I was wondering what 4 way SLI is like.

Has anyone tried it with 4 Titan X's?

Are there any negative things to say about it purely from a performance perspective other then the obvious price?

What kind of power consumption are you seeing in typical gaming situations?

If water cooled, how much radiator do you need to cool such a setup?

4x SLI is completely a waste of money.  You get next to no additional scaling going past 3 GPUs.  You also occupy all the slots on your mobo so you can't run a sound card or 10-gigabit ethernet card or a PCI-e SSD or a raid card etc etc.

I see there is already a GTX Titan X 4 way SLI score on  Firestrike Ultra of 14605 as of typing this. That seems pretty high comparing to other systems. But this does not translate so well to real world gaming though right?

It mostly translates into massive debt and epeens, rarely into actual gaming performance.

Unless you are running an eizo 240hz (1080p)monitor, your refresh rate will stop you from seeing better, and at 2 way SLI, your graphics would be capped at ultra anyway. The other 2 gpus would actually be doing nothing but providing numbers in the corner of you screen (fps monitor) that you can see showing that after 144hz, since your screen can't display faster. At 4k,your current cap is 60, so pushing past that currently wouldn't actually do anything other than possibly cause tearing.

But a very cool looking space heater! I've always said, if you have the money why the hec not! Everytime I see a quad SLI setup, I must say it's a mild turn on.....

The correct asnswer for your question "What's 4 way SLI like?" is: "Orgasmically Nuclear"

3 of the games showed 0 gain from 4 way SLI.  Not surprising since there's probably little driver optimization efforts going into that since how many people buy 4 GPU's?

That's mainly the only place I can see needing 4 gpu's in a case- non-SLI compute performance.  Or if you happen to need to drive 24 monitors.

I never heard of folding before. That seems like a noble way to use it if you have it. I gots to try that out. The thing is, I can afford to buy 4 cards and Nvidia said that I can return it within 30 days even if I opened and installed it so...
I would not be able to run 4 cards on my Asus Deluxe though I am still within the returning period of that as well.
Maybe if 5K G-sync monitors come out it would start to make sense...

Folding is research for cancer and such, and is a great thing to be part of. I have 2 PC's that used to fold 24/7 for 330 days out of the year, and then I got my own power bill. Now I will run them occasionally, but won't be able to run 24/7 again. If you get a chance to set it up, you can also earn a few EVGA bucks to use on the EVGA.com store.

Yea I kind of noticed with my 5820 Overclocked to 4.4ghz Firestrike is saying that I am CPU limited with the 2 cards... What's the deal with that? I thought CPU bottlenecks were just a myth? Jk

Also it's cool that EVGA is involved with the folding program. I have more respect for them now.

So I just got my 3rd card in the mail... I really like it. Plug and play install and nice scores on Firestrike Ultra and Extreme, have not gamed yet. I just slapped on a overclock and not really fiddle wit it. ASIC score is again 65% area very similar to my other cards. Sorry about the horrible cable management but I plan to watercool right after this so didn't spend much time on it.

I just wanted to update. I gamed BF4 at 200% scale @ 1440P and Ultra no AA and I am getting about 90 FPS avg and with a overclock about 110 FPS average. That's quite a bump from the 60 FPS avg I was getting with the 2 cards. But, it still felt playable but choppy for some reason though. Actually my whole system feels kind of choppy now, even when I am just browsing the net. I don't know if it's because I have only 16gb of ram or more Nvidia updates need to take place or just some random hiccup. Perhaps it's the power supply?

I've experienced the same thing with 3-way SLI. 2-way SLI seems to be more smooth.

4x SLI is completely a waste of money.  You get next to no additional scaling going past 3 GPUs.  You also occupy all the slots on your mobo so you can't run a sound card or 10-gigabit ethernet card or a PCI-e SSD or a raid card etc etc.

Agree, and have had 4x SLI twice over the past 5-6 years.  Never again.

Mainly because the return on investment goes down with each card added, it's basically the following (and it's been this way for years through countless drivers and multiple generations of Nvidia cards):

1x Card = 1.00x performance of single card
2x Cards SLI = 1.75x performance of single card
3x Cards SLI = 2.25x performance of single card
4x Cards SLI = 2.65x performance of single card

Diminishing returns past a 2-card SLI make it something that only leaderboard chasers should pursue (and that's fine, whatever floats your boat, records are fun of course).

But aside from benchmarking software, you can load of BF4, Bioshock, etc, and you will get the exact fps gains on average as I've listed above. 4 cards don't even net a 300% fps gain.  But a 2-card SLI setup really does shine and maximizes value IMO.

Re: What's 4 way SLI like? 2015/03/26 19:10:00 (permalink)
I dropped down to 150% scaling and redid my CPU overclock and it got much smoother, which is better then my 2 card setup because I was only able to get to 120% scaling and still be really smooth. Still choppy at 200% scaling. Kind of worried because 200% scaling at 1440P is basically 4K no? Does this mean if I get a 4K G-sync monitor I am going to be choppy at Ultra no AA? So many variables and personal opinion though please take what I say with a grain of salt.

200% scaling at 1080p is 4k (1080x2=2160 or 200%) so you were at 2880 or 5k, not 4k.

200% scaling at 1080p is 4k (1080x2=2160 or 200%) so you were at 2880 or 5k, not 4k.

I'm so stupid. So I was already at 4k.... Embarrassing.
