I have been doing what research I can. I have run the compatibility software from Microsoft.

Their site says I need:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
    RAM:              1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space:              16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

I know I have the disk space and ram along with plenty of CPU power.

My real concerns are:
1. "with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2" for the CPU (does the X58 have options in the BIOS for this?) The diagnostics seem to indicate that the CPU was fine but some options not enabled. The manual for the motherboard did not give me full details about that.

2. Do the GTX 260 video cards support the "WDDM driver".

Motherboard EVGA X58 ATX
CPU Intel i7 920
Dual Graphics Card EVGA GTX260 Core 216
Appreciate any help... I think I am fine for Windows 7 and can always fall back on going that route if I have to.

Thanks in advance!

PAE = Physical Address Extensions 36-bit for the 920
NX = Execute Disable Bit *Yes* for the 920
SSE2 = Instruction Set Extensions SSE4.2 for the 920

Regards, Question 2 on Video cards.  Yes, the Directx 9 nVidia 2xx (thus 260) is supported by W8.1

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 will work for the X58 and a majority of the drivers for that motherboard are in the Windows DVD.

SKY2PLAY and RJohnson11,

Thank you both these are exactly the answers I have been trying to pin down before sinking money into the upgrade.

I am going to install Windows 8.1 first and make sure everything is working as it should, then I am going to drop in an the 12gb Crucial Ballsitix memeory. Since XP won't recognize that much, I figured that was the best order to do it.

Yes I am... so a nice clean build as well since there is no upgrade path for XP to 8.1

I picked up a system builder Windows 8.1 from Microcenter this afternoon.

Can confirm. Same setup minus the GPU. I've had no issues whatsoever- mobo or cpu.

I have almost this exact build myself and am currently running Windows 8.1 with no issues.  You'll be fine.

All is great so far... been busy and spent all day yesterday standing in line at a horror movie convention... BUT I did get to meet Bruce "Ash" Campbell! Photo and couple of autographs, so long day but so worth it!  If you don't know... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0132257/

Back to the PC...8.1 installed, upgraded to 12gb ram 1.5 volt. I did not think my current 3gb at 1.6 volt would play nicely, so I left those out.

Downloading 3DMark to run a test since I pulled the rig apart to do some cleaning.

And The Walking Dead is on tonight in a bit.

Thanks again!

Nice!  Glad to see everything's up and running.  I've been using the X58 and 920 since 8 and 8.1 came out with no issues.  Well, after upgrading to 8.1, I had to reinstall the chipset and RAID driver, and then it's been relatively smooth sailing.

I didn't need the chipset or RAID drivers, only the USB 3.0 drivers.

Should have said "movies"... its an all horror movie convention...

Like a comic convention for horror fans... a few from The Walking Dead have been there the past several years now. Saw Scott "Hershal" Wilson, seemed very fan friendly.

Ash is the character from the Evil Dead trilogy.  The third is my favorite.

1. Evil Dead
2. Evil Dead 2
3. Army of Darkness
