What happen to all the reference 970s

    Technically, there are no "reference" versions of the 970's.  There are reference models of the 980's, but Nvidia left the basic designs of the 970's to each manufacturer.  
     
    For that reason, you'll have to be a little bit more specific.  Do you have the part number of your card?  For example, "04G-P4-1970-KR".  If not, is it a single-fan blower-type cooler, an ACX 1.0, or an ACX 2.0?  Is it factory overclocked or non-factory overclocked?

    Given that most of the 970's seem to be out of stock in a variety of stores, it's likely that retailers are waiting for a new shipment of 970's, including the card you're looking for.  Newegg supposedly last had these cards 11/27/14, so that likely means it's just out of stock at this point.
