I've recently bought a EVGA GTX 960 SSC ATX2.0 2GB.
And I have recently noticed some noise coming from the card and decided to run benchmark.
I used the demo edition of the 3DMark, couldnt put up a link.
you can see the video if you search in youtube with:

EVGA GTX 960 weird noise

Can anyone tell me what is going on here??
The sound doesnt seem to happen when it is doing the Physics test..

Please help..:(

Coil Whine is unusual in the GTX 960, you should be able to request an RMA and probably get a better card. However, it's not the end of the world and doesn't affect performance or card life. However, I would attempt an RMA because it's not normal on a GTX 960 and it's free to get a replacement. To make an RMA, Goto Members Home tab and go down to My Products than View Details on your card and request the RMA from there. The RMA process is fairly simple, you can call EVGA for any help or questions regarding a RMA request. You can also call them regarding the issue, but I would just ask for the RMA. Coil Whine is normal on a GTX 970 but It shouldn't be an issue on the 960.

I got a replacement from the place of purchase, but the problem is, the replacement also does this....
So I thought it might be something with my other stuff, but when I ran the computer without the graphics card and only the intel hd graphics
this didnt happen, so I am assuming that there is something definitely wrong with the evga build of the gtx 960? or am I just out of luck?

It's mans effort to control electricity on a card that 4"x8". Basically what you hear from my understanding is a lot of volts flowing through a circuit or wire. This causes things to viberate and make a high pitch. It gets worse in these high efficiency/processing. Physics is unfortunate sometimes.

This noise is the new standard of PC parts, it shows performance!

The 960 was a huge performance flop in my opinion anyways. You're better off stepping up to something that can actually justify the coil whine. I mean the 960 runs the newest games on medium at 1080p and not very well to boot. Although stepping up becomes pricey in shipping and had to pay taxes twice since I live in California. Just return the card an buy a 970 or 980 an actually get something that will last into next year. (This is if money is of no matter to you, the 960 is a decent card if you're on a budget, I just don't see it performing well once true next gen games come out, as this card struggles to keep evolve going at medium already).

What kind of power supply do you have? Sometimes, not always, the power supply can be part of the problem. A bronze power supply won't supply clean power like a gold or platinum power supply, causing coil whine. This is why I ask what kind you have.

Also, try a "burn in" of the card. Download Unigine Heaven or Unigine Valley and set it to the max possible settings, then leave it running over night or as long as you can. This will allow the inductors to "burn in" or break in and possibly get quiet. Those are the two next steps, with the break in/burn in being the easiest and cheapest test first

This is the powersupply I have, I have brought it along with me from my previous pc as it was still good and compatible with my new pc parts.

Ok, try the burn in then. Just set the fans to run at 70% or higher, so it stays cool, and leave it be for the night or longer. That should at least reduce the coil whine for you.

I went from an MSI 960 that has no coil whine at all to a 970 that buzzed. Returned that 970 for another and got one that doesn't. Good cards are out there, just luck of the draw.

RMA is definitely an option if the burn in doesn't help.

Yea,, the burn in didnt help, EVGA told me to get a refund for it and apply for RMA so that they can collect it at their cost and do further testing on it.
My friend who has a GTX970 has also said that this happens.
Totally different build with the same noise..
Anyone else mind trying the 3DMark demo and testing the Ice Storm test if they have a GTX960/970?

The 970 was my first EVGA card, and I'm not really impressed with the quality. From the buzzing sound to the horrible sounding fans, I may not go with EVGA in the future but I understand that it's not just their 970s that have coil whine.

My 960 was by MSI and it didn't make a peep. Sucks the ball has been dropped by EVGA and really the other card manufacturers when it comes to the 970.

I heard all the brands have coil whine on their 970's and I think it's just going to be normal on performance electronics until someone figures out a cheap way to fix/prevent it. It's always been an issue with other high end electronic components but now we're starting to see it in our personal computers. However, I'm confident they will find a solution soon.

Re: Weird noise from my new GTX 960 2015/03/30 13:25:33 (permalink)
did a little experimenting with some information found on the internet.
I used the evga precision x to limit the fps to 120,
and voila! no coil sound.... What I found/think is that the 'Ice storm' test in the 3D mark is as low performance machine test which allows the test to run something up to 1500fps.
You can hear it from 600+ fps
The sounds start getting really bad around 1200fps.
I wondering if I should just keep my replacement card that I got, or get a refund for it and go for a gigabyte gtx960...

Could you be kind enough to try the ice storm benchmark on the 3dmark on your PC and see if the coil whine is there??

Got a refund for the EVGA GTX 960, waiting on a GIGABYTE GTX 960 G1 Gaming 4GB.
Will test that and post how it goes.

Problem still persists even with a gigabyte 960
