Being that I've had my Z87 (ATX) board for 3 months now, would EVGA be able to step it up for Z97 equivalent? If possible, that would be nice. I remember when y'all did that with the 680i's for the 780i boards.

If they said yes, it would be under 90 days as a typical step up.

Unless I'm missing something big, what exactly do you need from Z97 that the 87 doesn't have? From all reports nothing has really changed sans the number...

The key thing that Z97 offers that Z87 doesn't is the range of more CPU options that Intel plans to release soon. I know it may not mean much to you, but after keeping a motherboard for less than 3 months and finding out another one will release that has a little more offer, I kind feel like I wish I would've waited a little longer, Ijs.

I wish I knew... From what I'm hearing, Haswell refresh will work with Z87 boards by way of BIOS update. Other than that, Z97 has no significant difference from Z87.

You guys might want to contact EVGA directly or ask a EVGA team member such as Jacob. There is alot going on at EVGA according to Jacob (Torq, X99, supposed 800 series etc.) So there is a chance they might miss this forum.

Devils Canyon will not be compatible with Z87. There are other advantages to Z97 over Z87.. I also believe the 800 series has been delayed.

Are you sure? Correct me if I'm wrong, but what you're saying is Haswell refresh a.k.a. Devil's Canyon won't work with Z97's? Also after this supposed BIOS update releases it's supposed to enable Z87's the capability of using them.

edited haha... There is a Haswell refresh and Devils Canyon two separate chips. At least the K series devils canyon is not compatible with Z87. This is all from sources with review samples and my reading but I couldn't tell you 100%.

That's not fair because K processors can't work, it's only question of BIOS and nothing else, physical compatibility is OK 100%.
I bought Z77 as new chipset first month when Ivy show up, now 20 months later we have 2 new chipsets, Z87 is past and now Z97 is actual.
Goodbue mainstream, it was nice experience but no thanks, graphic card I will not pay to Intel better more for 2 or 4 cores more.

For STEP UP on our Z87's.

I would guess if they did, we would have to upgrade to the high end board, there not going to give us FTW's when their the same price as our old boards.

I called EVGA last week. I can't remember who I spoke to, but they told me that after EVGA rolls out with the Z97's, anybody who registered their Z87 board would eligible for the Step-Up. Although the guy never gave me any specifics on when this Step-Up "roll call" would take place, I'm confident they'll pull through for us.

I have, but I have not installed it yet. Waiting on the 4790K launch before I finish the build.

I'm seeing chatter on some forums from folks who say the 4970K is available at Microcenter for around $350-$360.

From what I've read 87 chipsets will be compatible with the haswell refresh cpu's with a bios update.
Devils Canyon will not be compatible with Z87. There are other advantages to Z97 over Z87.. I also believe the 800 series has been delayed.

    DC will compatible with Z87

When Broadwell-K comes by Jan/Feb 2015, it will only work with 9-series chipsets, so while Devil's Canyon will work with 8-series chipsets, I wouldn't think Intel would allow 8-series chipset users all the flexibility and no reason to get their 9-series chipset boards.  Unfortunately, there aren't many (yet, if any) SATA Express drives out (unless that's what M.2 is).

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].
