I know the 2 980s will give better fps but  the titan x has like 12gb of memory vs 4gb

I personally wouldn't buy into a 980 anymore especially at 4K. Although the Titan X is almost twice as expensive, it's definitely more future proof especially with the 12GB VRAM. 2 Titan's are roughly the same speed as 3.5 980's and a single Titan is like 1.5 980's. There are also a handful of new games out there that only run 1 GPU as well. Some of these games you still can't even run at full 60 FPS on max settings even on a single Titan X (like Sniper Elite v2/Nazi army) so you're REALLY going to be hurting if you get a 980. If you have patience, I would try to wait for a AIO Titan X HYBRID to see if that comes out anytime soon. There's probably going to be a cut-down version of the Titan X as well in probably 3 months which would bridge the giant gap between the 980 & Titan X but that's your call. I waited 3 months for the AIO 980 Hybrid to come out but then the Titan X's came out of nowhere and couldn't wait anymore.
