Yea I thought it was the motherboard having trouble with 8gb but after about a month of fighting with the 790i ultra I finally realized it was the software that came with my Linksys network card which was causing my instability and stuttering. Removed that from my system and I've been running 8gb OC'd by 100MHz and the timings tightened a bit.

Stock my memory runs @ 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 1.5v

This is what I've got to before it hits its limits:

G.Skill 8GB 4x2GB Linked/Synced @ 1700 MHz 9-8-8-20 1.65v
1T (Works with 1T or 2T so I'm not touching it)
Other memory settings are set to Auto
tRFC: 74

Anybody wants pics or proof lol? I'm just suggesting you guys that can't get the system stable with 8GB look into your software since it might not be a hardware issue.

Doesn't want to run all 4 sticks at 1600MHZ (stock) without some timing tweaks. Runs beautiful at my sig. settings.

what is your thoughts on this.. I want to run 8 gig and at the max speed possible for the availability of memory I can get.  The problem I'm finding is all the stick I can find from EVGA's list is in the 1g per stick size.since I have this board (790i) and I want to overclock a Q9550  (stock 2.8ghz) to 3.6ghz or 3.8ghz shouldn't I be looking for memory at or above 1600??  AND at or higher than 1.7v?  I'm watercooling and I have alot of room for overclocking and keeping temps good.

I saw you run those babys at 1800 but they are rated for 1600, no issues?? I really want to run 8g's of ram.. I'm going to be doing alot of HD video compiling which I would think it would help.

Re:Wanna run 4x2GB on nForce board? 2010/10/07 16:04:37 (permalink)
So im looking to get new or more memory. Im currently running on only 2 GB of ram, kind of lame.  Im running a 780i vanilla SLi MB.
Id love to do 8GB but have not tried running 4 sticks yet. I did run 4 but they were a miss matched pair(2 1 GB and 2 GB sticks of Dominator) and yes I know it didn't end up working out in the end possibly causes instability that Im not having right now.

What is some good memory to look for?  Ive loved my Dominator but do want something reliable if running 8GB(if possible)

The most important piece of info out of your article was to enable P1 and P2. was having serious instability issues and bad memory type errors prior to enabling those settings now everything is running smoothly. thx for the help

I wonder if your configuration (4x2GB on a 750iMB) would work on my 790i board. I really don't want to recreate the wheel, just wanna roll with it.

I almost bought Crucial (Part Number: BL2KIT25664BA1339, Module Size: 4GB kit (2GBx2), Package: Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, Feature: DDR3 PC3-10600, Specs: DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 64) sticks. I mean, they're under $60 how can you pass that up.... but does anyone know if this would work?

Also, I noticed that nVidia's Spec sheet for nForce DDR3 Compatible Modules are: Aeneon (AXH760UD20-16H-K-2G), Kingston (KHX1300D3K2/2GN), and Corsair (TW3X2G1600C7DHXNV), which are all 2GB Kits at DDR3-1600, and are supported up to 4 modules. Wouldn't that be the 8GB max RAM we're all looking for?

if you can go for 4 gig sticks.I talked with Mushkin and they hooked me up with a set of cas 7 that seem to like my 790 I Ultra better then my 4 stick 8 gig solution before, not to mention less stress on the controller and less Voltage (1.95 down to 1.65!! )

WHOA! are you saying that you have 2x4GB for total of 8GB RAM in your 790i Ultra Mobo? Not 4x2GB?

What are the sticks you bought from Mushkin (M/N, P/N, etc).

i would talk to them if your mobo is anything other then the 790I Ultra to make sure,i worked with Mushkin Sean and Mushkin Tyler ,both were outstanding with my RMA and with choosing new ram for my mobo,AND advanced Bios settings.Cant say enough how happy i am with Mushkin customer service .

Re:Wanna run 4x2GB on nForce board? 2011/06/04 22:34:47 (permalink)
^interesting!

For some time I was running 2x2GB Patriot Viper sticks with 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix stick (both rated up to 2000MHz with similar CAS9 timings) and actually I was only able to run 3.4GHz on my Q9450 with 4 sticks and 3 video cards ... that is stable 1700MHz.

After long tweaking recently I made it stable (not fully under IBT) at 1800MHz after I loosened mem timings to CAS9 (was trying to make them run CAS8 as either of pairs was able to do it alone).

anyways, long story short, I maxed out SPP (North Bridge) haha in process. How I know that? because when burning 3.6GHz / 1800MHz OC on CPU with 20 rounds of Intel Burn test (max stress mode) I was able to see ARTIFCACTS on screen (GPU's were not even overclocked) LOL! that was the memory controller (and SLI video controller, same chip) not giving enough juice LOL!

As mentioned long time ago in other post, 790's weakest point is the North Bridge limiting the stability of clocks, not enough juice...

