Does it matter if I use the middle slot so I can get access to the PCIe slot?

There are several boards in the X58 SLI family, which one do  you have  757,758,759,760,762,770,... PCIe configuration verries board to board.   Also what GPU are you using, Many of the 200 series cards do not use over what a 8X slot can provide anyway. and on the 400/500 cards the diferance from 16X to 8X is about 2%

Apparently the 758 and I moved the 5870 to the middle slot and got access to the PCIe slot. Thanks.

Glad you got it, 758 PCIe lanes are as follows. middle slot will be 16X as long as bottom slot is unoccupied, 1X slot will not affect bandwidth.

Thank you for the info, I had the same question.  One additional item...does a card actually need to be in Slot 1? (Closest to the cpu).  I just ordered the 590 GTX and it is 3/8" too long for my slot 1 but will fit in slot 2 just fine.  Thanks in advance.

On the X58/P55 platform you can boot off any PCIe slot, unlike the older 775 socket boards where you had to run a card in the primary slot.

Thank you sir!  Looking forward to not having to use a dremel tool on my hard drive cage
