Why are you upgrading the 1080 over a Titan X SLI Setup?

I currently have two EVGA Titan X's in SLI. I want some user feedback on why you are upgrading to the 1080 graphics cards. I also want to know wither or not you would you still upgrade if you still had Titan X's in SLI?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of not upgrading or upgrading with the 1080 I've come to the conclusion that some online reviews said I'd get a 20% increase in performance over the Titan X. I have SLI is it really worth it or should I pass on it and wait for the NVIDIA's Big flagship product to arrive?

Wait unless you are impatient and have to have it now.

The 1080 Ti or 10 series Titan will, like the 900 series, blow away the 1080.

My overclocked 980 Ti is ~10 to 15% slower than an overclocked 1080, and is within spitting distance of a stock 1080. If you overclock your TitanX's, you'll be in the same situation.

Some reasons to go to 1 card - SLI scaling is terrible/doesn't work for many games - and a single 1080 will consume a lot less power.

^this is truly the only reason I would upgrade from SLI titan X's to a single 1080.

Great feedback guys. Yes, I will wait for a true Titan series flagship card and pass on the 1080 NVIDIA always pulls this same technology roadmap with their cards. I'll sell both cards and get the one beast that's the final release based on the gpu architecture when it's tapped out before their next gen release of cards. That away I'm not lollygagging around. I can make my final purchase count and really mean something for the long run.

You should be set for a while.  For games that don't take SLI well, you would still get good performance out of 1 Titan X.  The 1080s are hot now and all but I would stick to what you have.  You can revisit this once the 1080 Ti comes out or when the new Titan comes out and compare them again.

That is just the thing. You wait for the big monster to hit. Then what happens? You are lucky to get a full year worth of use out of it. If that. Then the all new one launches. It just never ends and is a complete money grab. If people have money to waste and play that game. Fine. Obviously it works and the market is their for that. But, not me. I will ride out this 1080 and get a full 2 years worth until the next gen hits with Volta. Unless Volta hits with in the first half of 2018 then that is less then 2 years worth of use for the 1080.

How is he lucky? He has Titans and he is waiting for the Pascal Titan, which as everybody said, is going to blow the 1080 out of the water. He's doing the right move. If he really wanted to, he could wait till Volta comes out, and then get his true money's worth. When you said you only get a full year worth of use of it... I took that as being able to use the Titan until the 1080 came out. Ok. but when does the Pascal Titan come out?

I'm content with my 980 Ti performance and am skipping the 1080 completely. Waiting for the "Ti" version to come out. I would say if you're happy with what FPS you get then I wouldn't bother with the 1080.

I will never understand people who will dog on SLI performance saying "Some games don't use SLI".

As if its a pain to get SLI to work with a none-profile game? NO its not.

    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=379960 <-- Example.

There is really only a handful of games that don't take advantage of SLI. While many people will argue the crap that SLI has compatibility issues, unless you know absolutely nothing about SLI, its not hard to create you're own custom profile for SLI.

I did it with Final Fantasy XIV, Fallout 4, DOOM, etc. It's not hard and generally takes minimum effort.

Now as far as OP, Personally... the Titan X was never a worth-while card imo. 2 970's Overclocked will put it in the same realm as a Titan for less. There really is no point in the titan X other than an insane amount of v-ram and an insane price. Most people who buy the Titan X generally do so for bragging rights but performance wise, and in gaming it's a pointless card that fits more so to people who think the $1000 price tag is worth it.

It was easily swept aside with the 980 Ti, for nearly a fraction of the cost, as its been every time nVidia releases the Titan so far.

    1080 is cheaper, faster, better.

I don't need the latest and greatest of new shiny GPU/CPU that comes on the market.  I do major upgrades every 3-5 years depending on the components.  I'm really looking forward to you guys who are going to ditch your Titan X SLI setups so I can scoop up another Titan X SC for SLI.  Have plenty of power supply to spare for another card and for me Titan X SC SLI will last for the next few generations of GPUs.

I have Titan X in SLI and briefly considered the 1080 as well....very briefly. I'm staying put.  The Titan X in SLI still soundly drubs a single 1080.  And I'm also going to be headed down the road that Nvidia is already pushing I will be getting away from SLI after many years of SLI setups. Although I've never had any issues with SLI over the years, I like the idea of single card use as it simplifies things in my water loops.  The idea of far less power and heat sounds good to me now. (I know, I'm getting old).  I will instead be looking towards the 1080Ti for a single card solution and drop the Titan Xs into the rigs of my other family members.

I've had Titan level SLI for several generations, and that was preceded by top end Crossfire set ups. These cards all trickled down to my family so there was always a nice hand me down path for high end SLI cards. But now the winds off change are blowing and SLI I'm suspecting is on the down side.  My kids have grown and my hand me down chain is going away so it's even more support for a single card solutions in the future.

That all said, there is no way at the moment I would consider moving to a single 1080 over Titan X in SLI.  And 1080s in SLI isn't where the future is going.  So my opinion is to hold out for 1080Ti or the Titan variant and go single card.
