I am building a machine to use with an HTC Vive. I am thinking about the 1080 FTW or the SC. What would you recommend? I am not going to do any custom overclocking on it and will probably just stick with the preset settings. Is it worth going to the FTW? What is the advantage of having 2 vs. 1 BIOS? Any help would be appreciated.

If you aren't doing any overclocking, the SC should be just fine. The 2nd bios is usefull for extreme over clocking by modifying the bios itself. The RGB led is the other FTW feature you might like. Otherwise the FTW has a better overclock out of the box. So if you need the extra few GPS that gets you it would help in VR, but the difference would be minimal.

Okay, thanks! I think I'll stick with the SC then (if I can ever find it in stock!). I think that the SC uses less power as well, which would be a bonus.

Also don't use the DisplayPort with the Vive, it is still not working with the 1070/1080

Really the only notable difference between the two is that the FTW has the option to change the LED color. The difference between stock clocks will not be noticeable.

There's more to it than that but for the OP's needs, very likely that and the fact it's about an in larger and would need a second 8 pin.

For people OC'ing, dual BIOS + more phases is always a plus.

Okay, thanks! Do you think it's even worth it for me to get the SC vs. the regular $619 one? What would be the advantages of getting the SC?

Depends on your overall setup. If you might be close to an import cutoff ie 60fps but still a few fps below, generally the SC cards can get ~6fps.

I haven't tested those differences so the amount may not be accurate.

For VR, you may want as much GPU muscle as budget allows since the refresh rate is higher than your standard monitor.

The 1080 should be overkill for this generation of VR headsets in general, (seems like most of the games are built for the 970 right now,) but it does get you some headroom for maxing settings in future games and the more power the better if you're planning on using Vorpx.
SC vs standard ACX 3.0?  Price and performance difference are small, get which ever one you can find first!

CPU: i7 5820k
GPU: 970 SC (soon to be 1080 ACX)
Displays: BenQ W7000, HTC Vive
Storage: 2x 1TB SSD's, 2x 300GB Velociraptors and a 3TB 7200 RPM drive (no RAID)
RAM: 32GB

a 1080 overkill for VR?

With Supersampling even a 1080 has not near enough power and yes Supersampling is really noticeable in VR and brings the HMD up to a whole new Level.

I consider a 970 as pure Minimum for VR

Is it possible to use supersampling in many VR games?  I didn't think it was.
Vorpx you can set fairly arbitrary resolutions, so you can do a sort of supersampling (the Vorpx driver does the downsampling/morphing.)

Thanks!  Looks like someone's got a utility that removes the need to manually edit files:

By the time my 1080 step up comes Valve may have put the setting into SteamVR..

Doubt it's worth playing with on my 970.

On my 970 using a value of 2.0 (Oculus Rift Debug tool) was too much for even Oculus Home. The 1080 does pretty well with a value of 2 in many games but in some games there is a slight judder so I turn it down a bit. Supersampling isn't game changing but the extra clarity is awesome.

You're kidding right? Once "newer" applications start to come alive for VR, the 1080 will hardly keep up. Not quite sure how many times we have seen this repeat as newer applications are on the market, GPUs start becoming slower trying to render the images at good FPS. Give it a year or 2 and the 1080 won't be good anymore. Might be over exaggerating over the "year or 2". make it 3 years. lol
