Hello all. I have been getting this annoying bluescreen for a while now.. but my computer will freeze in incraments first before finally bluescreened.   End ruslt is memory dumps. I cant keep track off how many now. But, I checked the RAM, using software (windows and memtest) and says all good there. Checked hard drive.. all good there. All drivers updated. The GPU isn't that old.. (GTX560SC). the newest piece I have in this rig.  I can still play games or do whatever.. but not for long.   So I'm thinking.. could it be the old mobo? Or the old PSU? Or both?!  I planned on building another (UPDATED) rig.. but that's going to be a couple month process.  So in the meantime.. is there a way to check the mobo with software for failures or whatever? But its running fine right now.. hasn't frozen since I logged on here. If it is the GPU.. Could I stick it in the second pci express slot to see if that'll work?  I have the EVGA 680i SLI. Yes.. old.. but please help.. I need it to last a couple more months at least. Thanks!

You can use BlueScreenViewer to see the information in the dmp files rather than have to install the Debug tools from Microsoft. This is what I use:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

After you get the BCC(Bug Check code) use this chart to find more information:

I did that before.. maybe or maybe not correctly.. but it had me make an iso disc?  Sound weird? I'll try it again :)

I downloaded the 64-bit zip file. After I extracted the contents I open the folder and double-click the BlueScreenView app and run it from there. I don't install it to my system drive.

ok so I was wrong.. :) Got my programs mixed up. Anyways.. I ran it.. and nothing showed up at all. Where do I find the info about the dumps?   I did take a couple pics before on a couple of them.. looks sorta like this:   \windows\minidump\081713-15600-01.dmp

and another looks like so:  \windows\minidump\082313-19656-01.dmp

I'm not sure what to look for here to seek out the problem on the chart.   The only diff in the blue screens are these numbers..

Open BlueScreenView then click the 'Options' tab at the top. From the drop-down menu select 'Advanced Options'. Then browse to C:\Windows\LiveKernalReports\WATCHDOG. That is where my .dmp files are found.

I did that.. unfortunately it's empty. I guess I'll have to wait until it does it again.  It usually does it when I'm playing a game.. but like I said earlier, its been fine. I'm sure I'll wake up to see it restarting forever. I need to check my cleaning programs and make sure NOT to delete such reports. Thanks so much for your help.. But I need to get some sleep.. worked all night and have  to get back up in 5 hours :(  I'll keep you posted. Probably not today, but in the morning tomorrow. :)

If they are not in C:\Windows\MiniDump or C:\Windows\LiveKernalReports\WATCHDOG then they may have been deleted if you cleaned the error reports from Action Center. IDK if Windows 8 has an Action Center since I am staying with Windows 7 for now.

  look like  a video issue?

This is a common error called a TDR error. In the bottom pane of BlueScreenView it will normally show a 'faulting' module that probably caused the BCC. I used to get a lot of TDR erors in BF3 but the faulting module was always an 'Anti-piracy' protection software that EA/DICE uses. After DICE fixed that I haven't had any more issues. Do you monitor your GPU temps or have a custom fan profile in PrecisionX or Afterburner? When a video board gets too hot it will 'throttle back' the core clock to protect itself from damage. This can cause the stuttering you see before the BSOD also.

I used to use one.. but I ended up letting window take care of that. I do have the GPU-Z. And when I looked at it earlier (after playing  a game for a few minutes.. it was at 60c. But fan speed was only at 34%. Thought that was kind of low.  Sorry for the late response.. I was submitting a ticket, incase the card is bad now. I do need a program then to use in the meantime.. to see if that'll help.. have any links?

You can use either PrecisionX or MSI Afterburner but don't run GPU-Z at the same time to prevent conflicts between monitoring programs. My personal preference is MSI Afterburner version 2.2.4 because it has the slower on-screen monitoring for FPS(Frames-per-second) and allows me to capture Screenshots or record streaming video with audio. Whichever you decide open 'Options' or 'Settings' and place a check mark in the Custom Fan profile box. Create a cusom profile to have your fans reach max speed around 60-65 degrees. This is my fan profile:

OK Thank you soooo much!  I'll give it a whirl!  When you responded and said what it was doing.. I was floored! (about the sputtering before the bsod)  that's exactly what it was doing. Hopefully the card isn't damaged. I'll install the MSI Afterburner then get to bed! I'll keep ya posted on the status of this. You've been a tremendous help! Hopefully you'll get a notification when I leave another reply :)

So I decided to try out the MSI Afterburner. I launched my game and it went smoothly. I closed the game then closed The afterburner. Almost immediately my computer froze up. As my GPU temps were still at around 64c. So now I just have to tinker with the settings and keep it running while I play games. I used to have the presicion x.. But got rid of it. It looks as tho I have to have afterburner on during gameplay. I'll give it another spin in the morning after I get home from work. Is there a way to adjust the setting by 5's instead of 10's? Thanks again!

