Why on Earth would you need 8GBs? If you game you only really need 4GBs at max if your playing at a 2560x1440 resolution. I am sure most will not be playing at 4K. If you are then 6GBs is good. Also as far as I know I have not seen any consumer editing programs that go over 4GBs either.

Okay, so how are we going to have a 6gb on a 980 if it's a 256bit interface?

It's difficult to say what those crazy engineers at EVGA are up to so keep an eye on the EVGA website in the months to come.

I would like at least 8GB too.  I'll take 16GB if they've got it.  Then I'll buy two of them.  And ... it's not always a matter of need.

^^^^^Exactly, ppl are gonna have to wait for monts and into next year, to get the stuff they may want. Right now Nvidia want to make money on their Vanilla GPUs.

Shadows of Mordor requires 6GB of vRAM for Ultra textures to be enabled @ 1080. We'll probably start seeing this for super high quality textures in the future more often. I'd say I would love to have a 8GB or better card, but I'll be stuck with my 4GB 970 for at least 2 years because I don't believe in upgrading yearly or more is wise. Though I wouldn't mind if eVGA offered a step up to a 8GB one hint hint .

I'm running at 4k myself, so I'm wondering if 4GB would be enough for some things, and while 8 GB may be more than needed given atm more than 4 GB may be useful.

4GB is already necessary for some games at sub-4k resolution, and for many games at 4k. I'd much prefer more headroom myself (6 or 8GB) but I am betting such a variant won't be available until next summer at the earliest.

Not really, my buddy is gaming @ 4k with two 780s comfortably averaging 60-80 fps in most games.

come on now. for longer term use at very high resolutions then going for 8gb would make sense for SLI setups. 2gb was enough 3 years ago but was surprised and then 3gb was supposedly enough but it actually is not anymore for max settings . and even right now we see SHADOW OF MORDOR recommending 6gb of vram for Ultra settings.

Shadow of Mordor will NOT require that much VRAM if they want 99% of PC gamers to play the game, Only 780, titan, titan black, have that VRAM

I'm going to speculate that EVGA will be one of the first, if not the first to come out with a 980 8GB version. I think they came out with the 780 6GB a few months before anyone else did right?
I would even like to see a 8GB version of a overclocked 970, since it almost reaches 980 benchmarks. Watch them come out with a 8GB classified 970, with their own ACX 2.0 version of the silver Titan reference blower style cooler that everyone loves, and with a 8 phase power pcb design.

I Myself am pretty curious if that 4gb and 8gb rumor will hold up myself.
It seems to *me* that anyone trying to put 8gb of vram on the 256-bit bus
and it actually be functionable/accessible, regardless of bigger L2 Cache...
is going to have a hell of a time. I may be wrong though, time will tell i guess.

GTX980 happens to be faster than the 6GB Titan Black, until nVidia succeeds their Titan to keep appeal, don't hope/assume a GTX980 8GB model is even planned-- unless vendors like EVGA think you'll pay more to cover the loss of a premium.  To answer your question, how much are you willing to pay?  The fact is right now AMD has no competition to GTX980 at 4GB reference, don't foolishly convince yourself you can afford an 8GB GTX980-- you might as well wait for the rumored 12GB Titan Black.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

NVIDIA Maxwell premium model must be launched with 512bit and 8GB.
That's necessary because and AMD will launch their second model with 512bit and that can influence on performance of premium models lot.
    I wait such NVIDIA card.

I think the average bit rate for Gddr5 memory is 256, and that it caps at a max of 374 or so. Don't forget that the consoles, ps4 & xbox one have even lower memory bandwidth and they fully utilize the maximum about of memory aloud to them for graphics (4.5 - 5GB). Actually everything higher than 256bit in the previous GPU generations was a waste, because just now are the GPU's processing power finally catching up to the Gddr5's memory bandwidth. That's why it will still take a SLI setup of GPU processing power to be able to efficiently make use of 8GBs of memory. Plus in SLI each card has its own 256bit to make use of sharing the 8GBs. So lets say you SLI three 980s, thats 256bit X 3, giving it a 768 bit bus transfer rate to use the 8GBs.
