Why doesn't the front HDMI port on the 980 Ti VR EDITION work with the Oculus Rift?

I have installed an EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti VR EDITION card in a brand new PC. I'm running driver version 364.72 and there were no previous cards or drivers installed in the system. The card works and runs an Oculus Rift CV1 perfectly, as long as I plug the HMD into the rear HDMI input on the card. But if I plug the HMD into the front HDMI port, it gets no picture. The Oculus application recognizes the headset (I can see what it's trying to display via screen mirroring on my monitor) and I even get audio from the Oculus application through the built-in headphones... but there's NO picture in the headset. I disconnect the Rift I can plug my monitor into the front HDMI port, and the monitor runs just fine! So there's definitely some issue with the card supporting the Rift.

What's going on? The whole point of this product is that it's supposed to run a VR headset off the front HDMI port.

Did you try seeing if it uses the front HDMI as a different monitor ? So you may need to change it in settings

It doesn't as far as I can tell. No other monitor options show up in the settings.

I am having the same problem. It's definitely not the HDMI extension cable because I tried plugging that into the rear HDMI port and my CV1 into the extension and everything worked fine. So something is definitely wrong with the rear HDMI port when it comes to CV1 support.

You might want to submit an online support ticket with EVGA . I did that, and after the support tech had me try several things like plugging directly into the front bay on the card, he ended up escalating the case to be reviewed for a fix. There are more people reporting this issue here and on other forums, and if enough of them submit tickets we're more likely to get the problem fixed.

Hello and Welcome to the Forums

I apologize for the inconvenience you are having with this issue. One thing you can try is to open the side panel to your PC case and unplug the front bay HDMI port from the card and then plug the CV1 HDMI cable directly into the card and see if that works.

Tried that no dice. I'll open a support ticket.

Hello.  I am having the same issue with my new Rift CV1.  I too have submitted a support ticket and referenced this thread.  Hope to find a resolution soon, it's the whole reason I bought the card in the first place!

Thank you for opening the Ticket. I also experienced the exact same behavior with the Oculus DK2.  It turns on and displays an image for less than 30 seconds and then turns into snow. I was waiting until I got my CV1 to open a ticket. That's about a month out though so I am quite curious if the front HDMI port is working for anyone.

    Bcanaugh,
There are like 10 people who just complained that the card's HDMI doesn't work. I don't think it's their motherboard man. Definitely a problem with this particular model. There is also another thread about this same issue as well.

Oh that thing... Here we go again...  If that's the case then that might be the problem actually. I forgot that Oculus doesn't have the right support right now to make their product work in a lot of users' PCs, for those that have the Asmedia USB 3.0 controller.

Okay but we are talking about the HDMI port. I can plug the USBs into either the drive bay USBs or two other 3.0 USBs I have on the front. I have an Asus Maximus Hero VIII Motherboard with fully updated drivers that is only a few months old. The USBs don't bear into it. It is only the front HDMI that doesn't work no matter where the USB cables are plugged in. The back HDMI works fine with no issues. The converter to HDMI in the back works with the DK2 with no issues as well. It is only the front HMDI that doesn't work.

Have to submit an RMA and let them ship you another one. I don't see any other way around it sir.

Well since it seems to be every unit right now I think I will wait for their answer. There is no point in getting another one if all of them don't have a front port that works with Oculus Rift.

I understand that you're wanting to use the front port, and if you use the back ports, it defeats the purpose of why you bought that 980TI edition in the first place. You could just get a little longer HDMI cable, and go from the back port, and just call it a day, for now at least.

Just received my RMA'ed card and it's still having the same problem with the CV1 :(
tested front hdmi to monitor -> no problems
tested CV1 to back HDMI -> no problems
tested CV1 to front HDMI -> no video.  Oculus software detects HDMI is plugged in and no issue, but no video at all.  Sound works (assuming this comes through USB, however)

Will update my support ticket in a moment
