Why I fold?
I gotta say that I fold for my grandmother, who died of Parkinson's before I was even old enough to remember her. I fold for my 21 year old cousin who was diagnosed with cancer (who's thankfully recovered) but missed three years of nursing school because of it. Just today I now fold for TotalBiscuit, who after having been in the clear has been diagnosed with several spots on his liver, with a 2-3 year life expectancy.

I recommend to everyone here, watch the Ken Burns documentary Cancer: The Emperor of all Maladies on Netflix. It is a great reminder to why we fold.

First off, much respect for those lost, no mathematical algorithm can bring them back, but maybe we can help stop the next from going. I'm thankful that I know no one currently suffering that need this type of scientific assistance, but the day is coming, sooner or later. Science takes years to verify and years for R&D and years more for clinical trials, we as people need as much head start as possible. On a lighter note, I'll also promise that if I win the Powerball I'll run at least a half dozen hardcore folding rigs. I fold for all. -Jason

I fold for my sister that died from Uterine cancer that was malignant and ate up her body.
I fold for my Mother whom no longer recognizes her only son.
I fold for anyone that has to deal with any life threatening diseases.
I also for selfish reasons, fold for myself and my Bladder cancer that I have to fight everyday against.

That's not selfish at all James. I fold for my Father who died many years ago from a cancer he beat, only to have it come back with a vengeance a year later. I fold for my cousins that died at a young age from cancer. I fold for my mother who has Alzheimer's,and dementia. I have witnessed many times the wicked path, Alzheimer's takes the victim and also the families. I also fold for my teammates, that I have come to know through folding and have become quite fond of.  I fold for a hope of some day, we no longer have to fear a diagnosis of cancer.

I fold in memory of my uncle Jeremy who passed away two weeks ago, he was 78, so he led a long life in comparison to many of the people you all fold for. Uncle Jeremy was a pretty inspirational person to me, I didn't get to spend much time with him at all, but he was someone who I greatly respected and liked. He was born in a very small farming community in New Zealand, the youngest of three brothers (my father being the middle son), he graduated from Canterbury University in New Zealand, and went to Oxford where he gained a PhD in Physics. He spend most of his life in the US as an academic, even having some time with CERN.
He was mentally very active, and physically also very active, greatly enjoying running half marathons. Parkinson's took his life.
For the living I fold for my daughter Kim, she is healthy and amazing. As a father my role is to keep her safe, folding is something I can do that may assist that.

Karma. You can never have too much karma. I'm not buddhist, but the basic concept of karma applies in my religion as well. If you do something good for others, then it is rewarded back to you.
And if I ever develop Alzheimers maybe by the time I get it they will discover a treatment for it with this kind of work.

Hello again,
One of my good friends I'm still in touch with from middle school as a kid just this winter BEAT cancer, 10 years clean.
Four months later; re-diagnosed with a different type of cancer. Personally I truly believe in the saying 'God Helps Those Who Help Themselves", let's keep on it folks. Even if only 5% of this data helps our friends and family someday, for a cancer patient, 5% better odds is never a bad thing.

At my core I guess I fold because I'm just angry. Angry that cancer took both my grandpas (stomach & colon), angry at hearing people at church have gotten bad diagnoses, angry at reading on Facebook how a friend of a friend lost their battle. It's not just cancer either - this runs the gamut from ALS, MS and Parkinson's to Alzheimer's/Dementia. I'm angry that friends, family.......hell, anyone really, has to live with and suffer through these diseases and I'm hoping that within my lifetime, the results of this will pay off.

I fold for the same reason I donate blood. The same reason I put my loose change in the Salvation Army bucket (and the Ronald McDonald House bin at McDonalds).
I fold because it does good, and because I can.
Fortunately I haven't lost anyone close to me from disease.

I may have posted before, but I'll post this in case I forgot.
I fold for my extended family. My Grandfather died of Cancer and one of my Uncles suffers from Parkinsons. I also want to help find cures for other diseases as well. Every little bit helps in my opinion.