I am selling on ebay my 2x1 Crucial sticks and 3rd video card (used as dedicated PhysX) GTX 260. went back to less strain on board, using only 2 sticks and 2 video cards at 3.6GHz and no trouble.

however those 4GB sticks makes me wonder ... and maybe give it a shot since I will be keeping this board + CPU for some time (only planning to upgrade vid card to 570 in close future and get rid off hot running 275's) ...

hey bio,

is this RAM for nvidia (EPP) or intel chipset (XMP) ?
are you using those sticks? what clocks and timings? I am looking slowly for 2x4GB ram kit able to run 1800MHz with decent timings.

found also this Patriot Viper II 2000MHz 2x4GB kit, just worried that it's designed for XMP (this one was designed for P55 chipset) and had bad experience from past with such Patriot sticks ...

im running at factory specs actually
7/9/8/24 T1 (if you want the advanced just ask )
1.65 Volts
Note i was told by Mushkin Sean to run P1 and P2 on AUTO not enabled with this set (i was surprised)
As for EEP or  XMP i haven't noticed(or know where to look for sure) lol ,couldn't hurt to call support asking for a 1800 set that would work on the 790I Ultra ,that's what i basically did when i called about my RMA .

nice! kinda weird timings (7-9-8), but hell if it can run CR1 instead of usual CR2 than it might even compensate for automatic P1&P2

so you running them at 1600 stock? I might either get those and try OC'ing to 1800 or get 2000MHz (more expensive) and run at lower speed and tightened timings...

yes stock ,link and sync P1/P2 Auto .I've read these OC like hell but no real need TBH as faster then the FSB is bad anyways.Have not had one issue in almost a week with new sticks verses 3-6 hard-locks randomly with the 996601 4x2 .But Mushkin did say that particular model  # was now known to have issues. Also Mushkin Sean on the phone was awesome, guy is funny and was a great help setting advanced settings values. I'll post those in a few minuets ,i need to write them down now anyways,he had me start two of them with options to test lower and im at his suggested lowest possible values.BrB :)

here ya go (i would hope by now you know the order anyways lol)
7/9/8/24 T1 P1/P2 Auto
6
36 (suggested testing 32-40 ,36 was stable saw no real benefit trying to pushing it lower,i could push down but why bother )
10
27
32
7.8us
120 (suggested testing 120-130 120 runs fine)
My old 996601 set was running at
8/8/8/24 T1 P1/P2 (whatever not auto is lol i forgot)
6
32
10
27
32
7.8us
88

As you see the only real difference is my TRFC going from 88 to 120 ,but the memory voltage and less mem controller strain.
Im quite happy

^ thanks, writing this down. I *may* be getting same memory sticks in a few weeks   if they were onyl able tun 1800MHz stable ...

I want more RAM, 4GB feels tiny after I was running 6GB (Patriot+Crucial mixture) for a year! hehe

Just on a side note, my system runs 24/7 and in 2 years and never hard locked at confirmed stable settings, even when I was running mixed RAM sticks

I like 2x2GB Patriot Viper sticks, will miss them actually, very decent product... but I like Mushkin more! even though did not have luck in past with same sticks as your old ones (hard locks, but I don't blame Mushkin, perhaps my board didn't like those) I will try some 2x4GB kit.

the kit I linked above was not compatible (1.5V is specific to intel chipsets only).
However I found this 2000MHz sticks (2 versions, only heat spreaders are different):

a) Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model 996990
Cas Latency: 9
Voltage: 1.65V
Multi-channel Kit: Dual Channel Kit
Recommend Use: High Performance or Gaming Memory
Timing: 9-11-9-27
Heat Spreader: Frostbyte Heatsink

b) Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model 996991
Cas Latency: 9
Voltage: 1.65V
Multi-channel Kit: Dual Channel Kit
Recommend Use: High Performance or Gaming Memory
Timing: 9-11-9-27
Heat Spreader: Ridgeback Heatsink

I have just bought Mushkin 996990 8GB kit (the other one is out of stock) at $110 shipped from newegg, they have 15% off all desktop memory for 3 days (coupon code BTEKDKD32 ).
http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820226189

Sean from Mushin says this memory should run flawlessly on 790 Ultra with same primary timings as in specs (up to 2000MHz). Also he said this memory is good for P67/Z68 with only exception of frequencies which are a tad different on those platforms and have to be either 1866MHz (below specs) or 2133MHz (overclocked) which is not a big deal I guess That's in case I upgrade mobo+chip in a year or so

will let know how those sticks work for me once I get them.

perfect!

Installed 8GB kit of mentioned Mushkin Enhanced Blackline (rated 2000MHz, but running 1800MHz now) with timings 9-11-9-27 @ 1.65V and it runs great!

Just passed 10 rounds of Intel Burn Test 2.51 in max stress mode with no hiccups (only my CPu temps were a problem LOL!):

wondering how much I could tighten the timings at 1800MHz to squeeze the max juice out of those sticks ...
