LOL I just googled the web, because suddenly my PC was crashing and there was a really bad smell coming out of the machine. Once opened I already smell the problem... my evga titan died a dramatic death... I opened it to check what happened and I saw one of the 2 chips beside the ram called (*R33) completly cracked/burnt. The smell was really ugly, I hope its not poisonous :)... there was also a bronze colored liquid around the destroyed chip/elco whatever it is, I didn't touch it.

Sadly since I have used the custom bios from the internet for over a year now (the one from skynet or maarten dont remember)... which removes the TDP there is no warranty anymore anyway (so guys take care with this BIOS)!!

So when looking for replacement... I now found out that the Titan X has just been released... what a coincedence... maybe the card just wanted to get replaced finally :)

Is there any estimated release date for the hydro copper version of the titan x? But I guess we are still a few months away? I just don't want to buy a 980 hydro copper now if the other one is around the corner. So I could get a cheap graka meanwhile and wait for the titan x hydro.... if its not too far away.

Any news here?

    R22 is the inductor...

Does the Titan Hydrocopper waterblock have thermal pad over those?

Was that Titan or Titan Black?

It must still be under warranty though.

Also was the Water Block Pre-installed or did you install it?

It was the official EVGA Titan Hydro Copper (06G-P4-2795-KR)... and yes there was a thermal pad between the waterblock and the *R33 (water temperature at time of death was 37°C, GPU around 60°C).

It looks like that the inductor cracked and burnt on one side of the metal connection - it was loose after I opened the water block. I guess the problem is that the custom BIOS is removing the TDP limit and mybe this will also raise the "force" on the inductor?

I would be surprised though if it had still warranty.... but now this is over anyway for me as I opened the card and waterblock to see the cause of death on the board :(

I would contact eVGA and see what they say.  Just taking the waterblock off doesn't void the warranty, that is one reason people buy eVGA.  One of the only ways to void the warranty is by causing physical damage to the PCB.  This could go either way since you didn't personally do the damage, but it might have been the custom BIOS.  Even if it isn't under warranty, it might just be a fee to replace it which is better than just throwing it away.  Never hurts to try and see what they say.

Yeah good idea, I just did that... let's see what they say :)

Anyway hopefully the Titan X Hydro Copper will be available soon and also in Europe from EVGA... can't wait now... just installed a GTX 960 for the time being, as I need to leverage my 4k monitor at 60Hz... so no cheap cards were possible, but luckily I can sell it to a friend once I get the Titan Back or the new Titan X :)

I think you are mistaken.  The inductors sit up inside the cutout.  There is a thermal pad next to the inductor cutout which is for the MOSFETs.  But I do not believe there is supposed to be any thermal pad up inside that cutout.

    Yes, warranty void.

Yep you are right... those inductors don't have a thermal pad and they also don't get cooled - they sit in the cutout. Also it wasn't the big R22 it was the small R33 which got completly burned. I can also see alot of this copper smeary oil from the burnt inductor around the back of the cooling plate. I wonder where this comes from? Inside the conductor? - Still its strange why this happened? Is this related to the TDP limit? Shouldn't then many other people encounter the same problem? Especially air cooled cards on custom bios? I was running at +250Mhz core and +250Mhz RAM, not that much...

But surely the warranty is void, still I will send it back, maybe they show some mercy or can do it as goodwill or give me rabatt on new card - whatever... - we will see, after all its EVGA and I have a lot of EVGA products.

Oh interesting I just googled around and saw that I am not the only one with a burned R33 (memory)... there are several card owners especially from other brands too which suffered from burned R33's when folding or using the cards for a long period of time.

Really interesting... my game was running the whole day too idling - so it seems like those R33 seems to get hot over time and may burn in rare cases... Hmm....

    FYI

They have just sent me a full replacement of my graphics card... even though it had a custom bios and was completly opened by myself - I absolutely didn't expect they would do this on warranty! Hats off! Awesome and very fast service... At least now I know why I only buy EVGA stuff :)

Sorry to bump this old thread, but what exactly did you send them in the support ticket concerning your situation and custom bios? My R33 in L13 blew last night. :(

another reason why I tell everyone not to flash bios. That card could have lasted you 4-5 years but you wanted 5 more fps lol..

I actually just used it for lower idle fan speeds since I upgraded to ACX. I'm not K|NGP|N.

Didn't you know you can change fan speed through MSI afterburner, asus gpu tweak, or PX without touching bios?
