I was on a older bios and was able to get to 4.2 and it was stable as a rock, now with the newest "77" bios I am only able to get it to boot @ 3.8Ghz, if I even try to go any higher it will not even boot. 3.8Ghz is stable but I want more again.

my system is:

Mother Board ( EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI )
Bios ( 77 )      Wish I knew what the last one was I would just flash back
CPU (i7- 920 ) | Stepping (D0)
CPU Cooler ( Corsair H-50 Push/Pull )  when I ran 4.2Ghz before load temps in the mid 60s
Memory ( Corsair 6GB DDR3 1600  )
PSU ( Corsair TX750W )
GPU ( 2x5850s )
OS ( Windows 7 64 Pro)

I took pictures of all my old setting, can post pix needed, and I went into the bios to setup the bios just like it was before because I had it perfect. I see there is a few new things in the BIOS, wondering if anything needs to be changed in my settings.

Anyone else with this board and the newest bios that can help?

Thanks
Nick

PS: have done lots of searching, these are the guides I used over a year ago to get to 4.2Ghz

You would not be the first one to flash back to a older BIOS, or to stick to a older BIOS to keep a old OC. It is always advisable to compleatley re-do your OC, when you change BIOS versions.( some of the older BIOSes uses a VTT base of 1.1 insted if 1.2, if you add your +VTT the same as what you had before, you may be actualy ading too much.)

Ok but I can not even get it to POST. I have to reset to CMOS if I try to push it over 3.8Ghz

I guess I will flash to an elder BIOS and start over. Just wish I knew which one I used to run, but I can get an idea of a good one from other member.

looks like the 2Z2S is a good one, any other BIoS suggestions?

... Just wish I knew which one I used to run, ...

If this was the first time you have ever flashed your bios, and you were running what the board came with, you can tell what BIOS you had, by looking at the sticker on the clam shell. ( warning it's small and hard to see. ) also if you were a earley board adopter, the first Originaaal BIOS will not be listed under support, as EVGA doesn't list the original BIOS for download,

That is fine. I know I did flash it once or twice before, I used to keep up on it but I left it alone because I didn't notice anything in the updated BIOS that meant anything to me.  Just wish I would have left it but I got a bug to update.

Also for future referance; see my sig, If you list your BIOS version in your sig, if you ever forget what version you have, all you have to do is post anything to find it, I did not want to replace the small sticker on the clam shell, or go to the trouble of puting one on the side of the case, I found a Sig input a simple soulution, and no one ever has to ask what versionI am running.

This is just a wild guess, but could the Turbo performance setting (or something close to that) which is meant for 6 core chips be a culprit here?  I think I remember reading that that setting causes problems for 4 core chips.  People were often confusing it with the turbo boost that ups the multiplier by 1.  I think it is enabled by default now.

I will check again but I think it was disable, i noted that as a new item when I did the flash and made sure to disable it, or at least I thought.

    I flashed to sz2z

and it works... back on 4.2Ghz and stable as a rock again. right around 62 with a IntelBurnTest and 52 after running 3dmark11

    Thanks guys.

He is a screen shot of my system @ 4.2Ghz... the Vreg is getting hot. you can see it is @ 74c right after IBT, idle it is high 60s, and during games it is low 70s.
I was wondering if you guys could recommend a few voltage settings that I could lower to try and get the Vreg to come down a few degrees.

    Here are my Voltage settings:
  • EVGA VDroop Control - Without VDroop
  • CPU VCore - 1.35V
  • CPU VTT - +300mV
  • CPU PLL - Auto
  • DIMM Voltage - 1.60V
  • DIMM DQ Vref - +0mV
  • QPI PLL VCore - 1.350V
  • IOH VCore - 1.350V
  • IOH/ICH I/O Voltage 1.600V
  • ICH VCore - 1.200V
  • PWM Frequency - 1067 KHz

    Thanks again
    Nick

I think the Vreg is in safe territory, but I got a small spot cool fan and set it up to blow on the Vreg and it really helped with temps.  Here is a link for the product I got.  Many sites (amazon, newegg, etc.) sell this item and it is cheap.

    http://store.antec.com/Product/cooling-cooling_fan/spot-cool/0-761345-75018-9.aspx

EDIT: I just noticed you have your PWM Frequency at 1067.  I think that will generate more heat.  I also have the E758, but I have kept my PWM at 800.  Of course my OC is more modest than yours.  So, maybe the higher frequency is necessary in your case.

Thanks... Ya I put two 40mm 4k RPM fans on my Vreg.

I guess I will just not worry about it then.

Or even thinking about reseating the Vreg cooler, I read that helps

Ya that BIOS rocks, it is solid and have even been able to lower my voltages from my last post and get the Vreg to go down to 72*c on load and still be stable enough to run any load test without failure.

I agree with this "Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable. "   ;)

I did enough search around and found that that BIOS seemed to be solid for people running my CPU and clocks, so I ran with it and it has worked out great.
