Is it a fresh install of W7?
You know there is like 500+ updates? (might be a high number, but still there is a lot)
It takes a while to scan for the updates, especially on slower hardware (not that I think you have slow hardware). It usually takes me a few day to get 100% updated.

Make sure you installed all your hardware drivers, it may be looking for a driver or something it can't find..How long has it been checking for updates anyway?..It's been known to take 2 or 3 hours or more, even 8 hours or so (overnight), just let it run..Something that might help is downloading and installing Service Pack 1 (advanced) from a USB flash drive first, but that might take an hour or so..I don't remember it ever taking so long for me before until fairly recently, I think Micro$oft is intentionally tormenting/punishing Win7 users these days.

If you haven't done so install all of your motherboard drivers and associated motherboard accessory drivers.

There is a slight bug with some of the more recent updates. According to what I have observed there is a condition where the windows update installation client does not recognize the proper certificates and stalls with a search loop. There is a combination of KB updates (you can download them separately) that, in combination, corrects this problem. The two updates seem not to relate to it but they do happen to fix this particular issue for most systems. They are as follows:

KB3145739 - MS16-039: Description of the security update for Windows Graphics Component: April 12, 2016 - Remote code execution vulnerabilty fix for Windows. Download the appropriate file for your version of Windows.

KB3138612 - Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: March 2016.

Please install those two updates, one right after the other, then reboot. This should resolve your issue and allow further windows updates to be performed. I don't guarantee that it corrects this issue for all systems, just most that I have encountered. Hopefully it'll resolve yours.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 on my HP Envy.  Giving to my son and he wants 7.  When I ran Windows updates...I found that it took overnight to find and install the updates.  I think that MS is purposely slowing down the process for all older OS...saving bandwidth for Windows 10...plus maybe they think that if they mess with the process...you might jump to 10.

It's been slow for quite a few years. Since I built my PC in 2010, I have reinstalled W7 on average once per year. It took me days before I got all the updates installed. Reinstalling did get faster when I had SP1 and drivers already downloaded.

Fresh Windows Install and Windows Updates usually takes about 10 Hrs. With decent internet.

just read ms released a 'unofficial sp 2' ....
could be good, but don't see why they have us jump
through so many hoops to dl... they need to release
    official sp 2....

After every reinstall of Windows you need to install drivers in strict order from developer of your PC, or if you have saved image in Acronis or etc. - no problem!

After installing KB3138612 I am finally making progress on a fresh install. I tried installing several times without success before I tried reading the instructions and realizing I had to manually stop the Windows Update Service before running it. Installing my initial 268 updates now.

MS has a roleup for Win7, though it is not SP2 - may save you time (must use IE v6 or newer) Your version of IE needs to be updated before some of the updates will work, or use a different browser

I rechecked and I exagerated a bit. I only have 243 important updates installing now. I had them download but let me decide which to install and I scoured the list for the Windows 10 upgrade stinker and I didn't see it. I searched for update problems with a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 and it directed me to some MS bulletin. After I stopped the Update Service and ran it this PC just went to town snagging a bunch of updates to install. I think I got the KB number correct in my ealier post but the PC I upgraded for my nephew is on the floor and my mobility is limited because of some spinal injections I got on Thursday. I knew I had seen this post a while ago and I'm glad it was easy to find. Thanks guys.
