Do you keep your rad until it leaks, a set time period, or until a better product is available?

I have some Hardware labs SR-2's I used for a few years, but they were also empty a lot of the time. Not sure if it's safe to keep using them.

    IMO it would be rare to see one of these fail to be serviceable. Understand their origins. They are modeled after car radiators and heater cores. Their weakest link would be there shells made of steel that could rust but the internals, made of copper and brass, are very durable, and corrosion free for decades. I recently sold, with confidence, a Thermochill PA 120.3 rad that was 12 years old and it performed as good as the day I got it even that steel case was it prime condition. However I did have to re-tap the fan mounting holes which should be considered another weak link or source of failure. Unless there is a factory defect I don't see one of theses leaking any time soon either unless there is a user malfunction like poking a hole in one of the tubes with a screw. Sitting on a shelf dry or filled is of no consequence that couldn't be remedied by a flushing. Unless standards change, like it did for the PA 120.3, Bottom line, I see no reason not to re-purpose rads in your inventory over and over for many builds to come. GL

    @OP
    the only rad I have ever retired was after like 6 years I think a solder joint popped and started to leak, otherwise no need.  You may outgrow it, but it really doesn't lose its abilities.  If it was open for a while, blow it out with air first then hot distilled water, and maybe a little white vinegar, but that is rarely needed.

    While your information is correct, I have to comment on one thing.  YOU SOLD A PA 120.3?!?!?!?!   (Yes, I am kidding)  Those are absolutely amazing old radiators.

    in general, that is one thing I love about water cooling, it works well and I can move most if not all of the parts from one build to the next.

    lol ya I hated to see the PA120.3 go but the fan spacing and 3/8gpt inlets were killing me 2 shrouds went with it too. If you hang off the back of a case they are still really very functional though.

    Shame to let a real classic go like that, that was the rad most others were compared to for a long time, and for good reason.  That should have been hung up on a wall and framed or something.

    The real shame would be sitting on a wall not being used when it's still perfectly good plus I wanted someone else to feel the love. On the other hand I still have my DFI Lan Party NF4 and EVGA NF680i A1 mobo's for some awesome Nvidia chipset classics.

    Yeah, I can see that point as well.  Hopefully they enjoy one of the best rads in history for its size.  And nice retro hardware you got there too.

    That's awesome! I`ve been running one of them old PA 120.3 rads on my system for over 6 years and it still does a really nice job. The only reason why I might ever consider retiring him would be to get more cooling capacity with a 480 or something like that.

    Them SR-2`s are some really solid ol rads. Would think they should perform very well for years to come.