I have my Afterburner set to 'Start with Windows' and 'Apply overclocking at system start-up'. I always have it minimized in the Taskbar and then click on the icon to read the data after a game. You can adjust your fan curve any way you want it by left-clicking on one of the white squares in the graph line and dragging it to wherever you want it. If you double-click in the graph area it will change it to a block type step-up instead of a curved line.

Keep Afterburner running  at all times. No reason to close it out, I am pretty sure it doesn't take up much if any resources. Let it run, make it start with windows, everything.

I will keep it running from now on. Hopefully this will fix my issue. I don't have my card over clocked. Linda scared to.. Don't want to bottleneck with my old CPU. Since I cannot oc that. If I can get away with oc'ing the GPU, where should I set it at? Using GTX 560 and CPU is Q9500. I noticed the setting on the afterburner are set and half way.

The sliders in Afterburner are usually in the middle of their range for your video board. My video boards are different in that your Afterburner panel should also show a 'Shader Clock' and mine does not. Your Shader Clock is normally twice the speed of your Core Clock and I think it will increase automatically as you increase your Core Clock. There should be a box to check to keep them 'linked' or 'synced' or something. You can start by increasing your Core Clock by +10-15 MHz, click apply, and then test using a benchmark like Unigine Heaven. Rememeber to keep an eye on your temps. You can keep increasing by +10 to +15 until the video crashes and then back it down by 15 MHz and everything should be good.

Either way if your GPU is freaking out at 60c I would get it replaced. That's not really all that hot.... If int he end you determine the GPU is the issue.

Yea ill try that also. I think the GPU was freaking around 60-70 cuz the fan speed wasn't going up.. It was staying around 30-34%. I already submitted a ticket with evga. I'll give it a go soon, should say when I'm not at work :) Thanks guys, ill keep ya updated.

Another update. I started playing a game, and my card rose to 60+ fairly quick.. It briefly stuttered, the fan speed was a bit low. Cranked the speed up to 70-75% and it was fine. Never went past 65c. Is this normal for this card? For having fan speed that high to maintain 60-65c? If not, let me know and perhaps RMA it. Don't want it to burn out before its time. Admin, what does that mean? Lol (BR given by request) Off to bed, I'll check back later.

You can try a more aggressive fan profile to ramp up the speed at a lower temp. It might be a good idea to clean the dust from the video board also especially if it has been in use for any amount of time. You will need a can of compressed air, a small phillips screwdriver(#0, I think) and a soft brush to help dislodge heavy deposits of dust from between the fins of the heatsink. Remove the video board and then the small screws that hold the two shroud halves together. These screws run along the narrow edge all the way around. If the front half doesn't easily come off then you missed one somewhere. Use the brush to remove most of the dust accumulation and then the compressed air to get rid of the rest of it. Probably best to do this outside or in the hallway in front of your neighbor's apartment. LOL, just kidding! Outside is probably best though. Remember to clean the fan blades especially if it is a 'blower' style fan. Your temps should drop considerably after cleaning. Post back and let us know the results. Be careful not to lose any of the small shroud screws. You can get something called an 'Acid brush' from an auto supply store or any Auto-Zone or you can use an old soft toothbrush. I buy a 3-pack of generic junk toothbrushes at my local grocery store for $2.99. Walmart has compressed air and is where I get mine because they have the best price.

I do clean my PC periodically with a data vac, but never took out components to do that. I prefer the data vac over compressed air for a few reasons. Last time it was totally disassembled was in earlier this year. Looks like I'll have to get one of those fancy screwdrivers then. So taking the shroud off won't void my warranty or anything? As far as the profile goes.. I'm still trying to figure out how to make that "curve" kind you speak of lol. I right click on the boxes and does nothing. As it sits, my card is idling at 32c. I remember when I first I stalled the card, it was already at 52c. I was like ****?! Lol. Maybe it's a very warm hearted card.

Removing the shroud won't void your warranty. I worried about it too until I got my second 570 for SLI. I decided to clean the dust just so both boards would be 'fresh' when I installed them. Their was a ton of junk packed into the fins of my original 570 after just 6 months of usage. A data vac won't get in there to remove it. You at least need a blast of compressed air. To adjust the fan curve, left-click on a box and hold the LMB down as you drag it to where you want it. The box will turn a brighter white if you are in the right spot.

Ok, looks like I have some work to do tomorrow evening. But guess what?! It never fails! As I was leaving for work, I look to see if my monitors were off and lone behold.. Computer was restarting.. Trying to boot back up with no success. That usually happens after a crash for me. I had to manually shut it down and left it until I can get back to it. How much you want to bet it's another 117 bug code. I'm sooo tired if dealing with issues on this thing lol.
