Sometimes you gotta turn the blind eye when needed. I do read what people need to get off their chest but if its jibber jabber, then I take out the horse blinders. To date I 'm still having fun folding. I get the thrill of beating the crap out of hard earned expensive brand new electronic equipment that I can't really afford, lol. It's good to see alot of members still has not lost sight of the main concept, A CURE. Oddly enough I do sometimes think in the back of my mind, am I helping someone develope the T-Virus, hahaha. Until then fold on little doggies.

This might help but I almost stop folding due to the cost of funding gpu electric juice. I found a happy medium and swithed to smp big adv. Now my wife is happier, no need to call the divorce lawyer. I beleive folding is like a 401k. It's not how much you fold, just fold something.

Good job everyone and may the fold be with you....

Well I know I said I was coming back in the last few months but I've had computer issues and until today I didn't know how or when they'd be fixed. Today my wife to be gave me 500 bucks to use on a new computer for and early christmas gift, so I'll be back to part time folding as my power bills permits.

Now to wait for the parts and see how a i7 2600k on a evga z68 with my gtx570 can fold. See you all soonish.

Tank,
I have tried to get friends and family envolved, they just laugh at me and tell me how stupid i am for wasting time and electricty and my money. Even the guys in my gaming clan have given up. I am out of ideas...
I too am tired of trying to keep my computer up to date to stay in the top 100 of the evga folding team... Cant afford to build a new x79 system at 3 to 5k for what i want, really cant afford to upgrade my cpu and gpu at 1200 to 1600$.
Hard to keep myself folding let alone get new folks to start folding.

It seems to be more complicated to fold now than we I started just a few short years ago.  Losing BIG ADV in Windows, inconsistent work units, etc. I think are some big reasons people have left.  It took me days to figure out how to get my 670 to fold properly with Jedi's tracker, and this is after I was somewhat of a folding veteran.  We all have a fixed amount of time and folding has become a very hands on hobby.  I bought a 3930k recently wanting to get back to BIG ADV in Linux, but I just don't have the time to get it all setup.  It is very involved now, not as simple as when I first started.

well for one thing... a 3930k won't get you into Bigadv anymore
Bigadv is now reserved for smp-16 or greater...ie 2p or 4p rig

and linux wasn't that bad to set up - I used linux mint and set up a dual boot

wow, thanks for the heads up.  I guess that is my point, unless you have time to keep on top of all the changes you get left behind, rather quickly.  I am still happy to fold for the cause, and of course for our team.  This community has been good to me when I need it.

I hear all of you, I haven't had the resources to keep up with bigadv's or even the 600 series. With my new baby and step daughter in college I just run what I can. I'll never make the top 25.
But, after a trip back east to see my grandmother I just run what I can for as long as she'll hold up.
That's what this team is about, giving what you can. Doesn't matter if it's 200ppd or 2 million. We do it for the betterment of mankind. Even though all of my friends think I'm nut and wasting money...my heart doesn't think so.

Madrias

I've kinda dropped off the face of the earth due to economic reasons.

To reduce power, I stopped folding, which helped a little.  Then the overtime went away.
To reduce cost, we dropped the cell phones, which helped a little.  Now hours are getting trimmed.
So now there's only one thing left to get rid of.  We're dropping the net here eventually, and so it'll be a long time before I can fold again.

Come February, look for the rising heatwave from the midwest, and you will see my return.

This fact is killing me, not literally of course, but it hurts to a point as our main form of contact will be lost, what about phone calls? you might say, international calls are costly neither of us can do it. It's going to be a long few months and Mad getting to the library when he can.

I miss folding and I want to fold but this build just won't do it without lagging to the point of locking up, plus it has/had a few other problems.
This build compared to my previous one was to boost my folding within what I could afford and manage, I even got myself a 2nd GPU for it. I had to take out a GPU because of BSODs. This was meant to be the more powerful better build as it was an upgrade though the parts (aside from the new GPU mentioned) were 2nd hand some previously owned by my brother.
The motherboard is fussy, my bro said he got it cheap due to opened box and light damage, on top of other problems as mentioned.

I'm keeping company with Madrias as much as possible atm though.
Sleep what's this sleep thing... I'm a little loopy from lack of ... Time difference bites

The larger things in life that are worth doing are seldom easy, require sacrifice and even might be ridiculed by some.  I've been fortunate that everyone I've encountered has said "that is very cool" when they hear about our Folding team and Folding in general.  That is not to say that they want to do it too, but I've yet to meet someone that didn't get what we are trying to accomplish.  Remember the old 80/20 rule regarding what percentage of people actually take the mantle to do things (especially when it involves donation of time, money, energy).  With Folding that ratio of participants willing to carry the mantle is even less.  For me, Folding is an act of love that hopefully will one day save lives (maybe even ours).  But at my age, I know that what I'm doing today may not come to fruit until after I'm gone and I'm absolutely OK with that.

