I can fold them for FAH once I get some reason to turn on and run my I7's again.

I'm still undecided about leaving FAH completely.  However, I do like the idea of being able to pick my fights.  Something FAH doesn't allow you to do.

    Pretty exciting!

Everyone has their own wants/needs/goals/desires. My view is this portion of our team can compliment F@H. And allows more choices for not only a member, but their individual systems. So in my mind this is a win win, as everyone can decide how much of any of the program(s) they want to help with.

Is it about points? No. This program takes a lot of processing time to get points like we are used to with F@H. So it kind of weeds out those that like the points and not the cause. I am introducing this for the causes and options they offer.

Do not get me wrong though!!! I love points as it is the visual way for me to see the positive impact I am making. It just happens to be a few points per unit instead of thousands...

    That is the intent...