I may have shared this before, but a pastor once told me "do what you can do" when I was worn-thin with extending my help with the church.  That statement has stuck with me because it didn't just mean take it easier.  It meant don't try to do everything, but do invest yourself in something.  This is one of my "somethings".  I watched what Alzheimers does to a person daily when my wife's Mom lived with us for 6yrs.  It is not easy to watch and even harder for the person that is afflicted with it, especially when it finally shuts down life (organ by organ).  When you get down about why you are here, the investment of time, money, etc.  Just remember that if we don't do this, who will?  The even smaller percentage of people that do it today after we quit?  I can't tell anyone what to do...that is for you to decide, but I know that I must do what I can do and right now by the grace of God, I'm blessed to do this.  All the best to everyone who has Folded at any point and those that can still do it.

I'm still hanging in there.  Doing what I can, when I can.  Even thou my equipment has been on a roller coaster ride, they are still folding.  Maybe once my equipment gets stablized, I will be able to conitune folding at a slower steady rate 24/7.

Re:Where did everyone go? 2012/09/06 20:50:52 (permalink)
Well I can say I'm back folding at last. Not at the boost I wanted or aimed for, I was aiming for x2 GTS 450's and another lil' 'secret weapon' for that small boost every so often be it a contest or that small boost that might assist in keeping this #1 team, as every point counts.

I'm only folding 1 GTS 450, my new one I got for my Birthday a few months back. I've learnt fast that though both 450's each one has it's little quirks and differences. I had to take my 2nd 450 (gifted to me by MrAsh last year) out as I kept getting BSOD's I don't think it's the GPUs fault, it's the fussy motherboard and probable bad slot.
I couldn't get my computer to fold with out it lagging or locking up and giving me crazy cursor, this was even after taking out the 2nd 450.
I spent yesterday trying different drivers and clock speeds and finally came up with a combination that has let me fold, granted I get a small touch of lag, but could say it's 95% better than what it was.

The other reason I got persistent on getting this computer folding yesterday was so that for the next 5 months or so I won't feel guilty about my rig being on all the time, as if not folding I always have it on for communication with Madrias.
As of Tuesday evening (4th sept, US time) Madrias' internet stopped so he's not going to be around except if he goes to the library, so I have my computer on all the time still as I don't know what day or when he'll get to the library, and I feel better that it's folding and doing something constructive while I wait.

It's day 3 and I'm already going stir crazy without Madrias, it's too quiet, I miss his company, making him laugh, his whacky laugh, his smile, and our idle chit chat, my 2nd screen is rather bland and boring without his face in the corner.
Argh! it's going to be a looong 5 months

Thanks Tex.
I will Tex, hopefully he gets his butt to the library soon.

I'm folding sporadically atm, I've started getting 7xxx WU's as of tonight, my computer struggles too much on them, locks up or gets too slow and I was told at some point they're hard on the computer, so I won't chance pushing this already touchy computer. I'll try again tomorrow (is late at night here in Aus) and see what WU's I get.

Well I'm not folding again, computer is being the pain in the butt it has been since it was built, problem after problem, and is down due to yet another problem.
Not to mention I kept getting if I recall correctly 76xx 75xx WUs that just made it run slow and neither gave much and took ags to fold.

I'm on my slow laptop with loose connectors to the screen joy .
I still haven't heard from Madrias, who told me he'd go to the library with his laptop and borrow their WiFi.

Sorry for the double post.

Shy.

Edit:
Thank you Zophar for your help, problem fixed .
Here's hoping my computer behaves itself for a few more months.

Well, I'm officially at the library, but they've got massive restrictions on programs signing in.  All stuff will have to be done through PM, cause Steam and Yahoo are blocked, as well as Skype and a lot of other programs.

It's gonna be a long few months...

I just came back yesterday after almost 3 years away.  Should be good for 40k ppd by the looks of things.  I may be able to get the funds together for a 4p folder before the end of the year as well, depending on some factors.  A lot of "if's" in the plan, but I'm trying.

It's not much but I just turned a 10k PPD CPU on. It's getting cooler but the temps are still killing me.

Yeah I hear ya.  After 3rd floor apartment living with non-central A/C I am finally in a house with a basement that is cool in the summer and damn cold in the winter.

And don't knock 10k ppd.  Every point counts (for the team and the cause!).
